EP 074: Pocketing £100k from a trading comp, and making simplicity a priority w/ John Walsh aka Black Cabbie Trader
The backstory of John; in 2012 he entered a competition-the City Index Trading Academy. The idea was to take a group of people with very little market experience to see how well they would perform as active traders, over the span of 5 weeks. John came out on top and won the £100,000 prize money which was up for grabs.
He’s of course continued trading ever since, and has developed into quite the trend/position trader-focused on US equities, making simplicity an absolute top priority. He’s also a black cab driver in London, which you’ll hear more about shortly.
In this episode we chat about; the competition, John’s trading methodology, why you must ‘stay out of your own way’ (as John puts it), and plenty more.

Love these traders that didn't come up from a trading or financial background and give great insight on how to trade smart and simple. Solid podcast.

one thing that I have learned from his interview and one thing he has that others don't have is simplicity. His thought process as well as decision making proses is super simple, no second thought no expectation. Real gem here found after 5 years published lol

No doubt, as a cab driver, John's info retention must be off the charts (pun fully intended). Great interview John and Aaron.

This interview is absolutely awesome. This gave me a lot of ideas: 1) do long on 52 week high. 2) do short on 52 week short. 3) believe in your system and dont change it frequently. 4) dont be in hurry to buy a lambo, give it some time

Can't find him either. BlackCabbieTrader.com is gone. Idk maybe he blew up his account. The cabbie to successful trader seemed to me to be a little bit of a stretch goal.

@@walkerpercy8702 Also a London Cabbie is different to a taxi driver anywhere else in the world. The test they have to do, the knowledge, to get their licence takes some drivers 5/6 years to compete. It takes an insane amount of repetitive, consistent hard work and discipline, plus the one to one oral examinations are done under an enormous amount of pressure, so could totally see how someone who has completed the knowledge could make a successful trader. A lot of the required elements to make a success of it would already be instilled in them.

@@jamesmcgrath3841 What's your biggest takeaway then? I don't remember anything from the podcast except that he was a cab driver and took part in a competition. I found many other "Chat With Traders" podcasts much more helpful and memorable.

It is, it’s extra affirmations on a successful strategy, make your own valuation models, than in your sector just watch orderflow. It’s not rocket science. Retail traders can make way more than institutional traders.
