I dont know that wood but it seems too light and soft perhaps? a bokken has to whitstand (sorry for bad english) quite a few hard strikes a) without braking (its dangerous...same reason why they dont use varnish as far as i know) and b) without straining the student with much vibration. That and the fact that a real sword would be much heavier so, the bokuto has to be equally balanced, and close or even heavier than an actual sword. afterall its for training (even if thats kinda in between the truth as you wont really "use" the sword but oh well)

Back when I was 13, 2003, I used to make a lot of word swords. Pretty dam good too. Use to try to sell them through out the neighborhood where I lived. Nobody wanted to buy one lol. Right now is the best time to sell wood art. The internet is amazing. So many people want to buy stuff like this. I like to make wooden sheaths to go with it though.
@Tootnscoot4 ай бұрын
Quick tip from someone who has used and made many of these and similar items. Just like when making a bow you want to find a singe ring and follow it down your wood. This helps with both flexibility and rigidity and significantly adds strength. Don't cut across the grains to curve the sword. Steam the wood and bend it to the curve under pressure. It's such a slight bend it's nit going to tear your wood fibers. Think of it like this pulling a across a string vs pulling down a string. Shorter fibers are weaker so you want long continuous interwoven fibers. You will have a much much stronger and harder bokken. Try that and compare and you'll see what I mean

Ah the Gintama one... The most common material for souvenir bokuto in japan is kashi which is a japanes acorn tree in the buna family. But the japanese maple wood (momiji) and ebony (kokutan) are the two most traditional materials used.

I once made one using Baltic Birch laminations in 3 pieces - On the center piece of a 1/2" thick I drilled holes ABOUT every 3-4" and inserted a 5/8" nut - I had IMHO gotten the weight and balance very close to alive blade weapon - There were also just a few holes with nuts in the part of the handle closest to the tsuba - The 2 outside laminations were 1/4" thick - The sword could then be shaped, and finished as desired - Just thought I'd mention this.

Hornbeam is a very hard timber, hence the name iron-wood. Hornbeam is rarely used for general carpentry because of the difficulty of working it. Its hardness means it has been used for carving boards, tool handles, coach wheels, piano actions - places a very tough wood is required. In fact the timber is so hard it's been used as gear pegs in simple machines, including traditional windmills. It is sometimes coppiced to provide hardwood poles, and also used in parquet flooring. It has even been used to produce wooden screws.

This is a great video. What I'd like to know is how I can make one, and what materials I'd need besides the wood, because I cannot seem to find one in my size. I am 6' 8" and require an 11" grip (to be practical) and a blade length of 38 to 42 inches, so the whole bokken needs to be about 49 to 53 inches in total, and well it's pretty difficult to find something like that in a store/ online. I don't know anyone who would custom make one for an affordable price, and also I'd like to learn the craft for myself. Standard full size bokken is around 39" for anyone who is unaware.
