Dad fed 30 to 40 head of feeder cattle every year from the early 1950's to 1972. As I got older, say 10-12 yrs old to high school age my job was scooping ear corn into a small elevator to grind in a Knoedler burr mill run by a FARMALL M, ground about 50 bushel a week plus fed the cattle 5-6 bales of alfalfa hay. As the years progressed Dad built up a pretty good business selling beef on the hoof for people to custom butcher. That corn fed beef tastes WAY better than anything you can buy in a grocery store or butcher shop. And MAN I miss it! Growing up it was all I was used to! We picked 80 acres of ear corn and all of it was ground for the cattle. We raised 500 to 800 head of hogs farrow to finish with all purchased hog feed. We never butchered a hog. The 160 acre farm wouldn't begin to raise enough corn to feed all the hogs. Dad and a neighbor farmed another 80 on a 50-25-25 basis, 50% to the owner and Dad and the neighbor split the rest. For the time and capital invested it was very profitable. My Brother-in-law still farms, must be close to 500-600 acres. He used to raise about 600 hogs a year but quit about 10 years ago. He feeds about 4-5 cattle to have butchered.

I do love the sound those old JD 2 cylinder engines make when they're working. Nothing else sounds the same.

Dad looked like he was having fun doing something different. Raising your own food is a great thing to know. Especially the way the world is today. I raise chickens for eggs and meat and plant about two acres in garden. Teaching my grandkids everything I can.

i used to grind feed for dairy cows with almost the same outfit. we had a Gehl grinder mixer and I still have the 620. It has been right here on this farm since it was new. it is a 1957. the sound in your video brings back fond memories!

I ground ear corn and oats for our dairy herd with a Farmhand 810 grinder mixer. Also ground a lot of shelled corn for our hogs. Used a JD 620 and later a JD 2520 on the mill. The good thing about not overpowering the mill is we never had a problem with the mill as long as we had it. It was a little slower than the guys with bigger tractors, but as I said, we never had mill problems. I loved the sound of the JD 620 on the mill. As you said, the sound of a two cylinder is hard to beat.

Not sure if you have any in your mix, but Dad always had Molasses added to his recipe. Smells so good, I wanted to have some when I was little. The cattle would climb over each other to get to it. 🐂🐄👍🇺🇲🚜

I've been looking forward to this video Brandon. It's great to see the mill you salvaged from the scrap man and the old gal two lunger (not too big, not to small - just right 😊) running the whole shebang. It was a real thrill to hear you wind her up. The grinder may be one of your best purchases ever Brandon. She runs like a champ. Yes the 620 got a workout - but that's what she was built to do. I respect you for putting the right tractor on the job. The simple choice is overpower - but not the right choice. Thanks for showing us your steers. Are you still thinking about fencing your woodlot so they can free range graze? All the best my man!

We always put 2 of our best bales of alfalfa in the mix to scrub the rumen a bit. Just break a bale and put in one sheaf at a time.

I love grinding feed too. I always switched out using Oliver 88 or John Deere G on the Gehl 100 feed mill. I loved hearing the vintage equipment work even if it takes a little longer. Still, the work got done. Your 620 sounds great.

Great video!! The 620 and international mixer were great to watch and listen to together!! Really enjoyed watching this and hope to see more. Gorgeous looking cows!! I’d have named them T-Bone and Sirloin🤣🤣🤣! You forgot to mention you’ll be getting fertilizer too. May not be a lot but every bit helps.

We feed ground ear corn to our cattle. My kids 4-H calves have won rate of gain at the county level many times feeding ground ear corn. We have a recipe and it’s the same we feed to all our growers.

Great job on the ADG competitions! I thought I was the tops with a 4.25 ADG, but 1 of my daughters beat it with a 4.39 ADG. I put Rumensin in the feed for my kids cattle, didn't have it when I was in 4H. Y'all keep at it, it's efficientcy that means profit.

Love the 620! I worked on a big farm back in the early 70's and we made 3 ton of feed about every third day! Didn't matter if you had a few thousand bales of hay to put in and 120 head to milk! We used a Farmall Super MTA & Gehl mixer grinder! Is that a 53 60 with a loader?
