Fuchsias are glorious shade plants that would look so pretty hung from the shady wall. Lavender is a must for any garden and would look beautiful among your blooms. Also some cherry tomatoes and lettuces can easily be grown in a container in a sunny spot. Enjoy!!

You can apply coffee grounds around the base of your plants to help deter snails. It makes the soil acidic, which they don't like. It's worth checking if your flowers enjoy acidic soil though, since not all do. You can also apply copper tape around the top of your flower pots. It will turn most snails around too!

The little white flowers you show around 6:00 are armeria, also called sea pink or sea thrift. The little 5-petalled flowers that you like so much look like the campanula family. To help new trees & perennials get established, deep watering once or twice a week is better than shallow watering more often; it helps them develop deeper roots. Japanese anemones are some of my absolute favorite shade plants - it's really nice because they bloom in fall as many of the other plants are finishing up. I really like how you have the trees espaliered along the back fence to give privacy - what a great idea!

The heart flowers are bleeding hearts! Here in Canada there's a folktale about them. According to it, one day lost to history, a young native mother lost her child, and when she found him, he was dead. Her tears dropped into the ground around his body, and bleeding hearts grew. That's the gist of it that I recall, but my family has used them to mark our losses. When my first cat passed, we buried her and planted one in her memory outside my bedroom window, and though we've long sold the house, it's still there marking my love for her. They are great beautiful blooms and very hardy, as mine was happy living in a desert, and they still do well in more humidity. 😊

Pretty sure your first mystery plant IS a weed but I would wait as well. Second is probably foxglove. Third is definitely bleeding heart. Hostas like more shade and, depending on how the shade works in that corner, it might work better on the shady side. To retain moisture with mulch, make sure it's a thick layer. I've got clay soil too and tilling the soil with mulch/compost really helps over time.

Get some "slakkenhuisjes" for your snails. You pour some cheapie old beer into them and they will crawl in there and (obviously) die. You just shovel a small hole in the ground, pour it all in there, swish it out with some water, and fill it back up again. No need to very thoroughly clean it. But do look in there very regularly because you'll be surprised at how well this works!

Hi Lucy, young, newly planted trees need regular watering to help them establish themselves in their new home. There is something called a tree watering bag, or a slow-release watering bag, that is perfect for such a situation. You wrap it around the tree, fill it up once a week, and the tree will get the water it needs. Also very helpful to help young trees withstand periods of drought in the summer.

To add more plants to the shaded area, you could put planters on the wall of your shed and fill them up with ferns and some colorful annual flowers that enjoy shade (inpatients like shade and you can get them in lots of colors). The heart-shaped flowers are called Bleeding Hearts in English, they should do well in shade so you could try them in a big pot along your shed

You're garden looks great and I love your approach of just letting things grow and seeing how it works, and using the existing plants of course! Amazing! ❤ For your newly planted trees, they need a lot of water! Mulching helps a bit, of course, but I would recommend watering it about once a week (depending on the wheather conditions of course). When watering it's also important to water A LOT, so that the earth gets thouroughly saturated and not just the surface. Just for reference, gardeners calculate about 75-100 litres per small tree per watering, bigger trees even 200 litres... The Anemone you bought grows quite tall (up to a meter or even more) and will soon be too big for this small terracotta pot, but they are a great choice for a blooming perennial and look absolutely stunning in late summer/ early autumn when in bloom. It's one of my favourite flowers actually! And by the way, I'm a landscape architect 😉

Try a yeast, sugar and a little water mix put in an old butter tub add holes in the lid so they can get at the mix, or beer is anther option I use non-alcoholic as it’s cheap and I can drink it as well, they love the smell of it check it every other day and empty it out where the birds can get to the bugs to eat. Keep in mind that slugs and snails love dark damp pots as much as your plants do 😹😹 Ferns do well in full shade specially maidens hair which do well in hanging pots. The garden looks good. Fox glove will grow anywhere, I planted miniature foxgloves and they keep popping up all over the yard in the oddest of places.😹😹

for the slug / snail problem ... place several trays of cheap beer into the ground. The slugs will go for the beer rather than the plants and drown. Also check your neighbors lawns because slugs know no boundaries. Also, check for any infestations of anything new coming into the garden and if pulling out any dead plants treat the soil (heat / chemicals) for established colonies in the soil and also underneath the pavers (new or old) / rocks. Hope this helps!

For shady areas: Peperomias! Peperomias obtsufolias can stay in the shade and they come in three leave patterns/colors. There are tooons of types of peperomias. You could also try a Soleirolia soleirolii. Swedish ivy is also a shady plant. I just don't know which one of those are cold tolerant, if any. Peperomias are native to where I live (Brazil), so if you choose a amazonian one (like the peperomia serpens), they might be sensitive.

Your garden looks great! As for the "shade" plants, you could try ferns, dryopteris for example. Another option is vinca, it's a small evergreen plant, it flowers blue in spring. I think it doesn't need much watering and should be ok in a pot. Both dryopteris and vinca can grow in full shade areas. But foxgloves as well anemona japonica do need some sunlight. Otherwise there won't be many flowers...

Also! Not sure if you were planning on having a veggie garden, but I thought you may be interested in the "square foot gardening" method if you do want one, as you only need 6 inches deep of soil mixture and a 4x4 (you can do smaller if you want!) foot raised garden bed can yield SO MUCH produce when using that method! It could be a great option to not take much space but allow you to still get a decent harvest, it's a method designed by an engineer to be super economical and give the best results in the smallest space 😊

In Dutch we say "Engels gras" although I think the pink version is more common here. More generally, if you want to know what a plant is, highly recommend PlantNet! You just upload a picture of a plant and it tells you which plant you're looking at. Also very nice if you see things in other people's gardens and think "I want that!" 😊 Bonus: PlantNet is a citizen science project on biodiversity so you're adding to the knowledge on which plants are found where by uploading photos!

In your little plant journal, you could add a phenology wheel. If you aren’t sure what that is, it’s a wheel where you keep track of the changes of a natural process over a certain amount of time. For example, the bloom cycle of a flower or tree over a year. Or migratory patterns of birds. You could make one specific for your garden every year, and see how things change over time.

A good trick for keeping the slug/snail population under control is to put little tins of beer all over the garden, mainly with the plants that are under siege. They crawl in, get drunk and drown. No pollinators are hurt by it, its easy to clean up and best of all doesn't spread poison around your yard. We mostly have slugs here, but I imagine it works on snails too. Also, we have so many of the same plants! 😂 I was watching and was like "Ooh! I have that one! Oh, and that one too!"
@dawsie
@dawsie Жыл бұрын
Yep it works on both slugs and snails, I just tip the container out every few days on top of the compost bin but the birds will eat them once they have dried off a lot. Yeast and sugar works well, it’s the yeast in the beer they are after.

Looks great Highly recommend some mulch to help protect the soil and retain moisture. Also makes the beds look nice :)

Everything just keeps getting lovelier! 😍 How about some ferns along that shady wall as well? 😊 Especially a small man fern would look stunning there! They're quite popular for shady garden spots here in Tasmania. Also, just in case you didn't know, foxgloves are EXTREMELY toxic, every part of them is poisonous, they affect the heart very quickly and they're very attractive to children so something to keep in mind if you plan to have children in the future.

I live in the US in the rural desert outside of Las Vegas where the summers average at 90-110F (32-43C) and get about 5 inches of rain A YEAR. Nothing that grows here is green/leafy. I am so envious of your garden and wish that I could have one.

That weed loiks like goldenrod. Beutiful yellow flowers and bugs love them. If they can become a problem or not will depend on therr you live. In Sweden they tend to take over everything and not give room to other plants and spread like nuts. But verry importent is that this don't means it's a weed in other areas. Plants not react the same way everywhere. So read what they are like in your area.

Rhododendron is the state flower of Washington State, not the capital but a part of the PNW. I think you would love it over here;) I can't wait to plant a lilac soon. I have been wanting one but didn't know which one to get. Maybe California Lilac like yours. The garden looks great. Thank you for sharing it;)

Greetings! Have you considered a wisteria for your lovely garden? I feel like it might fit your taste quite well (the most magical purple colour) and it's very easy to care for, too. :) I love mine, even though it doesn't get great conditions and is developing rather slowly (still keeping it in a pot due to moving) I've had it for a few years, they only start blooming at ~7 years I believe and seem to do just fine in partial shade until then. Eventually they can get so big, they'll grab enough light everywhere ^^ Only thing is it's not actually a native one.

Oh I adore wisteria! Everyone keeps warning me against them though, apparently they can be quite horrible to keep up with. Maybe one day if I find a contained spot for it 😁

Snails are repelled by copper! If you have copper pennies or copper wire you can put it around the plants that they like and it will help keep them away.

The "GrowVeg" youtube channel (based out of UK) has a couple videos on how to deter slugs/snails. And the "Really Big Plant" youtube channel (based out of CA, USA) just had a video that they used copper tape and mesh on the bottom of her pots and apparently that deters slugs too
