Making of Our Blue Bonnets

Watch and learn how our volunteers create our handcrafted traditional blue bonnets. These bonnets were the customary headwear for Scotsmen for hundreds of years, and are now popular with re-enactment groups and TV companies. We supply a detachable white cockade with each bonnet, as Bannockburn House is a Jacobite house and the white cockade is a symbol of support for Bonnie Prince Charlie who was garrisoned at the house. Very beautiful work! I’d love to someday purchase one of your bonnets. I’m from the USA, and would have to ship it here. I’m impressed by the time invested into each bonnet, as well as the quality of work of the finished product. I had no idea how large they actually were before being felted 😂

Once, for fun, I carved bone pins out of a cow thigh bone. Most of the shaping was done by filing, and had to be done wet, to prevent serious lung issues. It took a long time, and they came out curved. That was actually more comfortable in my hands.
