Boy, what fun to see other folks with the same vintage lifestyle! Love the music, appliances, vintage pound cake recipe, but especially vintage appliances, and seeing them in use. That '48 Kelvinator is absolutely beautiful. You would need 10 men and a boy to manage moving that Kelvinator for "stove swap" ! There is more steel in that than today's semi trucks! Thank you Hans, Kevin, and Ralph for sharing. You guys did a swell job. See if you can break Hans in to do some stuff on a KZbin channel as well,(if he doesn't already have one), as I would love watching that in addition to "Cavalcade of Food". There is always room for more videos and information like this. Thanks a million, guys!

This pound cake is the real deal. It's very similar to what I've made for years, since I was in high school in the 1970s. I've never tried using self-rising flour, just baking powder, so I'll have to try that. I always beat the flour and milk and vanilla in by hand at the last. Mocksville is only a few miles from my house. We go near there, through "greasy corner" to get to my aunt's in Woodleaf. Thanks, Hans, Kevin and Ralph for doing this video.

Ok...to say that I got a little excited during this episode is an understatement! Hans has a fabulous collection of vintage appliances and I have to say that's about the most beautiful pound cake I've ever seen. I've been around pound cakes my whole life (a staple in the South as you said) but have never seen such a large one! I've always used my grandmother's and mom's recipes but I'm going to have to try this one! Cheers!

Adam Bryan Hi Adam!! I knew you would love this one with all of his vintage appliances! Needless to say, I could have spent all day looking at everything in his collection. Give this recipe a try - it really makes for a wonderful pound cake. I don't know if they have Adluh Flour in your area, but it made for a very nice cake! Thanks for watching!

Love the vintage appliances. I used to have an old corningware percolator, but the handle broke off of it. Made the best coffee. I do have an old West Bend stand mixer(yeah it has that spinning bowl feature also), a Moulinette made by Moulinex and was mfg in France(came with 3 double sided slicing and dicing blades and a feeder chute that you put a bowl under,, small chopper/grinder and a one speed blender) .Also an old Osterizer/Galaxy model blender that a standard mason jar will fit in it, instead of using the jug.Back in the 1980's when I started living on my own and could not afford new appliances, I would frequent yard sales to gather up kitchen gear.Remember the old General Motors fridge I mentioned that I got for 10 bucks and it needed to be hauled up a set of stairs with ropes and a couple of strong armed boyfriends. LOL. Love the double oven range.And that pound cake Hans baked is a beauty. I agree, ya don't need fruit, glaze or ice cream with that. Have a safe trip back home you guys. Will be watching for new videos and I have a request when you are back at your cottage, can you do some BBQ outdoor cooking shows?

***** Thanks, Shalimar!! Sounds like you have a vintage collection too!! These old appliances are really great - and I agree about the old percs making the best coffee! We will try to work in some outdoor cooking before the end of summer - thanks for the suggestion!!

Hey Guys in your search for vintage appliances, do you ever run across gas stoves? My Grandma had the neatest, little gas stove, it was very small - I have never seen a stove so small. Her kitchen was very tiny but, despite the tiny kitchen and stove, she cooked some amazing meals and baked some amazing cakes! It was the only stove she ever owned. If I am remembering correctly, did Hans send you an electric hand mixer Kevin? I think you mentioned this in one of your videos a while back. That pound cake was nothing short of spectacular!! I think I need to try this recipe soon. Thanks for sharing; hope you are having a great vacation. ~kendra

Great video.....cake looks absolutely wonderful. I was surprised to hear that pound cake is considered a staple only in the south.....my grandmother who came from England, made pound cake just like this....many, many times.....from a recipe taught to her by HER mother. I think pound cake is simply a staple of those who like delicious baked goods :P
@cavalcadeoffood9 жыл бұрын
Heather Smedley Hi Heather! Thanks for watching! I think you're right - everyone who appreciates good baking likes pound cake. You see it from time to time here in Mich., but in the South it seems to be everywhere - many restaurants have it on the menu, but good pound cakes can be found anywhere there is good baking going on!
@edwinpowell2249 жыл бұрын
Heather Smedley Heather, it would make perfect sense that pound cake would have originated as an English delicacy since the South, particularly the Carolinas, was settled primarily by the English and the Scots. Many Southern recipes have their roots in English fare, although sometimes with a dash of African and Native American influence.

Hi Al - my friend Hans made this cake and the recipe comes from a bag of Adluh Flour, a local flour milled in North Carolina. Here's the recipe: 1/2 lb Butter 1/2 cup Crisco 3 cups Sugar 6 Eggs large 3 cups Adluh Plain Flour 1 cup Adluh Self-rising Flour 1 cup Milk 2 tsp Vanilla Extract 1 tsp Lemon Extract Start with a cold oven. Do NOT preheat oven. Cream butter, Crisco and sugar together. Add eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each. Add flour and milk alternately, again mixing well after each addition. Add extracts. Pour batter into a well-greased and floured tube pan. Bake at 325 degrees for approximately one hour and 15 minutes.

Here it is: 1/2 lb Butter 1/2 cup Crisco 3 cups Sugar 6 Eggs large 3 cups Adluh Plain Flour 1 cup Adluh Self-rising Flour 1 cup Milk 2 tsp Vanilla Extract 1 tsp Lemon Extract Start with a cold oven. Do NOT preheat oven. Cream butter, Crisco and sugar together. Add eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each. Add flour and milk alternately, again mixing well after each addition. My grandmother was from Columbia, S.C. and she swore by Adluh flour but she always pronounced it 'AD-lah', not 'AD-loo'. I remember her making pound cakes from scratch like that and flavoring them with vanilla and almond extract. The aroma of it baking was indeed sublime and I have never tasted any pound cake to match it. Pound cake gets its name because the traditional recipe calls for a pound each of butter, flour, and sugar.
