This is amazing! You two are getting so self sufficient and its nice to be able to achieve things that defy the narrative of constant consumerism. Good job and looking forward to more videos on what you accomplish next !

This is so cool! I'm definitely putting "tan my own leather with acorns" to my bucket list to wait for the moment when I have a skin available. I've also made a pair of moccasin-style shoes for historical re-enactment from reclaimed furniture leather. It's surprisingly easy to make these basic footwear styles! And they are comfortable to wear, the moccasins even work on snowy ground when worn with woollen socks!

These turned out great! I have a friend who makes his own MukLuk style boots and he glues 2 pieces of leather together for the soles to make them last a bit longer.

If you wanted something that lasts even longer, you could use some tire rubber - I bet you could get an old tire for free from your local car mechanic.

Awesome sandals! ...and cool that they're made from a naturally treated leather, rather than leather treated with harsh, toxic chemicals.

Ewww, but human pee is also used as a deer repellent. My parents used it on our saplings when I was a teenager. Teenage me refused to squat and pee over an outside bucket, lol. It worked though!!

Thank you for this video I am SHOCKED by what it has opened my eyes to. At first I was thinking about how to reuse ♻️ the scraps left from the shoes and then I realized ….why don’t I have scraps from making my own shoes/clothing etc…because then my select items would actually FIT me and my body type nicely instead of made for the masses. Keep spreading your adventure I already grow a bunch of my own food for my family and I have a sewing machine somewhere. Thanks for lighting the fire under me ❤

They could use the scraps as a tie, like Sylvia had for her worker's apron or on the end of a loofah, or as decorative tassels on clothing, shoes, or pillows.

I have been wanting all leather sandals in part to have less plastic around and also to allow earthing in areas where there might be stingy bitey things about. I definitely want to try my hand at doing something like this for myself.

This is so COOL dear Sylvan, yes nothing like making shoes or in this case sandals from something natural like deer leather, you're of the same mind as Brett @Vitality Massage, he's invented a back roller, but made totally of natural products, no synthetic junk plastic and he also developed a custom-made to your size sandal, also using leather, natural rubber(the one that is extracted from rubber trees), etc. Well thing for sure being Made in the USA, either by Brett or you Sylvan is 100% top-notch quality both in materials and manual labor.😁👍

Wondering why you made his sandals with the “soft” side of the leather facing down. It seems to me like it’s going to get ripped apart much more easily than if you had done the tougher, ‘skin’ side? Is there a particular reason?

Just wondering if you've ever grown any peanuts? i dont think theyre native to your area, but they seem like theyd be so good for calories and oil (and for fixing peanut butter cravings if you get them). Sorry if youve already answered this somewhere

We used to grow them when we lived in North Carolina, but they have a really long season so we haven’t tried them up in PA yet. We get a lot of nuts from the woods for our nut butter 🙂 (mostly hickory and black walnuts)

Hi, I really curious why did you choose corn as your staple (I assume it’s what you grow the most) and not potatoes? Ive seen a lot of people who live off what the grow use potatoes as their main carb so I wonder is it just a preference thing or you decided on corn for a specific purpose?

12:50 Not to be a spoilsport but if you walked barefoot regularly, your feet would become "hobbit like" naturally. I have no problem hiking over rocky trails & gravel after a lifetime of barefoot hiking. (not a lifestyle choice, just never found a pair of shoes that doesn't hurt me more than the ground)
