Making the Best DIY Wheel Cribs!

I've made a set of 8 of these. Essentially 1/2 the height of yours. This way I jack the car and place 4 under the tires, then jack it up a second time and place the remaining four. Much safer to jack a car up in two stages.

Making these cribs too tall to begin with is a mistake. Cars are really out of balance when you jack them to the limit of a 3 ton hydraulic jack. Also the cross brace in the middle between the top two layers is not needed as its not supported all the way down. Also, I must tell you that the wooden block on top of the jack support is a STUPID IDEA. Thats just dangerous.

@@ben68442 Agree. I will make mine soon. One thing that I notice on all these cribs, is that maker only consider the width and depth of the wheels. The size of the cribs should always governs by hight and the weight of the car and its stability at the such hight. Even if a less of work area will be available, I will put the cribs long side perpendicular to the length of the car. The cribs maybe strong for the weight but not necessarily stable for lateral or sudden sideway forces such as earthquakes

I made a set for my truck maybe 5-6 years ago. I absolutely love them and still have them to this day. I use them all the time for everything. Small work bench, jackstands, motorcycle kickstand, lawnmower repairs, engine teardown stand, plus they make a pretty good seat in a pinch lol. One thing I made for mine also is a set of ramps about 3 foot long so I dont have to jack up the truck/car to put them on. I used them last week to put a transmission in a jeep Cherokee and of course it wouldn't drive so I did have to jack it up. But the removable ramps do make it nice for when the vehicle does drive lol

Hi. Always interesting to watch others DIY designs. I have a suggestion adding some security to your design. Put 3 new pieces of the short ones, and put them in the same direction as the short one you already have in the middle, so you have wood support the whole way to the floor under the middle part of the crib/stand where you have the load. Safety first - keep up the good work!

That was my main question or suggestion to every video on wheel cribs. Don't know why everyone skips that extra measure of safety? I was leary of building these without center support. Reason being, 2x4s lying flat are not as strong as standing up lengthwise. The center support just seems obvious to me.

@@PTucker0864 Same thing i was thinking I'm for sure going to put a center support to the ground in mine why not it adds safety plus i no longer have a garage so i went from the nice floors to a carport outside in gravel and dirt lmao they give a little more peace of mind to get further under my trans am for more than a oil change lol

Brilliant. I'm half way through making some for my Land Cruiser. Don't be afraid of the weight. Wood weight compression is amazing. 1 metre long timber post can carry a maximum compression load of nearly 9 tons. 2 metres is about 5 tons. Your cribs can take a lot of weight. Well done and what a beautiful classic you have.

Instead of screws, could the crib be held together using four 1/2" carriage bolts...one on each corner? That way, you could easily add or remove a layer if you need more or less height.

possibly. One long carriage bolt in each corner...I am not fond of the idea that each layer wouldn't be secured to the next layer though

It's unsafe, better to make 8 of these at 1/2 the height of his and jack the car up in two stages. 1st four then the second four. Hope this helps

@@eaglerider94 I wound up doing two sets per tire (each at 9 inches for a total of 18 inches). However, mine are twice as wide as his. They are pretty awesome and solid. I have complete continuity from the tire to the ground with two vertical 4x4s on each crib that are centered below the tire. My setup is best with two floor jacks to get the car to the second tier. I made a custom cross member that attaches to both jacks to keep the jacks from shifting away from each other, too.

I recently built one just like yours but I'm still having that initial uneasiness getting under the car. Car sits like yours I'm also shoring it up as backup with jack stand. I'm still not comfortable. How did you get over that? Thanks.

To help you feel more comfortable about how much weight wood can support, look at a tree. Notice how much tree there is above the bottom part of the tree and the bottom part of the tree supports it. The wood won't squish or melt or evaporate or dissolve.

I found a guy that makes furniture. He saved all the 16 inch 2x4 leftovers and put em on a pallet. 30 bucks for the pallet. Score.

@@IamPaste I bought the 12" ones and they are awesome. So far I used them to changed my exhaust as well as to change the engine oil and differential fluid. Much safer than jack stands.

@@matt-ts8cx What I really need it for is putting load on the suspension when I torque everything down. I've been doing work on suspension for years and been having trouble getting everything tightened down correctly by just hacking up a control arm.

Thanks I appreciate it. I think the main negatives are… cast so they will dent easy, not very light, I wish I could see the brakes better lol. ie thinner spokes. But for the price I am very happy with them and love the look avgd style. They get lots of compliments .

Side to side stability certainly better than jack stands thanks to the wide base. Could probably go much higher before side to side stability would be treacherous. It would be easy to add a 2 x 4 outrigger brace to each unit if it makes you feel better.
