I think this session is a perfect example of why the SOURCE was, is, and always will be KING. The players, the rooms, the performance, the instruments. The things you’re actually recording. Yes the audio gear helps, yes Soothe is amazing, but ultimately you’re just highlighting those fantastic raw tracks so they blend together. Imagine if you had been monitoring with your current setup while tracking! (That’ll keep you up at night). Amazing work as always!

Thanks for the master class! :) The amount detail you put into this stuff is really paramount to what makes the record go. And the original mixes on the whole album are just phenomenal and no need to sell it short or "could be better"... just a great album all the way around top to bottom. You could deconstruct all the tunes from that record as far as I'm concerned. Just a big thanks from me. Also want to mention great job on the general flow of the video. That was a TON of stuff to cover and you did it very well.

No summing mixer this time then? I think this comparative could be the perfect example of how the debate of ITB vs OTB, hybrid vs Console is no longer relevant. It's amazing how you improved an old mix (done with loads of great analog gear) just with plugins and a great analog bus compressor. You put the light on the most important stuff: technique and how you listen is way more important than gear. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and hats off to your clever, flexible and humble approach to the art of mixing.

Yeah I think if I was actually mixing this for release I probably would use my passive summing mixer but its a pretty subtle difference. I'm pretty darn happy with the ITB version and just H/W insert for the UnFairchild :)

From an artistic view I think both mixes sound equally as great. The old mix does possess a a more surreal and chewy feeling, manly because of how the vocal effect tickles the mind hehe. This was and is one of my all-time favorite albums. Just the whole thing was amazing through and through. Perfect band, perfect guests, perfect songwriting, performances and mixing. When it came out I was still in the hospital due to the lymphedema in my legs. I was constantly getting infections and almost died about three times. It was just a really rough period emotionally, physically and financially. This album brought a ton of light into my life. It gave me the inspiration to get back into playing guitar and any time I'd feel down it was one of the albums I'd go back to and listen to (the others being T-Ride, the second Gorillaz album and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road).

MAKING RECORDS with ERIC VALENTINE I feel you on the side chain delay compensation. The only way to access it unfortunately is to have an HDX card and use the HDX driver. They’ve made it an HDX feature only. I personally do not like the HDX driver. I feel like I get a lot of CPU errors with it compared to the built in output. I use pro tools ultimate as well. I like doing the gate trigger with this. I can’t attest if it’s sample accurate, but it’s sounds like it’s working ok. I like using it with waves in-phase to align the close mics to overheads and rooms with the side chain delay compensation. I love your videos and am a huge fan of the 3eb self titled record you did. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. They’ve helped me a lot.

That was interesting comparing the UAD Fairchild against the UnFairchild. The bloom was 100% noticeable and THAT is the thing I care about more than any gain in bass, etc. though- what the hardware is doing to the bass is really sweeeet. Damn you! Got to start saving for a UnFairchild :)

Could you tell us how the guitar was tracked? Mics, pres, compressor, guitars used. Thanks for this!! Greetings from Argentina!!
@mrwev5 жыл бұрын
Yes! I cant believe I forgot to talk about this in the video... Doah!! On his marshall I typically had a 57, 421 and Royer 121 that I could blend together. The two other amps only had one mic on them. The AC30 was a Neumann 582 and the Silvertone Twin Twelve was an AKG 451EB. I typically used a vintage Beyer 160 for his solos to give the solos a different character. I also typically placed that mic 5 or 6 feet from the cab pointed at the center of the 4 speakers in the 4x12 cab. I was tracking everything through an EMI TGI console so I was using those preamps and occasionally the built in Zener compressors. If I wasn't using the Zener comnpressor than it would be a distressor or dbx 160 or a UA 1176. At this time and leading up to it, Slash pretty much always only recorded with his original Les Paul. Which is actually not a Gibson. It is Les Paul knock off made by a guy named Kris Derrig. It was bought when GnR was working on the appetite record. The guitar was the answer he was looking for. He loved it then and still does. There has been some issues with the sound of the pickups drifting over time. He was working with Dimarzio to try and get the original sound back while we were working on the RnFR record. It became a bit of a running joke in the session. When we were getting ready to record a new part I would say "wadda ya think, the Les Paul and Marshall on this one?" Haha!

Man I'm not a drummer.....but that snare....so rewarding.

I know its not a nice solution but did you try to set the sidechain and then freeze or commit both tracks. Sometimes when you commit bith tracks the delay compensation works better than the realtime one.specially when the delay buffer its exceeded like in a linear phase eq, high oversample shit or acustica audio plugin.
@chrisdover85075 жыл бұрын
This is sooo good to watch. Can definitely hear Levee in those drums. I really hoped if GnR did a new album you’d be called. I really didn’t find the Baskette album pleasing sonically. No offence to him obviously as he’s a very talented cat. I think in regard to you trying to ‘better’ your old mix, you obviously pushed it to a place where you felt something and we felt it too. Perfection comes from imperfection.
