Nice clean crystallization! I guess you saw the Wikipedia article on S4N4 where they state "S4N4 is thermochromic, changing from pale yellow below −30 °C to orange at room temperature to deep red above 100 °C". This stuff can actually be yellow and still be the product you wanted!
@ExplosionsAndFire5 жыл бұрын
I think the dioxane solution was a lot more red when hot during the soxhlet extraction too, so perhaps I was too quick to dismiss it. But the procedure calls for slow, room temp evaporation of the dioxane to avoid any explosions, and I didn't think it was worth that risk and excessive time unless I thought I was going to get a product out that was better than I already had

Ever hear of the Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments? You can get a copy in PDF, and while it's really oriented towards young teens it's full of some rather surprising things... like page 32 with a little blurb on making Nitrogen Dioxide in a test tube. EDIT: Guess I could elaborate, it's from 1960 and has a lot of offsides info on unusual sources for chemicals and some really interesting low-budget equipment setups. Oh, and enough "hazardous" amateur chemistry to get it pulled...

You should release some of your more risky experiments on BitChute, where people care less about warnings. Then release a short KZbin video to advertise the BitChute one. If someone is capable of making S4N4, it's highly likely that they know the risks, everyone else just likes watching. Fantastic video mate, I love your content.

While the explosion risks are clear, aren't you a little concerned about the carcinogenic properties of some of the solvents you are using? If you can smell them they are likely to be at a concentration to do some long term health damage. I am writing from personal experience.
@ExtractionsAndIre5 жыл бұрын
I mean, yes and no. I'm not huffing large amounts of benzene, and I'm not spending long hours in contact with it. If I was doing this sort of thing every day, then I'd certainly be more worried
@nigeljohnson98205 жыл бұрын
@@ExtractionsAndIre I did not think my exposure to solvents was that long or intense, but I still managed to get a cancer with links to solvents exposure from many years ago. Benzene and toluene still ring alarm bells for me, as do some of the chlorinated alkanes. I know you are a chemist by profession and will no doubt have attended the safety lectures. You have clearly accepted the immediate risks of the interesting compounds you make, however it is easy to ignore the more insidious dangers that may not become apparent for decades after exposure. From a statistical point of view the life expectancy for professional chemists is a lot higher than physicists or mathematicians, they also do their best work later in life. Mathematicians are over the hill at 25:-).
