I love what you and your friends are doing for local children. I am going to be "That Guy": Why not buy all the bikes, helmets and other gear from local bike shops? Why not buy ten bikes from five stores? Same with the safety gear? Instead of making a bunch of local businesses have a more profitable holiday season which means local people have more job security, you enriched the Walton family and we all know damn well not a penny of your spend goes to any of the employees. I'm quite positive that local bike shops could price match based on volume. A bike shop may have also been able to reach out to their suppliers and get you donations of safety gear. Yes, I admit to having a fundamental problem with purchasing anything from Walmart or Sam's given what they and our politicians, who gave them tax breaks (local in the form of property tax waivers and federal in many forms) did to local businesses. Bike shops are some of the last independent businesses that have not been taken over by conglomerate chain stores or venture capital scams. And if you don't think that is real check out who owns your eye doctor, you might not like what you find out, as one example. Heck housing and rental prices are 100% being driven by venture capital trying to steal more and more money from all of us. So while you all did a great thing helping children its offset by not helping adults. You guys could have done both.....

I knew this comment was coming, and the answer is very simple…. Because none of that shit matters here. The one and only goal here is to help as many kids as possible, and the simple fact is that we can get more bikes for the same amount of money at Walmart than we could anywhere else, and that’s all we care about. This town is stuffed FULL of bike shops. Like, a ridiculous amount of them, and they’re more than welcome to pitch in if they want.

Having shopped in bike shops, they typically charge a premium price for everything. Not the most affordable or economical idea.

It might not be relevant in the short run, but you are contributing to one of the rootcauses of the problem you are trying to combat. But hey it certainly feels better to say "we saved 100 kids from the evil child shredding machine" instead of questioning why a evil child shredding machine exists. Yes thats hyperbole... Doesnt change it though.

Parents: instead of training wheels, take the pedals off and set the seat low enough for the child to put both feet flat on the floor. Let them scoot around, and steadily raise the saddle until they are on tippy toes. You can teach a child to actually ride a bike in an afternoon. Once they are happy scooting along with feet up, put the pedals back on.

23 years as a professional firefighter/EMS first responder and my favorite time of the year was when we would set up a donation box at the fire station, then as a department do roof sits at Tim Horton Coffee shop and bakery, take donations in the form of unwrapped toys and gifts and monetary cash, turn around and buy needed items and turn it all over to the Marine Corp League Toys-for-Tots drive. Even helped wrap quite a few of the gifts a couple of years, then we were invited to help hand out the wrapped presents to young kids throughout our community. Also was a fun time when we got invited to Shop with a Cop (remanded Shop with a Hero) events, the joy and excitement the kids had was infectious. What your group is doing for the community is outstanding and admirable to say the least. Love what you do, keep up the great work no matter what it is you are doing!

The GIVING PLATE is an amazing program in Central Oregon! I shop the sales at local grocery stores weekly and drop them off at their food pantry 1-2 times a month. The line of cars is always out their driveway space and the homeless are often stuffing their backpacks/bags with food at the doorway. The volunteers are kind and serve these people with smiles on their faces! (: I know this event the bikes are going to is HUGE, and typically there will be a video at their website showing the smiles on the kids faces, when they receive their gift! THANK YOU, all, for making this happen!!!!! Mrs G

Boy do I remember when I worked for Sears/roebuck in loading/shipping and we had a full 40 foot trailer load of bikes to put together for salvation army bike drive. This was in my last Xmas before I got drafted with reporting date of Jan 7, 1968 . We had bike crew of 17 on overtime plus donated time to reload and deliver via convoy of Sears service trucks to salvation army warehouse. Line for the bikes wrapped around the old US Army main garage (whole city block) with kids. Holding their Sears coupons. Whole garage looked like a sea of colors with all the bikes standing there. Was so good to see you and group doing same. Thanks for what you doing and bringing back my memories long forgotten P

Last year I took a very part-time job building bikes for WalMart stores in our area. THAT IS A LOT OF WORK!! The company that WalMart hires to assemble the bikes you see in the store has special stands that allow the builder to hang the bike in the air so to speak and assemble it without having to spend the whole day crouching around the frame on the floor.

Great idea with all the bikes Casey. A suggestion. For all the bikes with training wheels, give the parents a sheet that tells them how to work with their children when they are ready to remove the training wheels. There are two methods that can be used. The first that everyone knows is to hold the seat of the bike as the kids ride. The seat is conveniently located a little below the parents knees, and if they do a great job they can keep the bike moving while the kid learns. Unfortunately, there is no way to make sure the kid is in a good balanced location on the bike. The better method is to put the child's backpack on them and put a rope between the shoulders straps in front of the child so that they cannot slide out of the backpack. Most backpacks have a loop to hang the backpack up. Either hold on to the loop or put a short piece of rope threaded through the loop to hold. Now the parent can stand up and concentrate on keeping the child in a balance position on the bike. Last tip: don't push the child into removing the training wheels until they say they are ready.

To be honest for that kind of order you should probably make the order online and get it delivered to the store you want usually only take 3 days or so and you could ask what sizes and ages from the people. But thanks for what you are doing it is good to see there is a little good left in this world, starting to think we should force evil people to have to do good things for people instead of just trying to put them in Jail and stuff sometimes they need to be shown that it makes you feel better being a good person then a bad person!
