This is part one to a series on how to start abstract paintings. This first video will share the markers, crayons, graphite... all the color that I use to start an abstract painting. I also share with you many of the mark making tools I use to get my abstracts started. The following videos will show paintings that are started using these tools and techniques.

Pamela Caughey's video on tools: • 044 - Pamela Caughey -...
1. Caran d'Ache. Neocolor II water-soluble crayons. Highly pigment concentration. These Crayons are softer than colored pencils and extremely responsive to a wet brush. You can use them in Wet and dry techniques. They are soft enough to smudge with your fingertips, but firmer than oil pastels. Scrape off one or more layers of color to create an engraved sgraffito effect.
2. LYRA Aquacolor Water soluble wax crayons. They are a lot like the NeoColor 11 water soluable crayons. They are easy to blend. Nontoxic.
• Water soluble and easy to blend
• Intense pigmentation
• Highly light-fast
• Unlimited range of shades
3. Art Crayons by Marabu. I got mine on Amazon. They are a water-soluble wax crayon that are Soft, creamy, and very lightfast. Each one is a highly pigmented vivid color yet transparent. These crayons blend easily and are suitable for both wet and dry techniques on canvas, paper, wood, and more.
4. Graphit Lyra Crayons. Water soluble graphite crayons. They can be erased when dry. You can get a sharpener for them. They come in paper so your hands stay clean. They slide on your paper. Great for drawing and shading.
5. Bistro Chalk Markers. These are Opaque, water based pigmented markers. They have different sizes of tips. They are mainly used on chalkboards, windows or dry erase boards, but I love them in my paintings. I love how they are drippy. I used them to make dots or marks that will drip.
6. China Markers. Or Grease markers. Fade proof and moisture resistant. You pull the string to sharpen. Great for making marks in your paint.
7. Pastels. Chalk Pastels and pencil Pastels. Hard pastels are made from the same ingredients as soft pastels, except they contain more binder and less pigment. This means that their colors are not as intense but they don't crumble or break as easily. Because they're more stable, hard pastels are especially suited to drawing techniques.
8. Stabillo Chalk Pastel coloring pencils. Use to dry blend or smudge them. They are pretty brilliant in coloring.
9. Pastel & pastel pencils are opaque and colored pencils are semi-transparent.
10. Faber- Castell. Soft Pastel. Soft chalk like medium. High pigment. Easy to mix.
NOTE: Needs a fixative on top like Krylon Workable Fixatif clear spray to protect the pastel from smudging.
11. Painters. These are water based, non-toxic markers that can be used on paper, ceramic, wood, metal and glass. They dry to a permanent, opaque finish. They come in different tips, fine, medium and chisel. I like them as they can give a drip effect little marks around the painting.
12. ArtGraf. Soft, rich, and water-soluble pigmented Tailor Chalk. They are an exciting tool for drawing and painting on wet or dry surfaces, they look like a piece of chalk used by tailors to mark fabric. These unique tools feature an exclusive blend of pigments and binders. I love how they react to water. I got mine on Amazon but you can get them from Blick or other places. They run around $6 to $8 each depending if you get them separately or in sets.
13. Chalk Paint. Art metallic paint tube.
14. ArtGraf Graphite Stick. Water soluble soft sticks of a unique blends of graphite-carbon and binders. They can used wet or dry. I got mine on Amazon.
15. Charcoal sticks. They are called vine or willow charcoal. Just a way to make marks of dark lines. I put mine in a case to help hold it.
16. Derwent Inktense Pencils. Like watercolor pencils with a firmer texture that gives a brilliant intensity color. Can be used dry to give a rich intense color or with water to create a vivid translucent effect.
17. Just a regular pencil
18. Derwent ArtBars. Made in London. Water soluble bars. Creamy vivid wax based. Goes on canvas like an oil pastel. The shape makes it easy to add dimension to your painting. You can draw over them to cover up a previous mark. They come in a tin of many different colors.
19. Derwent Inktense Blocks bring a new sense of freedom to the drawing and painting experience. They are water-soluble ink blocks that can be used dry or wet. Dry, they deliver pure, vibrant color.

Betsy, they are called Plein Air brushes. Right now they are hard to find, BUT you can make one by getting a long stick from the yard and duck taping a paint brush to the stick. I have had people in my class do this when they can't find them. They come and go in the stores at odd times.
