A couple of moss embroidery tips if anyone is interested: -wool thread works better because it has more texture and is easier to bulk up. Tapestry wool is quite thick, crewel wool is a but finer for embroidery. -for the turkey stitch (the one where you make a loop and then trim it) you can take a wire brush or even jut the tip of your needle and fray the ends of the cut thread and it will get really fuzzy and soft and gives great texture and contrast to just the knots -generally dont work with pieces of thread longer than you arm, that will help decrease the tangles and getting caught on things. Hope this is helpful 💗 obviously feel free to do whatever you want, there are no rules 😉

The length of thread Rachel was using made me feel so uncomfortable lol. And the tangle of floss! Eek! I might have become too rigid in my embroidery practice over the years.😂
@charischannah Жыл бұрын
I've also found that with Turkey stitch, if you space the stitches closely together, then trim, fluff, followed by trimming a little more closely, you get a nice velvety look, which is perfect for some kind of moss.

Also varying the number of strands can give a less uniform and more natural look (regular floss is usually 6 strand and personally I split in half to use 3 strands for most of my embroidery)

I really love the fact that rachel is totally honest about not loving the final product, but put it out there anyway. I’m such a perfectionist, especially about creative projects, and I’ve had to learn how to just say “good enough” to get anything done! I feel like it’s so important for us to love the process of making, even if we don’t always love what we end up creating. Then, it never feels like time/resources/money were wasted! I started making costumes when I was 12, waaaay back in 1973. Everything was from scrap and cobbled from thrift. There was no cosplay then. Then I danced in a ballet company and learned a little more about costuming . Fast forward to the 90s when my kids discovered video games, animae and cosplay. You thought I died and went to heaven. I had an excuse to make 6 foot dragonfly wings,battle mage/ monk, and superhero outfits. Alas, they were all for kiddos & teenagers. In my 60s now and I see folks making outfits that just make them happy- cuz. Just cuz. This makes my heart sing. Anyone who thinks they can’t make amazing clothing and costume pieces, that’s a lie. I love how the sleeves have a different texture, the whole thing kind of looks like its a patchwork made of different fallen leaves by fairies, and the sleeves are woven from skeleton leaves. Rachel, I understand if you don't like it, but I think this is absolutely phenomenal. Incredible work and it looks so natural! I love the piece as is, but if you wanted to address the issues you discussed, perhaps a quick dip in a very watered down green dye to tone the whole piece and bring the sleeves in a bit more? Your toning with the fabric paint worked SO WELL and perhaps an overall tone job would work as well. Green is SO difficult to get different shades that mix well because there are so many different undertones and shades to work with. I do a lot of floral embroidery, and getting complimentary greens for my pieces is the bane of my existence. Also if anything, to help with it looking wonky, you are a master of painting illusions onto cosplay pieces and the like, so I bet you could give it a bit of an illusion of being straight. I know I'm watching this 9 months late, but DAMN girl you really did that.

My mom taught embroidery at a catholic high school until three years ago. Also math, science and economics, but embroidery was a "you have to be productive if you want to be indoors during lunch break" option. From the year I could be trusted with scissors, I spent every summer helping her prepare stitch kits, and got to know the "math teacher at a catholic high school" side of her. (10/10, do not recommend) The trick to getting floss from a skein is to remember it's just a really weird center pull ball, not a bunch of loops. Look for the least obvious thread end, pull that, with the little paper sheaths kept on. Works a treat until the last two or so meters, when the tangle is more or less inevitable and you just unwind the entire thing instead of pulling. Trick to minimizing thread catching on limbs, furniture and your embroidery hoop is to work with lengths that are no longer than twice the length, from lower thumb joint to shoulder, of the arm you're stitching with. If you're sewing and no one is going to see that thread, just wax it to prevent tangles. Choose life. If anyone reading this needs to split embroidery floss, and it keeps tangling: you need 3 hands. Either get a small to medium sized child to hold the ends while you "milk" the part that isn't split yet, or clamp one of the split ends so you have a free hand to stroke the twist out of the un-split part. Also, if you're working with an even number of floss strands, and don't like weaving in ends: split your floss to half the strands you need, put both ends through the eye of your needle, then secure your thread to your fabric by incorporating a lark's head knot in your first stitch.

Tip to reduce tangling/leg looping problems: never work with a thread longer than your arm reach, that way there's not enough thread in play to get tangled easily. Working with longer lengths may seem faster, but you add so much de-tangling time! Thank you for being inspiring to this old lady!

I’ve been futzing around with embroidery lately as well and my suggestion to achieve what you were going for with the different shades of green is the even more time consuming process of dividing the embroidery thread and mixing different colored strands. I’m still early stage in my learning process but embroidery thread is typically 6-7 strands of thread combined, so if you make your own color blends you can achieve more “natural” blending. Definitely gives your pieces more dimension! Just something to keep in mind if you want to keep playing with it too!
@AnnekeOosterink Жыл бұрын
It also helps to not use all the strands. Especially if you're going for a natural look, but in general, 6 strands are pretty rare. You can thread several needles and then work in really small batches so the french knots blend the colours, pointillism style. That way you can use one or two strands to make the knots really small, and you can pull them really tight, that also helps with the realism. It does basically require the use of a needle minder, but unless you want a really specific cute one, that is solved with a couple of magnets.

I so admire you, Rachel! Thank you for showing the process, even when the end result wasn’t exactly what you’d hoped for... the internet is a better place with you in it! 😊💛

Quick Tip: I have found that when hand sewing/embroidery when you first prep your needle & thread if you don't cut your thread no longer than one full arm pull from your center mass you will have less tangles and less hooking onto random stuff/body parts. Hope this helps ☺️

Loved the whimsical work out at the start, was excellent. Seeing Rachel sit on the veranda on a swing seat in the rain was calming.

I grew up in North Carolina with a twin-bed sized porch swing, and you doing embroidery on the swing in the rain makes me YEARN!! My current porch isn’t deep enough to sit and enjoy the rain as we get spattered

This is exactly to my interests. I've been making (i.e sitting in my unfinished project box) a moss covered cape for years now. This video might just give me the inspo to actually finish it. Especially since one of your earlier videos was what gave me the idea in the first place.

That reveal was STUNNING! The paint on the bodice really gave it the vibe of wallpaper in an abandoned Victorian house imo

Would I be too much to ask for a full "Let's Get Whimsical" music video? Because that genuinely slapped! 😂❤

Know not a single thing about sewing or clothes-making but your videos make you feel like a close friend and I always love watching you on your adventures and gigglin' at your silly jokes. Another treasure in the books! Thank you for making content for us to enjoy so heartily.

I would love to make something like this when I get the chance. Most of all wanted to say that Rachel seems to be getting more and more beautiful as she does more of what she loves and just has fun. And love seeing more Frodo!!

The greatest thing you’ll ever learn, is to watch Rachel and be wowed in return! Very cool little project. I loved the concept and the Olivia’s Newton John nostalgia ❤

You can easily fix the corset by adding thicker straps and removing the sleeves, and doing more more moss coming down the shoulders. Love you to revisit this if you want to! Awesome idea ❤

Rachel! Thank you for your amazing videos! Your reassurances that project results don’t have to be perfect to be worthy of pride and usage have had a profound effect on me. I was putting off altering my bridesmaid dress from a friend’s wedding because I have very little experience, no sewing machine, and zero confidence that I could pull it off. Because of that the dress was just hanging in my closet collecting dust and taking up space. Your videos inspired me to do some research and give it my best shot! Many days and waaay too much hand-sewn chiffon later, the dress is altered and beautiful! Not perfect, but beautiful, and I’m going to wear it in a couple weeks! I’m so happy and proud!!! Thank you for giving me the courage to try my best at something new.

I...kinda love & appreciate how you too use random small, heavy, often brass objects as pattern weights. One of these days I will either buy proper set of pattern weights, or make my own, but for now it's random porcelain crab decorative box (?), brass four leaf clover paperweight, fancy wooden pen case for skinny pattern bits, & any moderately heavy book I can lay hands on.
