Remember riding my bicycle to the VHS shop every Friday. Rented mostly kids' movies, but it became my happy place when I grew older, too. There was just something about holding a tape in your hands with the excitement that comes with a whole new adventure that got me so hyped up. Online shows have never lived up to that physical embodiment of excitement.

Agreed. I too have been riding myself to the library, not only being the only thing close to a video rental store, but also through the influence of both this movie and The Neverending Story, that shows how amazing a library can be. Whether for reading or such. There's a kind of magic found in a library that can't be found in online stuff like Netflix or such.

That happens to me when I was living at the Equestrian Apartments in Henderson all by myself. I rode my bike to McDonald's, or Taco Bell, or Smith's, or In n' Out Burger, or the movie store. That was the best time I ever had.

Today, November 23rd, 2024 is the 30th Anniversary of The Pagemaster, rewatching it as an adult brought back so many memories of the movie when I was younger. I always wanted that bright yellow bike of Richard's, and rumor has it that the prop warehouse at Universal Studios still has it. Also, James Horner did the amazing soundtrack for it, Horner basically scored my childhood.

@@GreenFiend35yes i agree 😃 On reflection this type of story is a classic, & pops up throughout history, i think we are due another! Been a while. Oldest i can think of is neverending story & labyrinth in the 80s, then this in 90s, & another 2 both in 2008 inkheart & bedtime stories. Don't recall any 2010-2024. If they redid this now/remastered, made it longer with more books to explore 😍

@Tornado1994
@Tornado1994 12 күн бұрын
@@melty05 Blame Fox's Timing and Sloppy promotion. The Pagemaster was supposed to be the First Animated Feature ready for 1994 set for Memorial Day Weekend. Its Main Competition was going to be Thumbelina. But for some reason, FOX pushed its release date WAY back even though Post Production finished in Early April '94(Mac had done all of his Voice Overs and Live Action Segments during the Spring of 1993 when he was still 12 years old). FOX also decided to pull back on marketing when its release date was PUSHED way back to November, they pulled out of the Summer Schedule TERRIFIED of Lion King. But NEVER counted on Disney deciding to Reiusse Lion King for the Holidays. This was a VERY shortsided decision on FOX's end. The Pagemaster Was READY to go for Memorial Day weekend in '94, and had decent premiere dates in September and October when Lion King was temporarily out of Theatrical Rotation, but Fox did NOT realize that Lion King would be brought back into Rotation in time for the Holidays. The Release date also marred promotion of The Pagemaster. Because by November, Macaulay Culkin was now FOURTEEN years old, his voice was already hitting puberty AND he was TOO busy promoting another film "Richie Rich" to be able to promote Pagemaster. Both Film's Underperformed at the Box Office in which contributed to Culkin's decision in late 1994 to retire as a Child Actor and no longer do anymore of the films. He was ready to grow up and be a normal NYC Teenager.

They did a wonderful job with that cgi, and I am very glad they did not eschew it in disfavor and loathing like so many today. They wanted to integrate animation to live action and did so wonderfully and beautifully. I always wondered how they even managed to capture that effect back in the old days. Christopher Loyd does a great job as the Pagemaster and Mr. Dewey. I am sad this movie did not receive the praise it deserved back in the day, partly due to child actor prejudice, seemingly bad marketing, and critics who thought it was a con job deceiving kids to enjoy the Art of Story through the medium of books. I dare say, that like the transition from live action, through cgi, to live animation, they missed the Magic of Imagination and Beauty of another World in which we Escape...That which is always called Story...

Because I believe that Disney had been acquired on 20th Century Studios, instead of licensing on Warner Bros. Discovery!!! And that was awesome!!! And even, all unreleased scenes, footage, alternate scenes and deleted scenes for this film from all trailers, home video releases, commerical and TV Spots, must be put them back together!!!

The voice cast was made of pure talent. And the animators obviously put their heart and soul into the drawings. But every project needs to start with a solid story inside a clever script. Without that foundation, it's all just empty noise.

This movie is what inspired my crazy jackass bravery when I saw it as a kid. Now 40 years old and I feel dried out and completely drained. What good memories from my childhood when I had the energy. I used to mimic the dragon sequence as Richard Tyler with my friends as the books climbing trees pretending I was riding up the growing vine from the dragon's mouth. Despite being a heavily masculine middle aged man, I'm sorry a little moist in the eyes. Thanks for the video post!

This is such a lovely comment, and I just want to say it's so nice seeing someone talk so joyfully about childhood play. I hope you still feel able to capture that - if not by playing out dramatic sequences, then maybe in storytelling, or cooperative storytelling like DnD, or artwork. We aren't limited by our bodies, we still got the same minds!

I find any good bit of literature to read and even as of this moment I'm trying to write a book for DC Comics and its purpose is to show the world that a simple human being has superpowers such as faith and love and Hope. A basic Superman who is Hope can give him the ability to fly. It is my great privilege to present despite still in writing it is my great privilege to present to everybody who is a fan of DC Comics I give to you the kamandi paradox as dedication to a Jack Kirby Classic and how much I would love to dedicate this not only to Christopher Reeve and Kevin Conroy but I would love to dedicate to a very special Elder in my family who is no longer in my family because she passed away I wish with the most sincere honesty to dedicate this to my grandmother. @@Valerio_the_wandering_sprite First Saw the Trailers for it Back in like Early Spring 1994. Then for some odd reason, its Release Date of May 27,1994 was completely Changed. Fox stopped running promotions for it during the summer, But resumed them once Lion King finished its Summer Theatrical Run. Fox did NOT expect Disney to bring Lion King back in during The Holiday Season. Pagemaster was released Thanksgiving, and landed with a hollow thud at the Box Office.

Betty Jean Ward voiced The Queen of Hearts. She's best known for her Voice work in G.I. Joe and The Snorks(As Casey Kelp and Lil Weed). She Temporarily retired from Voice Acting in 1995 to help her Widowed Daughter raise her own Grandchildren(Ward and her Daughter are VERY close to each other like Pat Musick and Mae Whitman and was pretty close to her late son-in-law) But Ward Returned to the Business in mid 2005.

At 7:14, Frank Welker is at his best voicing Horror! And the animation really nails the personalities of his wacky performance!
