I like to add similar scribbled brush marks but I feel like they get too same-y. Love your idea of writing backwards! Going to try it on a piece I've been working on for a while and see if it helps finish it out :D

It looks like here it was a graphite pencil but I love BOTH!!! also dipping them in water makes them darker!!!!

I like to use black gesso as it is thicker but I do like to add in some dark purple, or a tad of other colors I have in my palette. I use black a lot and my favorites are the Golden high flow from the bottle or any black gesso!!

Why don't you tell us the liquid that you are applying as your foundation?

Robert I am using the Golden HIGH FLOW Titanium White and in this painting, just a blend of some gray. I use that High Flow Titanium white in ALL of my paintings, I have HUGE jugs of it. In this case I blended it with another color, or you will see me just squirt it on the painting from the bottle, I love it so much. The writing is also the white high flow.
