That is wonderful. I can assure you that Alan Simpson is every bit the kind, and generous, gentleman you think he is because I consider myself very fortunate to be able to call him a good friend. Whenever I finish the extension to my workshop you are going to hear a lot more about Alan. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Thanks Brendan. Alan is very generous, it was wonderful to receive this parcel of wood. I felt privileged to work on this ancient bog oak and the dating of it makes it even more interesting, I had to choose a blade that was worthy of it. Cheers, Jim.

Thank you so much Jim for a splendid object. The bog oak came from a tree a farmer pulled up with his mechanical excavator in 2011. My cousin alerted my to it and he was going to use it for firewood. I managed to wrestle ownership of it from him and sent a cross section off to the archaeology dept at our local university where they dated it as having commenced growth in 992 AD which is over 70 years before the Battle of Hastings. You've now got me interested in knife making. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the off cuts. Best wishes, Alan.
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
Thanks again Alan, the bog oak is amazing, I hope I have done it justice. Every man who makes, should build a knife at some point in their life, I am sure that it is something deep within us. It is great to make something that you can use afterwards and that looks good too. Thanks again, all the best, Jim.

Wonderful video. Have yet to make my first knife and this has been invaluable. Could you explain the reason for the red fiber please. Aesthetics only? Thank you.
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video. The red finer liners are mostly for aesthetic reasons only in this build but they are useful for creating a good bond between dissimilar materials, particularly wood and metal, although some may argue they are not needed. They hold a layer of epoxy against both surfaces. In the tests I have done on off cuts from the build process, I have found them to be very effective. Fibre liners generally have a more functional role in the building of full tang knives. I hope this helps. All the best Jim

Very enjoyable video sir, and beautiful knife! I enjoyed your explanation and commentary during the project. I have made a number of stick tangs myself and have never thought about using a syringe to squirt the glue deep into the tang hole. I found it interesting as well that the colour of the bog oak is so light. I have used some before that was quite a bit darker. Anyway great work and thanks for sharing!
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. I use syringes for lots of gluing projects, they save a lot of mess. Bog Oak is very variable, I think it depends on age and location, this lighter oak went well with the Blackwood. Cheers, Jim

Which steel did Mr. Strande use? (Might have missed that detail.) I like this knife a lot, also the sheath from the other video rocks. One detail: I think that the knife would be better for push cuts (e.g. making wood curls) with the ricasso reduced.
@JimsonMakes6 жыл бұрын
Thanks again. Sorry I can’t remember which steel it is, probably a high carbon tool steel but I know Mr Strande uses several different steels. I agree that the ricasso is too big. Cheers Jim

Hi Jim! I have just watched your vid and you have got lot of good points there for any knife making hobbiest. Anyone interested in to give first try for knife making gets good facts from this video. Thanks Osmo. I really value your opinion on my knife. I have been making knives for several years but I only found your channel last week !. I love your work, your knives are awesome, you are a very skilled craftsman. I am a big fan of Scandinavian blades. I remember now that Sandy mentioned his friend Osmo in one of his videos and I guess that is you. I put a link to your video in the description. Most of my videos are about Woodturning but I had requests from people to do a knife making video because I showed a few of my knives in an early video. It may be some time before I make the sheath, but I will post a video when I do. I also uploaded a video on how to make lanyard beads on the lathe this week. Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. All the best, Jim

Why is the blade not fully ground to the handle
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
I don't know, I didn't make the blade, it was how the knifesmith made it, I guess it is the style of the blade. If the edge was taken too near the handle it might make sharpening slightly more tricky due to the angled bolster. Cheers, Jim
