I love your videos and your passion for history. This is very practical. So, pomades can be petroleum based or water based? I am going to attempt to make some. In this time, was this made at home more frequently or was this a trade? Is a vegetable based hard fat preferred or a lard?

I really enjoy your videos, thank you so much! I have two questions: Can you make this with a vegetable based hard fat, like coconut or palm oil? Also, how do you wash it in rose water? Thanks!

Thank You! Yes you could. You would have to work with the amounts to make it the specific consistency you want. Washing in rose water is taking flower water and washing it after rendering it and then letting it sit in rose water ( in a warm place)- working it so all the icky stuff can separate and then you would do the process again and again until the fat is clean and clear.. Once it is clean.. the flower water will have scented the fat some. If you are using vegetable fats and such you don't need to wash them.. these days they come all pretty and ready for use. Thanks for your comment.

So, bitter almond oil is what I'm looking for?
@LBCCHistorical5 жыл бұрын
You can use any oil you prefer. It doesn't have to be bitter almond oil, it could be sweet almond, jojoba, or other oils like grape-seed. Depending on the specific historical timeframe you are looking to reproduce sort of dictates what your choices of oils are. If you aren't trying to reproduce a specific time frame, then you can use what ever oil you prefer.

Thank you so much! I'm going to be playing around with making pomatum this week in prep for a quick Insta tutorial for my museum next week. This video has been so helpful. I will ping LBCC for folks who would like to buy pomatum and powder ready made :-) @@LBCCHistorical

Where did you get the jar for the pomade?
@LBCCHistorical4 жыл бұрын
The jar came from our inventory. We had a potter make a whole bunch of reproduced 18th century pomade and medicinal jars. I still have a lot of them, I loved them so much, I never put them in the shop. If you would like one, Send us an Etsy mail and I can send you a photo of the ones we have left.
