+Joe Seijo It's the camouflage that BMW (and most other car manufacturers) put on their test mules (cars during testing and development) in order to hide the final product from rivals and the public until the official reveal. It's common practice. The swirl black and white paint job does a very good job in tricking the eyes in depth and on the true lines of the car. Feel free to google image "test mule cars" - every manufacturer does this to hide products as it takes ~ 3-5 yrs to develop a new car and they do not want copy caters, stolen designs, or rivals beating them to the punch.

+Philip Trinh I think on race cars it is more just a "cool thing" to do and has started happening only more recently, an alternative to the usual black carbon test colors. Race cars aren't test driving on public roads and most often the very first pics of race cars are published or "leaked" by the manufacturer itself, and in high-resolution pics the livery does little to hide the shapes unlike in the often blurry pics from public roads. In tightly controlled GT3 racing I'm not sure the competitors are even that interested in the aerodynamic shape of another car, since the road legal model is already known and the basic shapes can't be applied to their own cars and even by the time they have time to copy something, they've already seen the car in real life at the race tracks. ps. Trivia: idea originates from World War I era ships.
