@@markdaiute5122 The actual settings and conflict in the book are taken from real history. The Lake George NY Southern Adirondack region. This was where a majority of the French & Indian war 1750 to 1758 took place. Fort William Henry existed and now an exact replica of it stands on the burned foundations of the old fort. The Military road where the massacre scene takes place - another actual event- still wanders thru the forest south of Lake George . The waterfall scene where they went behind it, Coopers Cave in Glens Falls. The final scene could be any one of a number of waterfalls in the Adirondacks.

@@optimus163 I am reasonably well versed in the 7-years war. It was fought by provincial armies that served from April/May until late October as well as the Regular Establishment but not militia. Most notably forces from Massachusetts and New Hampshire along with Connecticut and New Jersey. I am familiar with Lake George, Ticonderoga and Crown Point. I have canoed lake George and I have Hiked lake George in the winter from End to end. The movie is wonderfully romantic but in historical detail it is terrible and I would hesitate to state that the tourist attraction fort is an exact replica.

This is one of the last great American movies. Just great cinema. And then he made Heat. Michael Mann has missed not quite as much as he hits but when he hits it’s as good as you can get. Thief is another total classic and Manhunter is very good. Far superior to Red Dragon, which was just an excuse to try and get Anthony Hopkins in another Lecter movie. I even love The Keep. Would love to get a Bluray of that, but not sure it’s available.

I love this movie. I was a first-year US History teacher and working part-time as a bookseller at Barnes and Noble Bookstore when the film came out. I saw a trade magazine with a picture of Day-Lewis on its cover. I knew I just had to use the movie in class as a teaching tool. The star had his sleeves rolled up, tattoos on full exhibition, Natty Bumppo (Hawkeye) was gripping Killdeer tightly while running full tilt toward the camera. Excellent studio still. A year later I used the film as an adjunct to a friend who was involved and had been involved for some time in Rev Recreative groups. My friend came to class and interrupted the movie/class in order to try recruiting the entire class for George III's army while wearing a rev war period uniform and carrying an original museum-quality Brown Bess that he owned. I had that class in my pocket for the rest of the year. I used that film for the next twenty years with the same effect. I used the film to clarify the differences between cinematic history and actual history. I tried my best to emulate what my history instructor had done for us when I'd been in high school thirty years before.

One of the best and most beautiful movies I can recall. The acting is amazing, the cinematography is stunning, the editing as good as it gets and the story, also, is beautifully written. I hesitate to single out actors, but the leads, Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeline Stowe are remarkable craftspeople. Lew is one of the all-time greats is his industry. Madeline Stow stole my heart long before the film and only ensured that she would keep it indefinitely I'm so glad that I own the DVD.

I love watching interviews with Daniel Day Lewis becuase of how much he is different from the characters he portrays. SOme actors, even some of the greatest, lend part of their personalities to the characters they play. This is one of my all time favorite movies. It feels so authentic, and puts you right there in the middle of that conflict to help you understand what it was like to live in those times. The struggle to survive with a vision on building a future. Along with that struggle comes destruction of the old to give way to the new. The loss of life is tragic, but undoubtedly reflects the accuracy of those times.

The name of the guy who taught Lewis to reload while running is Mark Baker. He is a historical re-enactor. That guy who lives the life and taught lewis the other skills is a friend of Bakers. Baker has a cameo in the movie, when they are at the fort, Baker waves at Hawkeye and Unkas and calls out to them from up on the wall.

its not hard. the book is hugely archaically written. the movie is more faithful to the times.

I don't know if I would say that. (True, I do love the movie) The book is written in early 19th century writing style that takes a bit of getting use to by the modern reader. It took me a couple of tries to get into the novel, but once I got the rhythm I really thought it was great. And placing the book in the context of entire Leatherstocking series, James Fennimore Cooper deserves to be considered the first great American novelist. The character of Uncus plays a much bigger role in the novel. Curiously, there are characters that die in the movie that live in the book (Alice and Heyword) and characters that survive in the movie that die in the book (Cora). Also there is no rivalry between Hawkeye and Heyword. Another thing the movie sidesteps the fact that Cora is biracial

I own 3 movies, and Last of the Mohicans is one of them. I watch it every summer for the past 20 years. It moves me every time, bringing a tear to my eye. All the actors and the production staff were outstanding.

One of the most riveting and beautifully captured movie, every part of this movie is amazing and Lewis delivers in all fronts. And of course the musical score is equally amazing, adds so much to the movie and heightens the emotions like only good music can.

One of my top 5 favorite movies. The historical accuracies were amazing, right down to the tiniest details. The first time I saw it I was in my mid twenties at a theater. During the scene of the assault on the fort, as the camera panned across the firing cannons, a soldier held a plum-bob above a cannon while another held a protractor on top of the cannon to make sure it was at the right firing angle. It was only on the screen for a second, but that kind of attention to detail was just awesome. Great writing, great acting, and great location/effects.

Unbelievable. Total preparation. Love this movie and all involved. One of the great historical period action movies of all time. Own the “collectors” edition of it. On top of its beauty visually the performances are spectacular. And the chemistry between the romantic leads.... many years later you can still feel the heat!

Cooper wanted to write a novel that gave the general flavor of an era that had ended shortly before he was born. He noted in the intro that he was not writing a history book - but he did make some of the mistakes believed in his time. MM went even further in bringing the time and characters to life in a believable way. Some of the 'history' is a little wrong - Col Monro did not die - until months later of a heart attack in Albany - but he was a broken man. However, much of the portrait of the people of the era is correct - as is the general outline of the events of 1757 in the NY wilderness.

During filming DDL was given the option to use a lighter non firing musket in scenes not involving shooting. The actual firing musket weighed around 16 pounds. The other less than half the weight. DDL chose to use the firing musket for more authenticity.

If I'm honest, this is probably my favorite movie. Certainly the one I've watched more than any other. I have the DVD (obviously), and had always wished there was a "making of" documentary. How I've just discovered this after all these years is beyond me. Red Ready, whomever you are, you've made my day by posting this. Thank you. I'd like to one of my favorite parts is the Cameron's cabin in the beginning of the movie. And of course the scene in the hospital, with Madeleine / Cora. There is not much to match the beauty of that face.

This was my first movie to see in the theater. I had went with my parents as a young teenager. I loved this movie the first time and have seen a bunch of times! Now all I have to do is hear the music playing in the background and I immediately know what’s on tv! Thank you so much for this beautiful masterpiece. The actors did a well job done. Loved the romances. Both with Cora and Hawkeye & Uncas & Alice. Just wish we saw more with Uncas & Alice. But this will always be a top favorite!!!!💜

I live within a half hour of Fort William Henry, there's a museum on the spot where the battle took place and also another 40 minutes from Fort Ticonderoga (Carillon to the French where Montcalm launched his siege from). I am also directly descended from a man who fought as part of the Colonial militia raised to defend the fort from the French. I am also directly descended from Akwesasne Mohawk on my mother's side and on my father's side, my grand mother was half French-Canadian and Mohawk so my whole family is not only from this area but my ancestors on all sides fought and took part in the battles and wars from New France, to the French & Indian War, the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.

I live where a big part of this movie was filmed, I was in high school at the time and working at a flea market selling ice cream and got to meet a lot of the Native Americans who were extras working on the film. Most of the areas are still the same as seen in the movie.

Sometimes the forces of the Universe bring together the right people, at the right time, with the right ideas. When I first saw this movie at the cinema, I had no idea what it was really about, other than childhood memories of the original movie on B+W television. When the movie finished I just sat silently in my seat, in awe of it's brilliance. The locations, the cinematography, the actors, the soundtrack, the rise and fall of emotions experienced whilst watching it. To this day, when I listen to the soundtrack, or watch the movie on DVD. Nothing has changed that opinion.

An admirable movie with admirable actors who delivered better-than-admirable performances. Besides Day-Lewis, I was most impressed with Wes Studi as Magua. That was a performance that could inspire nightmares! The movie was beyond fantastic and I am so glad this was done so I could know more about it.
