Making time to write with block planning

Try this: marking out times in your calendar to write. It's working for me as I juggle different commitments, let's see if it's useful for you.

Nice tips. I thought of a variation. Pick one cell and make it a pop-up menu. Enter strings to describe projects. Set conditional formatting to set the cell background based on which project is chosen. Copy that cell with command-c, select every cell in the table and paste with command-v. Now you can select time block assignments from a menu. Merging cells works as expected. Unmerging will set previously merged cells to blank, so you have to re-paste the pop-up and conditional formatting. If you set the pop-up to start with None, it helps in the process. If you want to add or delete projects, select all cells and modify the pop-up choices and conditional formatting. One change updates every selected cell without disturbing the value selected in each. Hours of fun with block planning without ever having to lift a finger on any of the actual tasks! 😁

I have time blocking set in my calendar and it works for my gym time (at home), probably because I get reminders for it on every device. It's hard to miss. Sometimes I actually go do something physical so I can close my rings and get emojis from my niece. If only there were rings for things like writing or work! I think I'll make my writing and work blocks nag me too. Maybe it with help.

I'm in a love/hate and sometimes love/loathe relationship with notifications. I am still getting so many that they stop being effective and are just irritating, even though I've been trying to cut them down. There is a kind-of ring equivalent for some work, though: Scrivener has a feature where you set a word count and a ring fills up as you near it. Or is that Final Draft? You can tell I don't use it.

@@WilliamGallagher Yes. My phone and my watch have long been ignored for too many notifications. Strangely the only ones I allow on my Mac are the calendar ones, which may be why they're so effective for me. So I tried it today and set a writing block for 5- 6pm and finished a thing for the first time this month. I'll have to see if my 'Writing' shortcut can be set to run at my preferred time and turns off just before my next thing an hour later. It sets a focus mode blocking calls and all notifications everywhere then puts some quiet background music playing.
