I needed to make some torus skirting boards for a job so I filmed the process I go through to produce this moulding.
Torus skirting board is very popular here in the UK.

I wish I had access to some of that machinery. Unfortunately I have to get my skirting from Wickes and it's not that good. I might copy the idea of making stress relief cuts in the back using a circular saw when I next do some skirting though, as the skirting you get from the retail shops warps really badly. Thanks for showing us the full process of making them from scratch, was very interesting.

I am a retired chippy ( old Scouse Riversdale Tech building department pre app student ) I have seen lengths of timber in some wood yards that would of looked more at home in an aircraft propeller factory ,it was so badly warped & twisted . Don’t think some of these timber merchants have a clue how to correctly season & store timber these days. It would take more than relief cuts to sort the likes of that old gash stuff out .Always go & select your own timber & collect it yourself if possible .If you let them select & deliver some of them will palm you off with timber that has more shakes than an Middle Eastern desert state .

I've just built a small router table and had a go at making some skirting with a Rutland moulding bit out of MDF. I'm finding that I get some break out where the bottom of the moulding transitions into the finished face of the board. How can I combat that? Do I need to take shallower cuts? Make a fence that gives closer to a zero clearance? Feed it slower? I thought I had it cracked but now that I've painted the boards, there's actually quite a bit. Just standard grade MDF as well. Cheers.
@spendtimesavemoneydiy
@spendtimesavemoneydiy Жыл бұрын
Moisture resistant mdf has closer fibres so usually has a cleaner finish. Try taking most of the meat out and then the final pass just a shallow pass. You need a steady pace to feed it through the cutter not too fast. The speed of the cutter should be correct for it's size. Feather boards might help aswell to maintain even pressure. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on 👍🏼

@@spendtimesavemoneydiy it must just be my lack of machining experience then. The router bit is brand new and I did use feather boards. Funnily enough the facings came out ok, it was just the skirtings.

@@rodgerq bit of trial and error with depth of passes feed rate and bit speed on some off cuts and you'll get it spot on. And remember you get 2 goes with skirting, if you mess up just turn the board over and you can do it again 👍🏼

Thanks for this - I like seeing how others approach a job. I had never thought of changing the cutters while mounted on the spindle - I might cut myself less doing that so I'll give it a go. I usually leave a 1/4" of space between the cutter and the infeed fence to allow more airflow so the dust collector can remove the waste but you're right in that the limiters only allow a millimetre or so of feed per cut so it might not make a big difference. Cheers
