thanks for clarifying this I was very confused by quisiera since it is considere 'imperfect' past tense. Now i understand better that is is a more polite form of quiero.

Quisieras bailar conmigo.? Is this correct usage of quisieras for 'Would you like to dance with me"?

Would ‘me gustaría’ be acceptable to use for ‘I would like’. I’m never sure which is the best way to ask for a food choice at a hotel buffet, for example.

¡Hola! Yes, both of these are absolutely fine and correct. You can say "me gustaría tomar un café" or "quisiera tomar un café". These two sentences are correct and are pretty much interchangeable. Just remember that the verb "gustar" is used differently to the verb "querer", though!

I have recently watched some videos about ordering coffee and food in restaurants from Spain. In all of them, they say the best thing to say is “me pone” and advise against using me gustaría as this suggests it’s not an order.

Hi there, thanks for getting in touch. That's correct, we tend to use the imperative as in "me pone" in Spain when we are at a café or restaurant. However, that can sound impolite in other countries or other situations, so it's important to keep that in mind, which is why we have included it too. For instance, we won't use the imperative at a friends/acquaintance's house or at a café or restaurant in Latin America. Hope this helps y gracias por la pregunta!

@@coffeebreaklanguages you said “we tend to use the imperative as in “me pone” in Spain. “ I don’t think me pone is the imperative

Hi there, thank you for your message. You are right and we apologise for the confusion! What we meant is using "me pone", which is a statement, as a mild command. There're further examples of this on daily conversations, like: me dices luego (tell me later), más tarde hablamos (let's speak later), te veo después (I'll see you after). All of these are statements using the present indicative but stating what may happen later. Sorry again for the confusion and thank you for the comment! 😊

I've used Quisiera many times instead of Yo Quiero because I understand it's more polite. But is it gender specific? ie Should I use QuisierO instead of QuisierA. My Spanish is not that good. Necesito esdudiar mas :)

If I am asking if someone would like coffee, would I say "Quisiera un cafe?". If I wanted coffee would I ask the same thing?
@coffeebreaklanguages
@coffeebreaklanguages 3 жыл бұрын
¡Hola! 'Quisiera' is the imperfect subjunctive conjugation of the verb 'querer' for both the 'yo' form and the 'usted' form. This means that if you wanted to ask somebody if they'd like a coffee, using the usted form, you could ask them ¿Quisiera un café? Hope this helps!
