Extremely well done: Clear, easy to follow. She knows her stuff, but equally importantly, she knows how to instruct us with clear descriptions.

Thank you for this! I watched other videos and was on the hunt for a very fine sieve and some fancy flour! I do remember my mother making this for projects. I think this is what she used to apply wallpaper cutouts to her bedroom furniture. I wonder if she used it to add photos to albums, too. I remember LePages mucilage, too. I so appreciate your videos!!!!

I live in Australia in a hot, humid region. Once applied to the fabric and then used to make the boxes and dried etc., does it ever ‘grow mould?’. Thanks for the recipe too.

I have never had any issue with mold or insects from the use of wheat paste. It is hot and dry here during the summer, but damp in the winter, although never very cold. I would be very surprised if you experienced any negative effects with wheat paste in your environment.

Does this dry clear or is it cloudy milky. Also is this acid free so it wont yellow over time. You did say it archival. I want my art framing material to be as natural as possible.

Wheat paste dries clear and is Ph neutral.

Thanks for this information! You said you can add clove oil as an anti-fungal agent for your wheat paste. Could you substitute tea tree oil for clove oil?
@KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks2 жыл бұрын
I don't really know if you could use this as a substitute. As I mention in my video, I like to use the paste when it's fresh, and I only keep what's left over if I know I'm going to be using it in the next day or two. So, I never add anything to it. It literally takes me 5 minutes to make paste, so I just don't personally see any good reason to use any of the preservation techniques. :)

I am thoroughly enjoying your videos and learning s much. Please forgive my ignorance, but. . . is wheat flour just plain old all purpose Gold Medal flour or is it a specialty product? Thanks so much for your information.
@KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words, Diane. Wheat flour is just the plain old all-purpose stuff you buy at the grocery store. I use that term to differentiate it from rice flour, almond flour, etc. (But you can also make paste from rice flour, if you wanted to. :))

Will this work like elmers glue? Thanks for the video 💕
@KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks2 жыл бұрын
No. Elmer's glue is more like PVA glue - it is permanent when dry. Wheat paste is water soluble once dry, which is why you want to use it for making bookcloth. If it goes through the weave of your fabric and gets on the front, it can be wiped off even after it dries. Elmer's glue, like PVA glue, will ruin your bookcloth if it seeps through the weave.

Thanks, Alejandro! Hope it helps. Once you make this paste once it's really easy every time after that. :)

I brought home a massive antique Bible and my son fell in love. Now I have to repair, which is fine... But I didn't want to pay $28 for a small container of wheat paste. Thank you!!

How to keep ink from smearing? I'm using an old HP household printer. I've tried normal paper and heavy weight paper. The black ink smears instantly.
@KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks2 жыл бұрын
Did you test it to see if the ink is waterproof? My HP large format printer uses waterproof ink (pigment based), but my Epson desktop does not. It uses dye based ink and the ink smears when wet. If your ink is smearing when wet, then you will have to find a different printer to use - maybe something at a local print shop like Staples, or Office Supply.

Also, careyholman posted this comment on my bookcloth video. I haven't tried either of the following products, but they might be worth looking into. "The two products I use to print on cloth with water soluble ink are InkAid and Bubblejet Set. I’ve only tried the white matte InkAid on cloth, but now that I’m thinking about it, I’ll try some clear, too. The Bubblejet Set requires more steps, produces a more subtle image, and leaves the cloth soft and supple. InkAid is simpler to use, creates a more vibrant image, and leaves the cloth a bit stiff - which is fine for bookcloth. Just my two cents for those with printer ink that needs a bit of help in wet conditions."

It is flour or starch? like you said un the book cloth video?
@KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks5 жыл бұрын
I just use wheat flour, like you'd buy at a grocery store. You can make or buy wheat starch, but making it is a bit complicated, and buying it is a bit expensive. I have found this paste that is made from wheat flour to be every bit as reliable as paste made from wheat starch.

Do wheat paste expire?
@KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks3 жыл бұрын
Yes. It will only last a week or two in the refrigerator and then it will get old and possibly moldy. I always make small batches for what I'm doing that day and then throw the rest away. It's so easy to make (10 minutes at the most) that it's easier and better just to make fresh paste when you need it.
