Describes the initial process of making 1 gallon of strawberry mead (melamel).
Note: I am not a professional winemaker. I hold no responsibility if the results of your winemaking causes injury or ill health. This is as natural (where possible) winemaking channel. The wines made on this channel do not use sulfites. You may use them and\or yeast nutrients and or energizers if that is how you prefer to make your wine\mead.. This channel uses pasteurization.
Ingredients:
3 - 5 pounds Strawberries
3 pounds Raw Honey
10 cups Water
1/2 teaspoon Wine Yeast (I'm using Red Star Premiere Classique)
During the first 3 days give your musk a good stir, and to break up the fruit cap that will form if you are not using straining bags. After 5-7 days Rack into secondary, and continue to rack every 4-6 weeks until clear. Degas, back sweeten, bottle let age for at least 12 months total.

I love how real mead makers are on KZbin. I watched one mess up weighing the honey before this video. This video shows stems left on. Totally things I would do!

i honestly am still processing that opening shot, you get used to the low sub count mead videos having understandable low quality production but not this legend; decent shot framing, great lighting, welcoming smile and GOOD LORD! If you had a prop department and/or director i'd commend them for that bowl x'D they're damn shiny, that "prop bowl of fruit" is an eye catcher these are rather pedantic observations to the layman but i assure you the production quality of that opening shot is a straight 9/10.

Just FYI if you want a serious strawberry flavor, stabilize, add more strawberries in secondary, remove, then backsweeten. As with any delicate and sweet fruit, secondary additions and honey to bring out the flavor and balance the tartness of a dry strawberry mead is a great idea.
@DIYFermentation

Although this channel does not use stabilizers, and the addition of fruit in secondary is a step beyond the level of wine/mead making set out for this channel. I welcome advice for those that are ready to advance beyond the channel.

The way you hydrate your yeast in this episode is the way I'm going to do it from now on. After you mix it and take your hydrometer reading. Yes, you have to wait a little bit at the end, but I think this would work best for me overall.

Looks tasty. You can use a toothpick instead of a straw with the funnel. You just need to create a gap so air can escape.

I just found your channel and it has inspired me to try to make some wine, how long do you allow your wine to stay in your primary fermentation vessel? Keep up the good work!!
@DIYFermentation
@DIYFermentation 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and I will generally let primary go for 5 - 7 days before racking it into the secondary with subsequent racking every 4 - 6 weeks until the wine is clear.

I love your video but as a beekeeper I have to point out that the USDA doesn't grade Honey. It's usually a sigh that it came from China or is just corn syrup.
@DIYFermentation
@DIYFermentation 2 жыл бұрын
True, the "Grade A" is probably pure marketing, and the only way to know for sure is to obtain the honey from an apiculturist.

Thank you for your wonderful video! I started a strawberry mead just the other day. I have a question though; how would you describe the smell of the strawberry mead fermenting? Mine smells rather.... strong? Definitely have a lot of activity, but the smell isn't really pleasant. Almost like a yeasty, sour-strawberry. Does that sound normal to you?
@DIYFermentation
@DIYFermentation 3 жыл бұрын
Well, when I made my first strawberry wine, the smell was very strong well into the second racking. I refused to even taste it. There was no smell when making the strawberry mead. I believe the smell may be due to the yeast being somewhat stressed, either by temperature being too high, or lack of yeast nutrient. In any event the smell does go away over time.
@truffleman12

@@DIYFermentation Thank you for responding! I think it might be the temp. It's been pretty warm around here for awhile.
