For some extra cooling performance you can change the thermal paste between the heat shield and the SOC. I've modded and repaired a lot of Switches and that paste is often very dry. Then what happens is it crumbles and cracks during the removal and reinstallation of the heatsink resulting in hot spots / poor performance. It's always best to replace it if you have the console torn down to that extent.

I bet you could make a simple PCB that uses a small capacitor bank to trick the system into thinking a battery is connected without having to use an actual switch battery. The reason is that batteries degrade a lot faster when constantly plugged in, and if you're trying to make this a dedicated home console you don't want an extra component that can fail just from using the system.

I love the idea that we can salvage consoles to give them new life (though if just the screen went out, if it doesn’t make the console not-useable, then its less of an issue really). Also like how this conversion is reversible (in the event replacement screens become more available) That said, I could suggest some improvements. 1. Make the screw points thicker and use Metal threads instead. They make metal threads you can heat up and inset into 3d printed plastics. (this would just take making the screw points thicker to accommodate the metal thread inserts. He wouldn’t even need to do this himself. Just make the print able to accommodate it, while still using his current method for letting you screw into the plastic if you wanted. 2. Not sure how the lid is held in place, but making the plastic tabs abit thicker to allow for inserting magnets or something like that would be neat. 3. Instead of including a custom modded fan (which is what im guessing is happening); include a 4-pin PC fan to USB adapter would be much more universal and allow us to include any 80mm thin PC fan we wanted (perhaps he could include that as standard, and have an option to buy the fan from him for those that wanted an “all in one” package).

It is quite difficult because the fan is controlled by voltage. In a PC, it's usually 12 volts and 0.1-0.2 amperes, while in the switch, it's 5 volts and 0.4 amperes, so it's not possible without developing an additional converter. In this case, it would also be necessary to install additional copper radiators and set up the fan for blowing, as in this configuration, a vacuum is created inside and the small fan of the switch simply has nothing to breathe.

With this working basicly as a normal switch but with a extra fan pushing air through the stock system. Is there anything stopping this design with a little tweaking from being used with a normal switch?

You could probably meet this mod halfway by simply removing the back shell and shielding and slot it into a simple 3D printed shell with a fan attached to it.

I would recommend trying to use a more aggressive overclock suite like 4ifir for this. You may easily be able to push way higher performance on this beast and properly push the cooling system. When I gamed on my VR switch, I was able to achieve 60 fps on totk for a while

4FIR falsely reports its clocks, temps and FPS. I would recommend just about everyone steer clear of it.

I really do love the idea that we've been taking nintendo consoles and turning them into handhelds (wii) and we've been taking nintendo handhelds and turning them into coloes (gba, switch).

I absolutely love this! Before we know it the switch 2 (or whatever it'll will be named) will be released and the market will be flooded with not only used, but many more broken switches. Turning them into home consoles will be a game changer. The mod community will be amazing, I'm so excited!

This is like perfect timing as well. I'm always interested in taking only tech that I don't really use often and just making it as compact yet accessible as possible afterwards like with the PS2 mini. Saves spaces, time, and weight to bring to events and parties if y'all just wanna kick around and have fun

I really love this, but I would use the first revision switch for modding and playing homebrew and backups. I almost feel if Nintendo did a standalone TV, it would be around $150.
@BowsettesFury Жыл бұрын
Would be way more expensive than that.
@ForsakenWolf Жыл бұрын
@@BowsettesFury Not necessarily. You remove the display (around $30-50 part) and leave in the joycon controller, that makes it fair for a base package to get more people to have and buy games. If you price it anywhere $175-$199, you're in switch lite territory and no one would buy it. This late is the generation though, I wouldn't be surprised if this idea is implemented during the Switch 2 generation.

One other con I can think of is how homebrew payloads tend to just use the integrated screen, so it might be some trouble with that. Unless I'm wrong and things work a little differently with modchipped systems.

a mesh cover for the air intakes would be awesome but if you're already in the DIY mind frame of this kind of project, there's nothing stopping someone from doing it themselves. it would just be cool to see it come with the kit.

I have a couple of cons, first the lack of an micro sd card extension so it can be accessed while installed no need to open. Also he should have a version for the v1 and v2 but he is working on it which is fine. And maybe a power switch for the fan so it doesn't stay on all the time.

ifixit also sells replacement parts for the switch, so even if the screen is dead you could just replace it, not risk getting your Nintendo / you banned, and still dock or handheld.

As someone that Never play switch on hands and only as console that would be epic. Some recommendation : As you mention Overclock, I think this "shell/consolifier" or what ever the name that fit, I will call it the Magic there (it bring spark and look cool :D) You probably need RCM mode and seeing how volume button are block I think making it accessible would be nice (I do not mean physical button on the shell but having the ribbon to slide/ move easier) And same for the screen port, as if I am right RCM tools require on board screen :) (That only for those that care about rcm mode etc so that pretty a niche) Beside it, about the fan noise why not "just" include control slider to manually adjust the speed and even include it in shell? It would bring a bit the cost up but that would be doable with most fan and that kind of slider do not cost that much I am sure users/customers are willing to pay few bucks more to be able to turn down/off that fan :) Waiting for V1 switch mode like like, I will wait patiently :D

As for the fan problem, the one included has no speed control and will be running full speed all the time. I believe I have seen fans that have on-board temperature sensors which will adjust the speed of the fan automatically. Presumably the fan would shut off if the temperature was low enough (as it should). If you could find one the right size, you could put it in yourself.
@ModBros8434 Жыл бұрын
An official TV only Switch Pro would be pretty great. It would probably be able to bypass many of the compromises that had to be made to allow the console to work in both handheld and docked mode, greatly increasing the potential power of the console.

I'm no engineer, but i've heard some talk about ventilation/cooling mods actually having the opposite effect on some hardware that is designed to cool more than just the CPU itself. In this case, (literally, this physical case) there is probably overkill airflow and breathing room that all components are being well cooled, but under certain circumstances on some hardware you might see components other than the CPU run extra hot because the CPU was cool enough to tell the fan to turn off, when in reality something like the ram (or whatever other part) was relying on the CPU fan for cooling as well
@xGMV Жыл бұрын
Well, yes you are right, but there are overrides for this stuff. Not sure if it applies to the Switch, but it does apply to the PS4, if I'm not mistaken.
@kvernesdotten Жыл бұрын
I dont think the switch needs a dedicated tv console version, but a better dock would help alot. Some actual active cooling in it would do wonders if done correctly, as it is now the "dock" is just a piece of plastic with a usb port in it

back in the early 2000s gaming pcs would have some kinda voltage potentiometer as a fan speed controller, it was quick and simple but it would probably be a good addition to address the only real con
@thankyouverymochi Жыл бұрын
for those who are unfamiliar with overclocked term, it means the chip is being used at maximum potential. it is completely safe as long as the cooling is sufficient, this build is arguably safer and more durable than the stock nintendo switch as it has lower temperature and the cooling perform better than stock switch. in smartphone industry, some even promote their overclocked chip as 'new chip' even though it's the same chip. they did it because it performs better, which usually came with better cooling to compensate for higher performance

This is very cool. If you can get a damaged OLED Switch for cheap and don't need the handheld functionality this is perfect. However I see a few more cons here. First the SD card slot lacks easy access. If you want to replace the card you need to disassemble a part of this kit. Second thing, is that you are also losing the joycon docking function. If you don't own a compatible wireless controler there's another expense (either a seperate joycon dock or a new controler). And finally the fact that this is dedicated only for the OLED Switch is the last con I see. Overall the idea is great but with place for further improvements.

Fantastic! That is an awesome initiative. My main concern with Nintendo Switch longevity, is that the current switch models don't work when battery is depleted... meaning even if you got it plugged in the dock, at less than 3% battery, it won't power on.
