Rather than use the double-edged razor blades, I've been using the blades from disposable razors. They're easily removed from the plastics parts and there are several blades per razor. Having only one sharp edge means there is less chance of accidentally cutting your fingers!

Why not use paraffin instead of the carrot ? I remember from school (5-8 grade) the tool used to make the cuts had a holder for the razor blade, it kept the blade parallel to the holder where the sample encased in paraffin went. The blade holder was fixed to the sample holder and had a round handle almost like a doorknob only smaller :-).

Paraffin wax is not as home user friendly, and costs more. The idea of using carrot or potato to hold the specimen is simplicity, accessibility, and low cost for home hobbyists.
