Hi Kevin and Ralph, another fine video! You make it the same way as my mother used to with onions celery and carrots ( mom also added one bay leaf, which was later discarded). This is such a satisfying meal on a chilly evening. Just one tip you may want to try next time that my mom always did. Dump and rinse the peas to rid them of all that foam which my mom said contributes to pea soup being gassy. Start with fresh water for the softened peas before adding your ingredients.

Hi MrScottie68 - thanks so much for the tip. I will try it the next time I make it. Luckily, I usually don't find the soup too gassy but a little extra help never hurts!! I like the bay leaf, also, that would impart a nice flavor. Thanks!

I am making split pea soup with my Christmas left over ham bone with some ham on it. I really enjoyed this show The large Faberware stainless steel pot you used is what I will be using too, I inherited it from my Mom, I also have the star collander, which also was left to me from my Mom as well! You probably will find it hard to believe, I have the Mexican platter you cut the meat on too, which I believe my Mom collected from the neighborhood show, (Nortown show on 7 Mile Rd. near Van Dyke), they use to encourage people to come to their theatre with free dishware. I love your show, you bring all the memories of living in Detroit and my childhood back to me. I am 74, I use to go to St. Louis the King Church and School and I am Polish/German and lived a "Leave It To Beaver" life in the 50's and 60's. I really miss those days. My Dad use to go to church where the Capucian Monks use to have their soup kitchen.

Hi Sunshine! Enjoy that pea soup! Glad you are using your hambone from Christmas - I'll bet it turns out delicious! The Farberware stainless cookware is hands down my favorite and I use it daily. There were a number of theatres that used to give out dishes on certain nights to get people to come to the movies. When TV started getting popular in the early 50's attendance went down at theatres so they had different promotions to get people to come. St. Bonaventure is the Capucian church with the soup kitchen in Detroit. They are still doing their good work! Thanks!

I made a pot of soup this morning...have had these split peas for about a month. I used a couple Bay Leaves, Rosemary, and Thyme to mine....cooked it in Chicken Broth...my goodness. I can't stop eating it. Just had a craving after I watched many video's. I did soak my Split Peas overnight. Gonna make some homemade croutons to add to the top. I don't think this soup will last long. Wonderful, and it's summertime here in Florida. I'm an All Season Soup Girl. My first time ever eating Split Peas, and I'm 65 years old. Boy have I missed out.

Kevin and Ralph-Hello my sweethearts! I want a bowl of that soup so bad! Never in my life have I tasted split pea soup and never have I even seen it down here in Georgia-but I know I will like it! I am definitely going to make a pot of this soup for my family! What kind of bread did you all eat with this soup? And, Kevin, my Mother always called it, "Looking your beans/peas" when searching for those little pebbles in dried beans/peas. LOL. Just a little southern something to share with you. Kevin, when you asked Ralph, "What more could you ask for?" I said aloud, "A bowl of that soup!" Lordy mercy, I am so hungry right now! Kevin, you make anything look so good when you eat it at the end of the videos! I so love you guys. Tell Ralph that he has such a soothing voice-it is just comforting to hear it. So, tell me, how did you two meet and how long have you been friends? And Kevin, have you had any formal culinary training? You use a knife so skillfully and cook so well-I am curious to know. Thanks for this great video, guys! I bet Mary Ann has a ball with you two! Blessings! :-)

Hello Princess! Sorry we couldn't serve you up a bowl of this soup, I know you would like it! It may not be as popular in your part of the country. We like to eat rye bread with this soup (with lots of butter, of course!) but any hearty crusty bread will do fine. I love the "looking your beans" saying!! It sounds like a very southern expression! I learned how to cook from my mom, mostly. And I cooked many church dinners with my family over the years where I would cook for a couple hundred people at a time. I don't have any special training, but spent a lot of time watching and learning from others who knew their stuff in the kitchen. We have a lot of fun cooking - and love sharing with you! Thanks so much! Stay well and stay strong!

First time viewer here. Oh my gosh, my mother had that colander all of my 61 years of life! She passed away at 86 in 2020, I miss her so much. Her father made The Best ham & split pea soup, his had the final consistency as yours, which is perfect! Unfortunately, idk or just don't remember how he made it. I've been craving for some time now and am looking at recipes. Our temps here in the south are going to drop quickly to a low of 39 and high 49 in the next couple of days (today was 88), so I'm definitely making it. We had a very very hot dry long summer into Oct. so I welcome this chill! Thanks for a great video.

Split peas and lentils do NOT require soaking and are generally very soft after 40 minutes of simmering. Whole peas - and they are out there - will take about 60-75 minutes to become soft. If you do not have a ham bone, the BEST option is to use smoked pork neck bones which are generally found at any supermarket in Michigan and are fairly cheap. They will give you a lot more meat than using the pork hocks.
@cavalcadeoffood
@cavalcadeoffood 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, jlawrence01. I've only seen dried whole peas once before, and would like to try them. I've seen the pork neck bones in the stores, although not smoked. I use them when making kapusta and sometimes pasta sauce. Will have to keep an eye out for the smoked variety. Thanks for watching!

Thanks guys, well done! I used a Red onion, whata ya think? Also, I just add a smoked Ham shank to the simmering broth of peas and veggies and let'er go, stirring frequently, adding a few spices along the way. My girlfriend can hardly wait for it to be done. And I always make a double batch, 2 lbs of peas and it doesn't stay around long!. Vegetarian note: Mushroom broth works totally well and add a little coriander and dash or nutmeg, but just a dash to about 2 quarts +. Comes out very wonderful and no meat at all! I always add a little butter and/or cream to mine at the end, but of course, I'm an omnivore devil. I serve mine with heated or toasted, buttered, French sourdough bread and a glass of chilled, good quality Sauvignon Blanc. My friends all line up with their tails wagging and tongues licking, lol.

I fell asleep watching this but woke up at the end. Looks good! Last thing I remember was ham bone. What’s that got to do with split pea soup?

You don't cook out the seasonings if you put them in while cooking. The issue is if you flavor it to taste when you have a few quarts of water, then when it evaporates you will have way too much seasoning. You do want to season it before if you want the salt to penetrate though. Salt can make beans tough when u cook them though so only salt lightly when cooking other beans. Split peas cook down to nothing though so it's not a big deal :)

First time I have come across your cooking show. I usually use bacon bones instead of a ham bone. To shorten the cooking time I soak the split peas overnight, and rinse before cooking. I start with the bones covered with water in the pot and add a roughly chopped onion. Nothing else, no salt etc. Plenty of salt from the bones. As I usually use a pressure cooker, I cook the bones for about 10 minutes before adding the split peas. Then I put under pressure again, time depends on whether the peas have been soaked or not. And that is it. No other vegetables etc. Sometimes I will remove the bones and strip as much meat off them as I can then return the meat to the rest of the soup. But there is nothing nicer that chewing the meat off the bones. It was strange when I first heard of people adding vegetables including potatoes. And I personally prefer the yellow split peas for some reason. Didn't matter to the rest of the family.

Hi Jan - thanks for sharing your version - it sounds delicious! I'll bet those bacon bones give it a great flavor! I don't see the yellow split peas very often. I'll pick some up the next time I see them. Thanks!

Hi Longhairbear - well, I wouldn't want it that hot, but it sure would be nice to have it in the 50's for early May. Spring will arrive in Michigan as it usually does - when it's good and ready! Thanks for watching!

9:03 If you can taste the celery in any dish, you've used too much. It has a tendency to overpower all other flavors.

Last time and only time I made split pea soup. I accidentally chopped the tip of my middle finger off. Now when giving my husband the middle finger I go south paw. Just to piss him off more cause he knows I am right handed and he has to now follow my hands. I’m Jewish and Italian and talk with my hands so he likes to watch me to make fun of me and a south paw finger confuses the hell out of him so naturally I have to use it to piss him off and annoy the hell out of him! Canebe married 45 years and not know how to piss your spouse off. It’s a favorite pass time of mine anyway! Keeps me amused thinking of ways to annoy the hell out of him!
