My Workshop had a terrible echo, in this video were fixing that with these super-effective sound-absorbing sound panels. They are easy to make, work really well and are way cheaper than the professional-grade ones.

FYI: If you mount them dropped them a couple of inches to leave an air gap, they become even more effective at sound dampening for no extra cost. It lets sounds pass through the panel, bounce off the ceiling and be absorbed again as it passes back. It also lets more reflection angles be absorbed (picture the game Breakout, when you get the ball stuck on the top level of bricks)
@omarkorayem6611
@omarkorayem6611 4 жыл бұрын
Dropping them also provides the benefit of a shadow gap. When they're pressed up against the ceiling any imperfection in either the ceiling or what your attaching (in this case the ceiling) would be very visible by leaving a small gap (usually 6mm or so) the fit of the two things together will seem cleaner and neater.

Yes it somthing like an air gap the same size as the thickness of the panel give you double the absorption at its most absorbing frequency.
@ssc00p
@ssc00p 4 жыл бұрын
Dropping the panel acts as a thicker panel, like you said "become even more effective"... which also means that the panel is able dampen slightly lower frequencies/longer wave length sounds too..

How are they holding up a year later? - are they sagging? -Was white the correct colour for a workshop? (I agree they would make the room look smaller and darker. Installing lighting floor to ceiling near the walls can make a room look larger if needed). -Was the thin cover material you used ideal? (I have only ever seen them with a thicker weave breathable material) Sounds much better... great video.

Nice panels! I made similar panels using colored felt for the fronts and ceiling tile material for the internal portion (its NRC of .55 means it absorbs 55% of sound hitting from front and 55% from sound that gets through and bounces back off the wall). You can also double the ceiling tiles inside the frame with an air gap between them. A random orbit sander would easily take the edge of mdf if you don't have a router with a roundover bit.

Wonderful and informative video mate! Instead of rockwool, it's safer and less expensive to use layers of (clean and worn) towels which absorb 5 times more sound. You can even spend the spared out cash on a custom printed cloth so it looks like a picture frame. Acoustic properties were tried and tested!

Low frequencies will vibrate these panels since they are not totally flush with the ceiling. A better mounting solution would be to use hooks to hang them, with the added air gap providing more acoustic dampening benefits.

I'd be really interested to hear a before/after of only 25% and 50% of these panels installed. On other videos I've seen people install fewer sound-absorbing panels with pretty good effects. Sound reverberates a lot, it appeared that the sound will bounce around and get trapped by fewer panels eventually. ps: Awesome edit and congrats on teaching some wood-working techniques on the way. Thanks!

Roofing batten is a very cheap material and is already 25x50mm which is perfect and saves cutting on a table saw. I like the mounting method here. As others have mentioned leaving an air gap will make the panels more effective.

Huge improvement! Reasonable compromise in the space to hang them flush. I'm sure making videos for KZbin prompted this but I wish more restraunts and workshops did this. You're right it changes the "feel" of a place. I still hear a distinct high(er) frequency ring which you could tame. Not sure if the difference is worthwhile given the mixed use of the space, just friendly feedback.

I just ordered my first 3d printer and although I had ideas of things I could make with it, your videos (expecially the $10K camera support) openned my eyes to what can be done not only by 3d printing but combining that with other materials. This turned out great. I'm going to keep this in mind for when I can get a space to call my own. Thank you for the thorough walk through! I wonder how these stack up in rooms like home media/theaters. They are extremely cost effective for such a dramatic change in that space. In a room like yours, I would probably add a spacer to the lights to drip them slightly below the new ceiling level, just to bring the white back on the panels.

When doing that many or more panels I highly recommend a better stapler! A Rapid R23 is what we use in the event industry for graphic wraps with some conferences etc meaning I'm stapling all day long at about 2 or 3 per second at the beginning of the day - its many times easier to use compared to so many other , stiff and narrow-handled other models (that give you blisters and bruised palms). The plastic R13 is even better for comfort (but doesn't have as long a life). There may be other good ones, but I've not yet found them (and as a slight contrarian, I have tried hard to find something different to the industry standard.... settling on a vintage Rev C of the R23 as the best).

I know you did this almost a year ago, and i really like the panels you did with the french cleat system, very clever and looks super nice! As some others have pointed out, if you drop the panels just 5 cm / 2 inches, it will trap the sounds even better, and also. it looked like you were using 70 mm (3 inches) rockwool isolation. You could have used 45mm (2 inches) since they have the same sound insulation capabilities. not a lot of money saved, but it's still money saved.

Drilling holes on the side of the frame would make your absorb box even more efficient. On another note: rockwool particles can be hazardous for your lungs, eyes and skin. I would recommend sealing the rockwool with plastic film to keep the particles in. Other than that, they look classy and the mounting technique is smart.
@berkertaskiran
@berkertaskiran 7 күн бұрын
Won't plastic film cause reverb? It's not breathable so it must be. So what's the point of using rockwool? I do agree it can be dangerous, but I wonder if there's a way to fix this without ruining absorption properties? If not, then we shouldn't even be using this material. Though I guess we should also consider if this fabric will really allow anything to go through. Or if you used a thicker fabric or two layers of it. Still though, this is about health so one must be extra careful. I would be interested to see some tests made about this.
