You gave me a big smile!! I did this as a child (8 years old to be exact), many years ago. I made grape jelly the first time, and I was SO proud of myself, and I'll never forget the smile on my Mom's face!

Used to do this years ago with my Mum (and myself later on) and she put a piece of string so it hung out of both sides of the jar in between the layers of wax. Tucked the ends over the second layer before she put the cloth over. Def going to try this again as it brings back some good memories.

Great looking jam. Haven’t seen the wax method used since Grandma. Always good to be reminded of the old ways.

Great! I’ve always wondered about the wax. I love that it’s reusable!

Yes, when I was little, (I'm 59) my Mother would always use paraffin wax to seal jams. As I got older, she switched to water bath canning-only my Mother water-bath-canned EVERYTHING--even the stuff that needed to be pressure canned!! Of course I didn't realize that error until many years later when I started to can myself. We all lived...

Hey Modern Refugee. DRUMMER here. Had to change my moniker and stay low for a while due to some online harassment I was experiencing on KZbin. Apparently, there are some Karen's out there that find it offensive when someone else says "God bless." Just wanted to let you know that I haven't disappeared. Just changed my name. God bless you, Modern Refugee, for taking the time to show us these skills.

I never use pectin anymore. I have some old paraffin I may try using this season as I need to ship some jam, so hopefully that'll work. Nice vid. Thank you.

Our strawberries are not going to be ready for about a month. Yesterday, I bought a quart of them, but had to pay $1.99 on sale...ouch. I will keep my eyes open for more at a better price. I make jams every year, but never used your method. I do have the wax tho so will give it a try. Thanks!

MR, Making a batch of strawberry preserves. Going to do some by your paraffin wax method to try it out. My question is do you wait for the jam to cool at all before pouring the paraffin? Does it matter? Thank you for responding. You are such a generous soul to give your time to help others. P.S. I've tried to spread the word about your channel. Seems there is a limited number of people interested in simplifying their lives and working towards more self-sufficiency. Went to my local discount store yesterday. Owner told me she is now seeing customers coming in driving 100k cars. I guess some are waking from slumber. I sure hope so. Pax!

Is there a reason you put the wax on in two layers instead of one? My grandparents on both sides canned with wax, but that was long before I was around, and unfortunately I never got to learn from them. Thanks for passing on your knowledge. You are very helpful!

My grandmother during the great depression sealed her jam with bees wax from their own bees not paraffin wax. Not sure what the difference would be.

@ModernRefugee2 жыл бұрын
Only after removing the wax
@drdoan99311 ай бұрын
good stuff! seems to me like the science & technique ought to apply to anything in the jar that's covered with liquid---not just jams & jellies??
@ModernRefugee11 ай бұрын
I’ve only ever seen it with jams and jellies. They are more resistant to spoilage because of the high sugar content. Then when combined with the seal (lack of oxygen) the paraffin provides, it’s a good combination.
@steff6682 Жыл бұрын
How do you eat it and seal it up again?
@ModernRefugee Жыл бұрын
The paraffin make the seal to store it. To use you would remove the paraffin then use the lid and ring to close it back up then store it in the refrigerator.

How do you remove the wax out of the jar when you're ready to eat it?
@ModernRefugeeАй бұрын
You can take a butter knife and break the disc of paraffin in half and lift it out. If any remains it will be visible and can be removed with a spoon. This is how the Old Timers did it.

@That.Lady.withtheYarn2 жыл бұрын
@@ModernRefugee Can't it be made by boiling it down? I'm trying not to use to my sugar.
@ModernRefugee2 жыл бұрын
@@That.Lady.withtheYarn yes you can boil any fruit down. The thing with the sugar is with the pectin you need the sugar for a proper set. Sugar is also naturally antibacterial. That’s why you never see anything growing on pure sugar and that why including flavor sugar is used in many types of pickles and preserves.
