My Split pea soup is thick. I learned from my mother. It started with a smoked ham hock. The ham was simmered first then she used the water from the ham to cook her split peas. When the split peas were almost done she added onion, carrots, turnip and potatoes.

Happy New Year🥂, Natasha! You started the new year off with something truly comforting, which is a split pea soup! It's truly loaded with lots of fresh vegetables and potatoes. Wow, I can tell you use potatoes frequently! I am genuinely intuitive that you are never not a great chef! Surprising impressive how you are willing to sustain your cooking strengths throughout so many years! By the way, this reminds me of the lentil soup I had in Costa Rica! 🇨🇷 They surely both taste good and comforting! Anyways Natasha, looking forward to more of your delicious recipes this year! They are always great!

This soup is delicious. I made it yesterday. I used a ham hock. I also liked using the yellow split peas. They were sweeter. I also liked adding the carrots and garlic at the end. The only thing I will change is adding potatoes, but that is a personal preference. Make this soup you will love it.

Happy New Year to you & your family. I am from Newfoundland & Labrador. Yellow pea soup is a staple here although I cannot seem to get it like my Mom used to make. We enjoy the soup thick so our practice calls for soaking the peas over night then cook as per usual. Like turkey, it is a meal that transitions to leftovers well so it can be enjoyed for a few days. While ham is really common, we use salt beef (not corned beef). The salt beef is a common side with turkey or chicken dinners as well. The flavour is awesome. Thanks for all your tips.

I made this soup this week. It was delicious and very filling. I am not a fan of green split pea soup. It has a flavor I don't care for. This soup didn't have that taste. The yellow split peas I found in the grocery store were grown in Ukraine. That gave it an extra good flavor. I thank you and your mom for the recipe.

Hi Natasha what a great video! Bean soups of various kinds have been in my family forever; Serbian Pasoujl the way my Dad made it (secret recipe lol) German lentil soup but this one is in my heart; my best friend was from Quebec City and his recipe is so much like yours it's brilliant. On a weekend he'd gather up stuff and make his own stock and ham hock yes and it sort of took all day but we were hanging out so it was totally worth it and and a huge vat he could freeze or have people over, he made his own bread, heaven .... wonderful memories tx so much am making it today!!! (including the stock, so easy to freeze and just keep the heat on low). I can do Irish soda bread don't really need it if you include the potatoes so all good. Love your channel!

We like to add alot more onion and other vegetables, following my Oma's recipe. Knorr make ham stock cubes and we use acouple along with chicken stock. This soup freezes well, so making a large batch up front will save alot of time and energy costs later, for quick weeknight meals. We make the soup in our instant pot with out the potatoes 15 minutes on high and 15 minute natrual release, fish out any hard herbs, we then hit saute and add the potatoes, cook till fork tender. Saves alot of time and energy. Serve what you need and freeze the rest in deli containers. You can use ziploc bags to freeze your soups, just fill to your desired portion size, do not sqeeze all the air out from the bag, leave some head space, remember the soup will expand abit as it freezes, so apply common sense, carefully seal, label and lay flat on a tray put it in the freezer. Once frozen remove for the tray and stack upright in the freezer. The reason i mention the ziploc bag method is that they will defrost quicker than the large block in a deli container and they are space saving. Depending on your tastes you can add some chilli flakes prior to pressure cooking or add chilli oil when you serve, we like to use our DIY chilli oil/crisp as it adds more that just weak flavour and some heat from chilli flakes. Thank you for the recipe, take care, God bless one and all.
