Part of The Shear Zone Channel. Follow along with Rob has he demonstrates an exercise in structural geology, mapping out normal faults to create a "fault loss map" that shows how different faults can interact. These types of maps are fundament for interpreting fault patterns in the subsurface in sedimentary basins using 3D seismic images. But here we use an active tectonic landscape - in Djibouti, comparing the result with fault patterns found in sedimentary basins. The exercise is laid out in: Butler (2023) "Training the creation, visualisation and interpretation of fault maps for the subsurface - using tectonic geomorphology", in: Geological mapping - of our world and others. Another wonderful insight into ingenious field-mapping techniques. Tremendously informative and enjoyably engaging.

Thanks a lot. Your video has motivated me to keep rolling in the interpretation of the thrust- and- fold system in the East-Siberian Sea that I was able to trace from the sea to a land.

just like in thrust faults, and perhaps in strike slip fault systems too, the way the faults initiate as short segments, merge into each other as they grow and finally making one master fault and many many faults sorrounding them on both sides.. So inspiring to watch the similar concepts in normal fault system too....😍 looking forward to the continuation of this talk as mentioned in the end 😇

Describe how fault linkage in map view might be aliased, in terms of seismic line position and spacing, and the Exploration and Production implications of fault trend aliasing

Indeed this is an issue - but there are fundament issues about how faults (especially small ones) are mapped in 3D seismic volumes and very very few workflows documented by interpreters... more to follow on this later in the year, as we publish...

The Djibouti half graben to the west of Red Sea-Aden ridge is a great example with so excerllent image. Can the Relay Ramp region be taken as somewhat like the transform region with the strike slipping kinematics?

Relay ramp geometries can occur wherever fault segments overlap (soft-link) in map view ... so also for thrusts and strike-slip.

@@robbutler2095 The sinuous region of the normal fault, may be a region of strike-slip like zone, reflecting the changable of paleostress field regime.

@@hongyuanZhang-pr6wt I don't think so.... sinuous fault patterns are quite common (also in thrust systems) - why change the stress regime (in patches), rather than have sinuous forms by linking originally discontinuous segments... The fault system at Djibouti is VERY young....

See the videos in the Seismic Interpretation playlist. There are discussions on fault geometries and their imaging/interpretation.
