With Jaws (1975), Steven Spielberg and his cast & crew practically invented the summer blockbuster. Making $100 million in just 38 days Jaws redefined mainstream cinema forever. Monumental movie success inevitably brings sequels.
Jaws 2 (1978) became the most successful sequel ever at the time so a third Jaws adventure was even more likely. 5 years later, Jaws 3D was unleashed. Taking a fresh approach to the story and embracing the latest movie making technologies, this installment attempted to rest the franchise on the shoulders of Chief Body’s sons, Michael (Dennis Quaid) and Sean (Jon Putch).
Savaged by critics and audiences, (3.7 on IMDB), the promising premise and lure of the biggest shark in the franchise (35 feet long), Jaws 3D was far from “the third dimension in terror” many had hoped for.
In later interviews, screenwriter Richard Matheson claimed that the film was bedeviled by script doctors who ruined the central premise of a Great White shark swimming upstream and becoming trapped in a lake.

Great video. Remember watching this programme on itv uk back in oct/nov 1983. Noticed the close up parts at 36:13 & 47:05 didn’t appear in the 3D cinema version.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, everytime I come to your page I think I've seen everything, and wonder how I missed this. I hope you have and are having great success for covering everything JAWS. Love it. I remeber seeing the ABC Special which was a shark doc intertwined with some BTS of Jaws 3. But I don't remember these parts, especilly seeing Bruce with the Dolophins. We had so much fun as teens going to see this in the theatre, we wanted to stay and watch it twice. But some of us had to get home before street lights came on. So glad they released in on 3D Bluray. I just wish they would get around to releaseing the original version of the converted 3D. That was such a treat to see. I want it bad for my 3D Collection. I don't understand why it hasn't been released. All that work just for a week or two run. Think of the extra money they could make selling to the supposed dead 3D Movie fans. - Toronto, Canada.

I was toying with a story idea to reboot the Jaws franchise, and this movie provided the most inspiration. First off, it's not a great white. It resembles 1, but it's a divergent species, called the Grizzly shark. The Grizzly shark has extra muscles surrounding its jaws, it can use these muscles to pump water through its gills while stationary, but it can reverse the stream, making it capable of swimming backwards. And like the Oscar fish, it can open it's mouth so wide and quickly, to create a water vacuum, allowing it to swallow dolphins and divers whole,, and alive. It does this as part of its hunting strategy, as it can take in orcas, and eat their livers (remember the dead orca in Jaws 2?) Instead of a corrupt mayor or corporation owner the 2nd antagonist is a member of the EPA, dead set to take credit for making this discovery. Patricia Hooper (grand daughter of Matt Hooper.) The stage is set for a clash with a new unpredictable apex predator, and a glory centric unaccountable government worker.

I don’t think they took legal action because of the similarities, (because Spielberg had stopped them doing the exact same thing for Joe Dante’s Piranha) I think they did it because Great White (in its limited run) made so much money that it would have been a runaway success had it remained open for audiences. With Universal gearing up for Jaws 3 at the time, they didn’t want anyone else stealing the thunder.

Two instances are the people on the deck trying to catch the shark and the shark towing the deck out to sea, and the shark hunter being tangled up in a rope and drowned.. came directly from the book. The fact that Vic Morton, as the shark hunter, bore a slight resemblance to Robert Shaw as Quint didn’t help.

@@jaynefeeney Oh it’s totally Italian Jaws, there’s no denying that it’s practically a remake with scenes from Jaws 2 shoved into it. The sly and not very subtle nods to the novel, with the main character being called Peter -Benchley- Benton do not help matters 🤣 But, I just think Universal might not have cared so much if it hadn’t made so much money in its opening.

I remember Joe Alves stating that the dolphins got sick when placed into the fresh water tank with the shark. This is classic to see the way films were made before all of the rights activists got involved in film. You will never see this film made today.

Yes you would, they would however CGI the shark rather than spending millions on making shark animatronics....But in 2021 we have the technology to have CGI sharks.

And this is a good thing people start to think about what they are doing with animals and what not to do, which avoids making them uncomfortable or unsafe. I'm proud to have come from going to the French SeaWorld with my mom to act against it. It's the proof that people can educate themselves even if they had completely different stuff taught before.

They didn't show how they shot the scene of Fitzroyce being devoured inside the shark's jaws . To me thats the only convincing well-done scene in the whole movie.

Well they certainly got the numbers right in order of ranking for these movies. To be honest I actually liked Jaws 3D when I saw it aged 12/13 at the cinema. It was 3D and was pretty good at the time, when this was released in UK. Unfortunately technology could not do this movie no justice, when later released on vhs rental. So you could never appreciate the 3D aspect to the movie, making it look just awful. I am not going to slate this movie. The next one 'Jaws The Revenge' well there is a borefest for you.

Oh I don't know. I think I prefer Revenge over 3D. Revenge kinda works if you think of there being two sharks in the movie, rather than one following the family to the Bahamas. Or, maybe the sharks vacation coincided with the Brody's. 😃

All these wild animals need to be free & not Put up at night in tiny concrete pools omg I Would never go to sea world or other sea life Parks, it's cruel & wrong hasn't anyone Watched blackfish how many orca trainers have to die before there head clears & these Places are banned permanently just look at Shamu the orcas fin flopped over like that, I think the trainers should be made to sleep in the tiny concrete pool then they'd know how an orca feels, that's the downside to this film, wild animals should all remain Free, i did notice the female bruce was a lot bigger than the original Bruce & also how did it get, into the filtration tunnel pump who put her in there in the first place? Calvin was stupid trying to suffocate Bruce when Michael hadn't even finished the repairs on the tunnels omg impatient or what & he was stupid to move Jaws baby wtf he should of gotten eaten by Jaws & not his brother, he's irresponsible definitely has anyone else noticed the film goes silent.
