If anyone feels bad about using hot glue to make costumes should know that Jareth's sparkly blue coat in Labyrinth was constructed using hot glue (I have the description from the museum card as proof) and if it's good enough for Jim Henson and David Bowie, it's good enough for cosplay.

@@faynaglam The sigh of relief I breathed in MOPOP when I saw that on the description card made my husband laugh. Even he was like, "Listen, this is a professionally made costume and they used hot glue. Use the damn hot glue if it'll make it easier for you." I'm pretty sure it was to get all the sparkly bits tacked on, but even so, it worked! You couldn't tell it'd been hot glued by looking at it and I was pressed up again the glass trying to soak in every detail.

@victoriadiesattheend.8478 Жыл бұрын
Exactly!! honestly I realized how low key genius Rachel was when she made the black and white striped dress Katrina wears in the last scene of the Tim Burton classic "Sleepy Hollow". I remember thinking, this will be difficult. After all, this is a period dress, with panels. etc, and the challenge lies in using this striped fabric properly - sewing it in such a way that the pattern ALWAYS points in the proper direction and lays correctly. Then I saw her *PAINT THE STRIPES ON THE FABRIC.* it blew my little mind. I realized that if you're making a project casually, i.e., not being paid to create something exact for film or theatre, it doesn't really matter how you manage to achieve a certain look. As long as everything stays together and ON the garment, and its cohesive enough to be taken off and put on comfortably, and looks like you want it to, evokes what you want it to, you have succeeded. She did it again in this video. Don't have the time/know how to embroider a shit ton of pearls/beads/crystals? Use applique.....and silver puff paint!!!! You would never know the difference! Just awesome. I love that she makes me feel like I could make some of the stuff she makes. It doesn't appear to be so distantly difficult so that I don't even want to try. I love Rachel for that.💗

Ever After is SUCH an iconic movie and honestly one of the BEST Cinderella remakes ever. The heroine is actually interesting, outspoken, intelligent, and for once, has a believable reason for remaining in the shitty situation she's in (not only is the estate technically hers, but she has to worry about feeding and taking care of the servants who are like her family). The movie was iconic, the dress was iconic, Drew Barrymore was iconic, your remake turned out SO BEAUTIFUL, and now I have to watch this movie again soon.

I adore, ADORE this movie. Danielle is a smart/capable heroine character in a way that Hollywood often doesn't get right (not just because 'strong female character goes here to pander to the audience,' but because it suits her personality and how she was raised). Actually, Drew Barrymore has said that Danielle's spunk and determination affected what roles she wanted to play afterward.The creators paid great attention to the politics and dress of the period, the script is smart with some fantastic scenes and lines, and even the side/antagonist characters have levels of depth to them. Most romance movies in general just don't hold up to Ever After in my book.
@chrstina Жыл бұрын
I think the Drew Barrymore adaptation is iconic, but I also think there's also something to be said about the strength of the original Cinderella. Cinderella was created in a time when women didn't have the same rights we do today, stuck in an abusive household, mourning the loss of her father. All she wanted to do was go to the ball like her stepsisters and have a night away from it all; she didn't go because she wanted to marry a prince. She rebelled in the ways she could as a servant and managed to bring herself out from under her step mother and sister's cruelty.

The wrap up bit of holding up the dress has such "princess in real life" vibes and I adore it. As much as seeing a costume/gorgeously complex outfit *on* someone is a "wow" experience, seeing someone holding it, and it being a three dimentional object that isn't like, stage magic only is to me, an even more down to earth proof of intricate and beautiful things existing. I also didn't know about this film, and hence not about this dress, and whilst I'm usually a "less is more" when it comes to things, there's something infinitely compelling about the combination of details and colour scheme that gives me such a "crisp, ethereal, winter morning" vibe that I now want to see if I can imagine a white, ice blue, and silver grey dress with un-neccesary (by my usual sensibilities) amount of detail inspired by forests in sudden winter.

I am so happy and proud of that gown- I couldn't tell you how much i spent on fabric and notions but the sense of Accomplishment wearing that gown makes me so happy. I had a mental health day last week where I wore the dadgum thing just for gits and shiggles. This is looking awesome! I have one suggestion regarding the WORST part of cutting out the pattern pieces from the tissue paper. In order to preserve them and make sure you don't lose any pieces if you ever want to reuse the pattern, I would suggest tracing the patterns using a pounce wheel/wartenberg wheel onto butchers or grid pattern paper and leave it all intact in the original tissue paper. Then you have a replicated, sturdy version of the pattern cut out of butchers paper or grid pattern paper, and the original purchased pattern stays as the full sheets and you won't lose anything if you ever have to retrace that pattern, or a different version from that pattern bag.

HERE AGAIN!!! Once again Rachel has brought back a memory from the depths of my brain. I watched this movie when I was ten, and had completely forgotten about everything except that beautiful winged dress. Thank you Rachel, for ZE DRESS 🤌✨

The dress is so beautiful but my favorite thing was the joy in you while wearing it and talking about it. The hard work you put into the construction shows. If you end up wearing it to a cosplay convention please post people's reactions on your patreon or lnstagram. I would love to see that.

I used that same pattern to make my prom dress when I was 17! I’m old enough that I saw Ever After in the theater when it first came out and to this day is among my all time favorite movies. ❤

This has just completed my mum's bucket list She loves that movie (love almost every Cinderella movie there is but this is definitely her favorite) She would kill to have that dress And she's always wanted to try sewing, but never really got around to it now she can go all the way Gonna have to learn the basics to be able to do this one

"I'm overwhelmed, I'm intimidated, I'm anxious - Let's friggin' do this!" is now written in my affirmations journal. It fully encompasses all my feelings when starting a project. You are an inspiration to over-anxious, procrastinating perfectionists everywhere!

Rachel, I’m 71 years old and I got my first sewing machine when I was 8 years old. I have sewed continuously for all these years and i still lay everything out on the floor to cut out and sew on the details. Do it how it works for you, and don’t let anyone else tell you you are wrong. There are some rules for sewing, but for the most part you just have to jump in and try just as you are doing now. Every time I watch a new video I see you getting better and better.

I'm an even later latecomer to Ever After (as in I've wanted to watch it since I found out about it four-ish years ago but have not yet actually seen it) and yet that last shot of you in the dress with that really stark bright lighting brought me to tears!!! You did a really impressive thing and you should be proud!!!!

As a doll customizer, the whole process of having to keep ordering different fabric over weeks at a time until you get the right one is so relatable lol- I recently had to order three different types of lace, each with a 2-3 week shipping time just to get the perfect scale and color for an Ariel doll I'm working on and I couldn't work on any other parts of the dress until I had the right lace in-hand lol This looks amazing!! Ever After was a childhood favorite of mine so I'm always happy to see recreations of this dress!

I absolutely love to see you proud of your work. Not just because you worked hard and earned it but also because you are skilled and it looks genuinely amazing. It’s too easy for me to focus on everyone who does it better than me. So you being unashamedly proud of what you produced is inspiring.

Hand sewing appliques, embroidery and just one use of hot glue, amazing! I'm so proud! And I really like the every other Friday schedule, because we get bigger projects and a happier Rachel! "A perfectionist and chaotic whirlwind" is just the perfect description, I feel that in my soul!
