A modder named Set created this really awesome new shell for the Nintendo Switch OLED that makes it run way cooler! The new shell turns the Switch into a dedicated home console, meaning you can no longer play it in handheld mode. But the benefit of using this mod is you can keep the console cooler, even when it’s being overclocked. So let's take a look at this shell and see why it's so awesome!

That was my original intent, I buy, and refurb switches all the time and i occasionally end up with v1-v2/OLEDs that the screen is either broken or dead or can dock but can't output to the LCD and i wanted a way to save the hardware without just scrapping it.

You can also just use it in the normal dock without any modifications. This really doesn't do anything to "give a second life", the only thing it has over a docked switch is the cooling.

For some extra cooling performance you can change the thermal paste between the heat shield and the SOC. I've modded and repaired a lot of Switches and that paste is often very dry. Then what happens is it crumbles and cracks during the removal and reinstallation of the heatsink resulting in hot spots / poor performance. It's always best to replace it if you have the console torn down to that extent.

I bet you could make a simple PCB that uses a small capacitor bank to trick the system into thinking a battery is connected without having to use an actual switch battery. The reason is that batteries degrade a lot faster when constantly plugged in, and if you're trying to make this a dedicated home console you don't want an extra component that can fail just from using the system.

it's been done with a buck converter and a 10k resistor. you steal the controller board out of the original battery, attach a buck converter set to 4.25v to where the battery terminals used to connect, and solder a resistor to a pad near the battery connector to trick the battery temp sensor. suddenly no battery needed.

Con: Needed an area that can attach Joycons for charging/synching. Some games still use Joycons specificially vs pro. I am definitely interested, though there are a few improvements I would bring to it ideally: - Have different shells to accomodate for the different Switch and Dock models on the market (OG, Mariko, OLED) - Have a "Pro" version where we can restore or even add USB ports (in case you have multiple wired controllers plugged in), but it would probably need an external power source for a hub (Maybe it could work using a power supply that is not Nintendo's?) - Have a hard power switch which can turn both the Switch motherboard and the external fan off in one fell swoop - Ideally have a substitute for the battery in case that swells up But overall that sounds like a fun way to salvage a console with a dead screen!

Neat project. I wonder if the factory fan and heat sink/pipe assembly could be ditched in favor of a larger heat sink? Might be a way to get it to run even cooler with quieter fan or maybe even with passive cooling. Also would be nice to see a custom power button flex ribbon that integrates a power cut off for the USB port so the fan doesn't run 24/7. Lastly an SD card extender would be pretty easy to add in to make the SD port usable.

Best case you need to swap the battery every once and awhile to keep it working, worst case it swells/vents. I wonder if it'd be possible to remove the bms from the battery and wire in something like supercaps which don't mind this as much.

I love the idea that we can salvage consoles to give them new life (though if just the screen went out, if it doesn’t make the console not-useable, then its less of an issue really). Also like how this conversion is reversible (in the event replacement screens become more available) That said, I could suggest some improvements. 1. Make the screw points thicker and use Metal threads instead. They make metal threads you can heat up and inset into 3d printed plastics. (this would just take making the screw points thicker to accommodate the metal thread inserts. He wouldn’t even need to do this himself. Just make the print able to accommodate it, while still using his current method for letting you screw into the plastic if you wanted. 2. Not sure how the lid is held in place, but making the plastic tabs abit thicker to allow for inserting magnets or something like that would be neat. 3. Instead of including a custom modded fan (which is what im guessing is happening); include a 4-pin PC fan to USB adapter would be much more universal and allow us to include any 80mm thin PC fan we wanted (perhaps he could include that as standard, and have an option to buy the fan from him for those that wanted an “all in one” package).

I wonder if someone designs a custom cooler that sits right on top of the CPU/GPU/RAM, the system would be near ambient. But tbh, that's over overkill. The stock switch temps not really going above 50°C that often is a real testiment of the engineers at Nintendo. They made a really cool system. And this shell mod just shows that if you get to ventilate the system outside a handheld case with a bigget fan, the cooling is perfect.

I have a couple of cons, first the lack of an micro sd card extension so it can be accessed while installed no need to open. Also he should have a version for the v1 and v2 but he is working on it which is fine. And maybe a power switch for the fan so it doesn't stay on all the time.

I had this same idea in my head a while back, but my idea was of a billet aluminum case with the aluminum acting as a passive cooler for the Cpu/Gpu. That way, I wouldn't need to upgrade the fan. Also, with an integrated gamecube controller adapter right into the billet design and machined nintendo logo.

The fan issue could be easily solved by tapping into the original fan connector and let the switch decide when it needs it on, that being said, the fan being on at all times is most likely the reason you got such good temperatures. 👍🏾

I still got the OG 2017 model. Believe it or not. Just got it back from repair and fan is acting up bad. So Nintendo gave me free Express shipping along with my warranty to repair it. Supervisor said it was probably the Switches fan or heat sink damage on arrival etc. Tbh I wish they did more express over night shipping methods instead of UPS. Would save the trouble.

It is quite difficult because the fan is controlled by voltage. In a PC, it's usually 12 volts and 0.1-0.2 amperes, while in the switch, it's 5 volts and 0.4 amperes, so it's not possible without developing an additional converter. In this case, it would also be necessary to install additional copper radiators and set up the fan for blowing, as in this configuration, a vacuum is created inside and the small fan of the switch simply has nothing to breathe.

The OLED shell would definitely benefit from a switch for the external fan, which doesn't seem too outside the realm of possibilities. I wonder if it will be possible to continue using RCM for hacks on a modded V1 in the future, that'd be my biggest gripe converting over as I do not care much for the handheld capabilities of the switch. @@BowsettesFury Not necessarily. You remove the display (around $30-50 part) and leave in the joycon controller, that makes it fair for a base package to get more people to have and buy games. If you price it anywhere $175-$199, you're in switch lite territory and no one would buy it. This late is the generation though, I wouldn't be surprised if this idea is implemented during the Switch 2 generation.

I'm kind of surprised nintendo doesn't do this with their switch docks anyways, i get its more cost but a fan input even on a mass scale imo would be worth it with helping getting more games to be able to run on the platform. But i am not sure how much the trade off would be with the higher RPMs with overclocking vs hypercooling.
