Owning and possession seem so important. You can’t actually enjoy what is in a tub stacked in a garage. We Americans need to get out of the depression era of owning what our parents and grandparents lost or couldn’t have. Sharing with others who hopefully need.

This video was a real eye opener for me. As I watched you sorting all those stored items, I could only imagine how hard it would be for the adult children of a deceased parent to sort and dispose of things that were once deemed too valuable or too sentimental to part with. I hope that when I die, my daughters will not be cursing me for all the work I leave behind for them to do that should have been MY task throughout my lifetime.

@@plynn136 , I have been. I’ve always been a neat person by nature, and my home is usually company ready, but it’s amazing how much one can accumulate in storage after 48 years of marriage. I’ve already downsized ten full, tall bookcases of books to three bookcases, I’ve gone through all my clothing and ditched clothes I haven’t worn for awhile, and I’ve given away all my fine China, extra everyday kitchen plates and cups, tossed extra bedding, shoes, purses, etc. however, my biggest storage board is decor that I change out periodically-wall art, lamps, vases, statues, storage baskets, etc. it is a work in progress. I just finished repainting (by myself) my living room, dining room, kitchen, long hallway and one of three bedrooms. I still have two remaining bedrooms to go. I painted all the walls a soft ivory because I figured it would be a neutral palette when it came time to sell my home and move into assisted living. All the house mechanics and roof have been updated, and our outdoor landscaping has been kept simple so it won’t require a lot of upkeep.

Start clearing out now. I know that my husband will most likely end up clearing out his parents separate homes. They have enough junk to fill 4 houses, I'm not being rude, but a lot of what they owe is badly stored and is being damaged, it is of no use to anyone. My parents also have a lot of junk, I try to get them to clear it out, but they are reluctant. I know that I will be the one clearing out their house, my sister lives on another continent, she is not going to make the time to clean someone's else's mess.

Yup! Urban recycling at its best. A suggestion for those family heirlooms (tends to translate to stuff our relatives owned that we don't or won't use but struggle to let it go) Take a picture (or pictures) of it, write up a description of what it is and if its gone to a family member and keep all that info in a binder and relaease the stuff. And all those photo's? Scan them, be sure to ask family members if they want them, including extended family (I guess that all depends on your context) While clearing out my 100 yo MIL's house, I found photos of a childhood friend of hers and was able to return those photos to that family. They were thrilled since all their family photo's had be wiped out in a basement flood.

To anyone storing original photos (or books or documents) in attics, garages, or basements: if you plan on keeping the original material in its physical form after it's been scanned, please store it indoors! These spaces are the worst places to keep archival material like that because of the fluctuating temperatures and humidity levels. I work as a book and paper conservator and see damage done to documents, books, and photos all the time because they're stored in these types of spaces.

Your husband's mom has collected some beautiful things. Glad to see it organized for her. Looks like she uses her skills to sell things for extra income. Hope she is successful with that. Certainly looks like a lot of quality things. Some of those toy things were perhaps collected with grandchildren in mind. Hope she gets some. lol hint, hint. Some beanies still are valuable. Hope you sort before you give them all away. You all did an amazing job organizing that space in ONE day!!! That would be at least a three week project or more for most people. You obviously all work together well. Seems like she will need a heating system to take advantage of the space. Maybe a space heater will do until she can make an actual room. Love her basket collection and as a quilter, bet it wouldn't take long to use up a lot of that fabric if she quilts and sews. Vintage fabrics are very popular so she could sell the fabric itself on consignment at an antique shop or even advertise locally, I bet. I really like how you don’t shame the people you work with for what they are and aren’t ready to let go of. Sure you might say still won’t get rid of a lot stuff but it’s not in a negative light to make the person feel bad about their attachments and feelings. It can be really hard and sometimes we don’t know the story of why something is sentimental and it’s really important to push people into letting go but in a loving way and taking a break when the need one. I think you would really love a Hoarders heart. She speaks about how she became a hoarder and her struggles. As she slowly but successfully declutters her home. I am not saying this person is a hoarder I’m just stating her channel is a really good channel on the attachments we can have to items and why.
@prosie19682 жыл бұрын
I really struggle to get rid of stuff, I call myself hoarder lite. I ‘inherited’ two relatives homes which compounded the problem. I have been working thru it and my daughter just helped me do a clothes closet overhaul. We learned that we have to work together and I can get rid of more than I thought. It can really cause anxiety for me so I appreciate what your MIL deals with and I applaud both of your efforts, it’s so not easy.

I live the makeover series April! Over 20 years ago my husband and I bought our first home and my 89 year old grandmother moved in with us. She had lived in her house for 65 years and even though it was a small house I was shocked at what came out of it! We had 3 garage sales, after family came and took what they wanted, and the rest went to Goodwill. It took awhile to get through it in our two car garage, but I was determined we would be able to park in it. I mean what’s the point of having a garage if you can’t park you car in it! I think we were the only house in our neighborhood that actually parked our vehicles in our garage! After that experience I am determined not to leave a lot of stuff for my family to go through. Purging is so therapeutic 🙂.
@JamieM4702 жыл бұрын
I can totally relate. Our garage is for our cars, so they don't get weather-beaten, sun-bleached, or vandalized. Or hit with neighborhood kids' baseballs lol. I used to have a garage packed with stuff, but the negatives of that outweigh the positives so much that it started me on my decluttering path several years ago. You don't have to go outside to warm the car up & scrape off ice & snow in the winter. Never have to carry groceries through the rain, and if the cars need to be worked on, oil or air checked, vacuumed.....I can do it any time of day or night, in any weather. And the paint lasts longer! I love having my car inside. It makes life SO much easier. We don't have a basement, an attic, or even a backyard shed, so I've had to declutter really hard, & keep at it, but like you, I'm determined! We don't have a lot of money either, so I made a garage shelf from 2 old tv stands and an old door lol. Doesn't look great, but it works! I don't know why I used to trade all those positives for extra storage of anxiety-producing mountains of stuff. (Edit: I have to say though, the way this young lady organized that stuff into like-groups was awesome, and it will make decluttering so much easier on her mother-in-law. I wish someone had jump-started my decluttering like that!)

There is a book about it and I have watched several videos on KZbin. It isn't as morbid as it sounds.

Your mother-in-law is probably close to my age. I’m not sure what’s worse having help with an organization project or facing it on your own. There’s a lot to be said for de-cluttering in passes. Each time you go through it gets easier to let stuff go. For me it’s keeping the stuff gone that can be a challenge as well. Vintage fabric can be super tough as you aren’t going to find what you let go of by mistake. In my experience it is very hard to find especially in large pieces. My only advice to others for this and other craft items is to understand what you could possibly get done in your lifetime and that you are also going to want to try different things as well. So let go of those things you are realistically not have the time to use. You aren’t in going to live forever and someone is going to get stuck cleaning up. That’s even helped me weed my books!

@Jen39x2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the amount of stuff. Most American homes are overflowing. The garage is the first spot it heads for. We even rent garages to store stuff. It’s called self-storage and there’s literally whole buildings that are basically garages with garage doors for dumping stuff. They are really supposed to be for temporary storage like when I left one house and waited 6 weeks to finish paperwork for condo. Those 2 months I lived in a tiny apartment and my furniture (and way too much junk) lived in a self storage unit. I needed 2 garage size units. I have a problem. 😳😳😳 Unfortunately most people end up leaving stuff there until they get tired of paying the bill. If they are irresponsible they don’t clean the unit out and the junk they will never miss is sold at auction
@yvettep26082 жыл бұрын
Some people keep their cars in the garage but a lot of people keep them on the driveway outside the garage. The "stuff you keep in a garage" is often tools, home repair/diy things like paint, as well as seasonal items for the house and yard - like window air conditioners, lawn mower, snow shovels, gardening tools.
@yamimana99182 жыл бұрын
@@Jen39x We have self-storage but we don't call that garage, I guess. It's a somewhat new thing that we started doing and a growing industry. Anything you don't wanna keep in the house you keep in the cellar or an attic if you have it usually. Oh yeah, my dad loves watching that show where they sell the abandoned stuff in the storage units. It's badly dubbed over and I have no clue why he finds it so fascinating.

@@yvettep2608 My mother has kept her car in the garage longer than I've been alive. The car is too valuable to keep outside? Probably. But then everything you said you store in the garage we store in the cellar. Some people have a garden shed for garden stuff.

Here in Minnesota where it’s very cold you bet we keep our cars in our garage! But garages have gotten bigger and bigger over the years in many neighborhoods, as they’re also used for storing lots of items like tools, garden supplies, and of course plenty of random junk!

Another question to ask, “do you want to keep all of the sellable stuff or get central air?” ( and permanently sell four A/C units!) That would be my tipping point.😩😵💫😩😵💫. And I love most of her stuff!!!!!!!

Haha, well they want to but it is VERY expensive for their house so these makeovers were first for the budget 💛

What a tremendous job for one day! And I assume that your CEO was busy napping at home, on her back, with all four paws in the air!

Honestly, it was hard to watch this video. I was looking forward to half of that stuff being gone. But at least the stuff is organized. It actually looks great.

It must be so frustrating, you have such patience and understanding, on the video, to me, it just looks like a lot of stuff shuffling. What are all those baskets for?

I was able to sort 1800 photos in one evening. Here is a photo sorting box similar to the ones I used. LYNECO BLACK ARCHIVAL PHOTO STORAGE BOX. Make extra file dividers with photo safe scrap book paper. You can purchase photo safe envelopes) The idea is to try to touch each photo once. So dividers need to be marked in a way that suits your mother-in-law sorting style. Purchase as many boxes, divers(or make more) as needed to just get started. File label examples: each child, vacations, when we lived…address, town, old house, new house By date…etc. **I only used the plastic box system after I was done. She may like this system too but, remember, it’s not helpful to have a bunch of piles all over.

What is the differnce in items between what you sell on PoshMark and what you sell on ebay? Love this series and I can so relate to your Mother's collected items.
@SpaceMakerMethod2 жыл бұрын
Right now we just wanted to try a few items on Poshmark, but the heavier items will require a more expensive shipping so we'll have to use Ebay to calculate that cost as Poshmark doesn't cover that expense.

If your garage gets to freezing temperatures it may make your paint unusable. Fyi for everyone in really cold climates! Would be a shame to lose that amount of paint, it's expensive!
@EmmaAppleBerry2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it seperates both house paint and artists paint oil or not. Also happens in heat too so should be kept around 20°C
