Hahaha such a funny video. I agree with a relaxed approach and not to get too hung up about some of the myths which are perpetuated all the time. I am not getting why people ask for recipes all the time. They are everywhere. And they can surely not ask for your own? Just for fun I thought I should put one here: 65% avocado refined 25% coconut, 10 % castor, water, lye. This makes a cleansing value of 14 I think. And conditioning about 63. Thanks for sharing with us today. ❤😋😊

I was getting all freaked out getting caught up in other soapers hype that I became afraid to relax and do what I personally worked so hard learning and researching myself. I made it more complicated than it needed to be. I was convinced that no one would buy and use my soap if I didn't follow all these rules and politically correct things other "seasoned"soapers said was law. LOL. Then one day I woke up. I have been making and selling soap for years now, developed my own way, I am doing very well and my product is loved. B Greg.. like I said.. there a right way and a wrong way. Palm production will never go away. That's a fact. But, there are new, sustainable farming practices that are being employed to stop, and in some cases reverse deforestation. You just have to do a little research to find the right source.

I love your take on soap making. As I'm more science-minded rather than woo-minded, I find your takes on gloves/containers/ingredients/tools very refreshing! I do have one question for you, as I've been researching into CP soap making, I've seen various comments about canola oil when using it in any larger amount about the bars going rancid easier. Have you had any issues with that? (A couple days ago I did some test batches to try to find my own recipe I like, but haven't had any of them long enough to try yet) I have used canola in two of them and am waiting to see what happens, and how I like the bars. Have some Palm oil arriving today, so plan on doing a few more test batches of a couple different recipes I made.

I like to be a little science and a little art 😂. I absolutely love canola in soaps! I haven't found it to go rancid or get the orange spots any more than any other oil honestly. I have even made some that were straight canola and even after a year they were great. Have fun with the experimentation! Yesterday we made three experimental batches. Mornings soap, goat's milk soap (new to us), and a dead sea mid soap! Trying to get my spark back...lol

I picked up a bar of your Clean Cotton bath soap and I gotta say I love the way it lathers. Feel free to hate on me but I need simplicity in recipes so I just picked up a 55 oz bag of Brambleberry's Lots of Lather Quickmix for my maiden batch of soap. I plan on superfatting at 5% so I don't get a lye heavy soap. Is 5% enough? I also picked up a bottle of Egyptian Dragon fragrance oil. I'm a fan of Royalty Soaps but I plan on KISSing my soap making (Keep It Simple Stupid) so I probably won't be trying out designs. I picked up some colorants but I will just be doing solid colors. And yes I picked up some sodium lactate.

I really like that you give a simple approach to soaping. So many videos scare me from trying it! They also make you worry about what containers you use and about a million other things 🙄, like you mentioned. You make it look so much easier. Have wanted to make soap for a couple years now. Thank you for the recipe and the helpful video! Just wanted to know, I thought you didn't have to super fat. Is that just precautionary? I guess lye heavy means too high a percentage of lye to oils. And how can you use the soap within 24 hrs. Does it saponify that quickly and just needs to harden with water evaporation? Do you test the ph? Thanks again 😊
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 5 жыл бұрын
You're going to be super fatting to make sure the lye is definitely used up and to keep the soap from being too drying. Lye heavy means there's some lye left in the soap after saponification is finished. Saponification happens pretty much in the first 18-24 hours. Usually quicker. Although the soap will improve and get a little more gentle over time, the main reason for me to wait is for water evaporation and hardness. I rarely test pH. Most bath soap are going to be a little high ph and that's very difficult to avoid.

I use mixing bowls I purchased from DOLLAR TREE! Made a very NICE batch of Fireball Whiskey soap in them (with actual Fireball in it). Seriously, soap making should NOT completely wipeout the bank account when it comes to containers. And talking about lye burns...wash your hands and apply some vinegar to it right away and it immediately reverses the burn. Though I do wear gloves, I don't wear the goggles because they steam up and then I can't see what I'm doing! I and everyone around me are safer if I don't put them on. I wear glasses, so that helps.

Jon ... do you cover you soap moulds, or just let them sit as is? Is is winter where I live ( only as low as about 13c at night inside) so would you do anything to them? If you leave them as is , does the soap go through gel and does it matter? Also, what makes your soap ok to use the next day? Is it safe to sell with a week or two? thankyou
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 жыл бұрын
The soap is safe once saponification is complete.. Usually a day or two. It does get better over time though. I don't cover my molds and most of my soaps go through a partial gel. I don't really care if they gel or not. They turn out great either way 😁 If they get hard enough, you can sell them in about a week but keep in mind they'll keep cutting for several more weeks. Have fun!

Have you done a video on how to re-batch lye heavy soap? and how would I know if my batch came out lye heavy? How soon would I know? Do I need to warm up liquid oils?
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 жыл бұрын
If doing cold process, you'll know the next day when you go to cut. The soap could be brittle if lye heavy or hard to cut. Then, you touch the soap to the tip of your tongue. If you get a zap (like very sour) then it's probably lye heavy. I haven't done a video on that because I'm not a firm believer in rebatching lye heavy soap since you don't know how heavy it is. No good way to make it right since the measurements were messed up.

Hi Jon, I'm just trying to get my head round using Soapcalc and got flummoxed at Soy Flakes and Sodium Lactate? Is it important to add them into the calculator? I couldn't find them anywhere in the list. Many thanks in advance, kindest regards James.

For the soy flakes you would use hydrogenated soy. For the sodium lactate you don't need to add that. It's up to 1 FL oz per pound of base oils.

This is funny. Thank you for sharing. One question why do you use the soy wax?
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 жыл бұрын
It's high in stearic acid so the lather is dense and stable. It also helps make a harder bar. 😁 Works great in shave soap too!

@@unclejonssoap Does the soy wax make the bar last longer and does it help with standing water?
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 жыл бұрын
Not really. Because sit wax is really just oil in the end. A little beeswax would help some with longevity though.

That means once I pour the soap into the mold I will be able to (in 24 hours later) be able to remove the soap loaf from the mold, cut it into bars, and start using the soap 😁

hi! can I replace soy flakes for bee wax, and palm oil for another oil? What if I use essential oils instead of fragrance? thank you for sharing this video with us :)
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 жыл бұрын
Essential oils can be good but you'll be limited on the number and types of scents you can do. Also, keep in mind that essential oils can be just as dangerous as fragrance oils.. sometimes more. So watch the amount you use. As for substitutes, you would need to figure out what oils you want to use and run them through a lye calculator to figure out all the proper amounts.

You'll probably hear that 100% Olive oil soap is soft too. If you do a 25-50% water discount and bring it to a medium trace it'll come out super hard! I like making my soaps look pretty but I keep the oils simple. I use lard, coconut oil, olive oil & soybean oil. Sometimes I'll throw in something else but those 4 are my "staples". 😉

@unclejonssoap

They are! I would check the SDS sheet to see what additives are in your soy flakes before using them in soap though. Try to use one with almost zero extra ingredients in them.

Just getting started with soap making. . . If you don't want to use 4 oz. of fragrance do you add more water, more oil, more??? to compensate? OR how does it affect the recipe?
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 жыл бұрын
Just add less fragrance. You really don't even need any. But.. keep in mind, the less you add the faster the scent fades away. All soap loses its scent over time any way but handmade tends to go faster especially when using lower amounts of FO or EO.

Any candle supply should have them. The beads should be good too as long as you have soy with as little additives as possible.

Can you use salt or sugar, or salt & sugar in water before mixing lye in instead of sodium lactate? I wonder what will happen.
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 жыл бұрын
Sugar is mainly to boost lather. Salt will harden the bar. You just need to make sure you experiment with the amount of salt you use. Too much and the bar becomes brittle and hard to cut. Also, make sure it is completely dissolved before making your soap batch. Otherwise it could create issues.

@@unclejonssoap Thank you for your reply; especially, prompt reply. I am gathering all ingredients and equipment to start my first experiment of soap making. This is exciting!! Just realize that I have all kinds of oils and butters one ever needs in soap making. I will just start with 3 oils recipe to begin with. My soap won't have any color, but I plan to use some of my infused chamomile and macha green tea olive oil.

Weigh out the same in ounces or grams that you would use in water and then freeze the milk into cubes. Then dump the cubes into your lye mixing pitcher or bowl and add the lye slowly until dissolved and the ice (milk) is melted. That's it!
