I just had to come back to this vid and say thank you so much for this info! I tried making a cologne with the Club 190 instead of the Dark Rum that I normally use and what a HUGE difference! My normal blend smelled so different that I had to modify it. I could actually smell the EOs in it without the covered scent of rum! And it blended without any effort. Valuable advice, wonderful demo and I truly appreciate you sharing this!

Great video! Trust me, I have watched MANY KZbin videos where the person rambles, and you DO NOT ramble, you explain things in an in depth and understandable manner. Exactly the info I needed to clear up the Witch Hazel vs Isopropyl vs Vodka debate. I am VERY picky about my perfume, and have always had problems finding that exact scent I want. I have now gotten into pure essential oils, and I can't wait to start making my own perfumes. Since I am a newbie to DIY perfume, this video was perfect to help me get started. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

This is great information. Basically a no to Witch Hazel and Vodka, because neither mixes well with EO or FO and no to Isopropyl Alcohol (99%) because the scent is way too strong and it dries out the skin too much even though it mixes well with EO and FO and only use Grain Alcohol/Everclear or Perfumer's alcohol because they both mix well and don't over power the scent from the EO or FO. Thank you so much as I'm a beginner and researching information.

I love this video!!! I just wanted to say thank you so much for giving me the right information before I start making my perfumes. I love every beauty product a women can get their hands on but the cost is so high. You spend a lot of money of perfumes that take a toll on your skin. Our skin is also an organ which many people don't know or forget. I am so excited to start making my own organic perfumes so I may smell nice without the damage to my skin. You are so amazing for doing this!!!!

Goooooooooooooood morning, Jeannie Jeffrey. 💓 💛 💚 💙 💜 Hope you are having a LOVELY weekend. 💓 💛 💚 💙 💜 Have you checked to see if EverClear is sold in your state? That is what I usually used until my store no longer carried it, but instead was selling Club 190. You could also order perfumer's alcohol which is a lot cheaper due to it not having the alcohol tax added onto it. I currently don't sell my perfumes, but have thought about it. 🌸 💮 🏵️ It's something I may do in the very near future. Or maybe write a formulation book since I'm technically an author.

Excellent demonstration and information. There is a low enough water content in the isopropyl alcohol, so that the oils will dissolve in it because the alcohol portion of the mixture is high enough to make the oils fully miscible. However, that smell that you mentioned is from the compounds they use to 'denature' the alcohol, or make it bitter so it will not be consumed by humans or animals. They use things like castor oil and wintergreen oil to do this, and the combination of these and some other toxic additives are what give 'rubbing alcohol' it's distinct odor. Perfumers' alcohol blends are denatured with many different things as well, namely bitrex.

Great Job this is very informative, I just purchased my essential oils as this will be my hobby going forward. I have some very expensive parfumes, edt, and the like; that after I become just decent In my perfume making I will give away the cologne's I have. I have some nice fragrances like Bond No 9 products, Tom Ford, Chanel Blu, Allure, and many other top cologne's. Giving them away will be my motivation to recreate my own unique brands I am very excited. After seeing this, I only will use Everclear, or Perfume Alcohol for my creations. Peace n Happiness.

Excellent breakdown. You do a fantastic demonstration on why some alcohols work and some don't. Quick question. Which alcohol has changes the original scent of the essential oils the least? Thanks.
@AloraDillon6 жыл бұрын
Goooooood evening, Oscar Castellanos, and welcome to the community! 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸 We pray this message finds you and your loved ones doing well and in excellent health! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 To answer your question as to which alcohol creates the LEAST change in the original formulated scent would be, in my opinion, 200 Proof Perfumer's Alcohol. Second would be be the 189 Proof Everclear or Club 190. Because the consumption alcohols are legal to drink, they do not carry the denaturants necessary for a perfumers alcohol to keep the taxes down. Despite the PA having some denaturant in it, it is slight and undetectable... and it's cheaper without sacrifice of quality. I hope this was helpful and that you and your loved ones have an absolutely LOVELY day! 🌞🌞🌞 Lots of loves and huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs being 🌼🌸 SCENT 🌸🌼 your way! Alora & Vivian 💖💖💖💖💖

I’m so glad you visualized this! It’s definitely helpful. I’ve made some with medical alcohol but the alcohol smell certainly has an effect. It’s not impossible to work with but you definitely have to take its own scent in consideration. I’ll give everclear or perfumers alcohol a try, at least to smell the difference for my own blends.

There's a way around it with the isopropyl alcohol whatever scent you plan on using...your base note like citrus, for example, you can keep the peels in your alcohol and it helps it blend better, same goes for exotic scents or herbal ones. Fair warning there will be a bit of color in it after.

I already made some awesome Mandarin Orange Peel tincture using the 190 proof Grain Alcohol from the liquor store and the rinds of dried Mandarin Orange Peels. It SUCKED the color out of the rind and my tincture is indeed ORANGE! LOL... but it smells divine! I would NEVER be able to spray it on my clothes as it would stain them. But... it was really cool making these tinctures. I did one with Basil and another one with Rosemary. The rosemary was INCREDIBLE. The basil, I think I need to add more leaves. 🍃🍃🍃🍃 Thank you, again, SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for your comment! Lots of loves and huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs being 🌼🌸 SCENT 🌸🌼 your way! hi, have you ever heard of DMSO? in the US they will not label it a drug but over 1000 documented medical studies conflict with what FDA is claiming . its labeled a solvent only and works great on the body and is said to be able to bread down other drugs without compromise them and its also fastest substance known to pass through our skin. have ever tried using that? its not alcohol based but might still work IDK just a thought.

Goooood afternoon, Jeff Wolf 😊 😊 😊 We hope this message finds you and your loved ones doing well and in good health! 😍 🌸 🤗 I have heard of DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide) but have never used it as a solvent. I believe that since it is an oxidizing chemical, it wouldn't be an ideal carrier for fragrance since we are wanting to prevent our formulas from oxidizing the best we can. But I love that you are thinking about the possibilities! It goes to show you are a forward kind of thinker and that's AWESOME in this industry 🤗 🤗 🤗 I'll do some reading up on the compound for more detail and better understanding of it. Thank you sooooooooooooo much for sharing your thoughts! Keep them coming!!! ❤️ 💛 💚 💙 💜 And if you do get to test your theories, please let me know how it goes. As a geochemistry PhD student, I love this video. It's a great demo that shows miscibility. I do have a question. I am just about to start experimenting making perfumes. I want to use whiskeys like smokey scotch or bourbon and rum. What ratio would you suggest to carrier alcohol and essential oils? Thanks!!!
@AloraDillon3 жыл бұрын
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much, Jono, for your lovely comment! Wishing you and your loved ones all the very best and hoping you stay safe and healthy all year long! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ As for your question... and a very good one, at that... using whiskeys, scotch, bourbons, and rum are excellent additons to a fragrance. Just keep in mind the ratio of alcohol to water and mix it with the higher grain alcohol such as Everclear or Club 190, or you can use the perfumer's Alcohol that is 200 Proof which will allow you to use a little more of the whiskeys, bourbons and such when decorating your fragrance. Commercial fragrances will use up to 25% distilled water depending on the materials, and their miscibility, used to craft the fragrance concentrate. These highly aromatic alcohols do add an amazing depth to final fragrances, at least, in my opinion. I think this is a great topic to cover in a future video to showcase exactly how you can use these fragrant alcohols in a personal fragrance that is unique to your vision. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I can imagine using these alcohols as a base for tincturing, too. Oh the possibilites! You have my creative mind going!!! LOL :-) Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and ideas and allowing us to become a part of your fragrance journey! thanks so much for sharing this knowledge with everyone like this. I was going to make some perfume using my jasmine which isn't cheap with isoprop but am glad i watched this first so not to waste my jasmine. The price of perfumers alcohol is not too high so why not use it. For now i'm going to probably just make a solid perfume until I get some.
@AloraDillon5 жыл бұрын
Truly my pleasure, Ophelia! 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸 Solid fragrances are just as lovely, in my opinion! You should check out Creating Perfume's website for their Jasmine wax that is the wax left over from extraction when creating a jasmine absolute. OMG... IT IS GORGEOUS! I should do another video on it. But, you would need VERY VERY little Jasmine Absolute in your solid fragrance because the essence of the jasmine petals are left in the jasmine wax. I believe you would fall in LOVE with it. AND, it's CHEAP! I actually added the wax to perfumer's alcohol and shook the heck out of it. I let it set for a week and the wax separated and settled to the bottom. What was left was a VERY strong Jasmine perfume. I'm telling you, that is a little kept secret... I just may have to talk about that this Monday on our Live Stream! THANK YOU for the idea! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 Here is the link to the Jasmine Wax: www.creatingperfume.com/jasminwax.aspx I hope that you and your loved ones have an absolutely LOVELY day! 🌞🌞🌞 Lots of loves and huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs being 🌼🌸 SCENT 🌸🌼 your way! Also, if you use alcohol in products like this to sell, you cannot ship to customers in the US via air mail or internationally. It must be labeled appropriately and shipped ground only which can be more expensive than first class or priority. I see people breaking all the rules and if caught, the fine is not worth it. Great break down of these ingredients. I cringe when I see people selling witch hazel and essential oils. I call it snake oil.

@AloraDillon3 жыл бұрын
Truly my pleasure, Manny. Thank you for watching and allowing us to be a part of your fragrance journey. Might I suggest using DPG for fine fragrance as it is used in all commercial fragrances due to its miscible properties in alcohol and water. This will prevent clouding for some stubborn materials and helps keep powders suspended in solution. ❤😍❤ let me know if this was helpful ~ Alora

oil is lighter than water. u meant to say oil is heavier than the alcohol. but very helpful vid! thank u

Gooooooooooooooooooooood afternoon, A_nDinG, and thank you soooooooo much for joining the community. ❤️ 💛 💚 💙 💜 We hope this message finds you and your loved ones doing well and in good health! 😍 🌸 🤗 You are absolutely correct. Most of the time, oil is lighter than water, especially when dealing with fattier oils that we cook with. But with essential oils, some oils, like the one I used in the video, are more dense and heavier than water. When steam distilling, the hydrosol will either be at the bottom of the separation funnel or on the top. Cassia Bark is one of those oils that would be at the bottom of the separation funnel and the hydrosol on the top. 🌻 🌼 🌺 🌸 💮 🏵️ My understanding of why some oils are denser when distilling is that they are made up of heavier, molecular materials that come mostly from twigs, bark, stems and other heavier materials. But when distilling more of a "vegetative aromatic material" like petals, the oil will be much lighter and will float. 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 So... what I SHOULD have said is "Water and oil don't mix, rather, they will separate. Depending on the density of the oil will determine if it will float or sink." 😁 🙃😁 🙃😁 🙃 Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for pointing this out! You ROCK! 🤗🤗🤗 I believe this content requires a video of its own and you are super AWESOME for inspiring it!!!! 💓💓💓💓💓 Lots and lots of loves and huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs being 🌼🌸 SCENT 🌸🌼 your way! Gooooooooooooood afternoon, Mohammedi Dehgamwala. I hope this message finds you and your loved ones doing well and in good health 😉 I prefer using 200 Proof SDA 40-B Perfumers Alcohol as my the carrier in my final product. No other ingredients, other than fragrance concentrate, are necessary when using the 200 Proof. I suggest not using distilled water in order to prevent bacteria growth. 😉 I hope this helped and that you have a LOVELY day! I enjoyed your tutorial very much. I do have one thing to add, however. When a bottle of alchohol, which is made for beverages; the "Proof", indicated will always be TWICE the percentage of the alcohol content. For example, 151 Rum is 75 and one half percent alcohol. Since the ingredients of any given liquid, or substance, can not go over 100 percent, which is it's entirety. Like the perfumes you are demonstrating, ingredients must be measure and added carefully to the formula, so that we can insure our results are consistent and repeatable later. Thank you. I will look forward to more lessons. You are a good teach.

Hi hello! Thank you so much for this video. I'm just beginning my DIY fragrance journey, and I made a batch with 40% alcohol last night . . . turned out like your vodka sample haha. Wish I had watched this video first. Anyway, I want to try again, and I will be going to pick up some Everclear this afternoon! However, I do have a question. The batch I made last night used Mezcal (80 proof) as the alcohol; I used Mezcal because I love the smoky smell, but 1. It obviously wasn't high enough proof for the EOs to be miscible. 2. The smoky smell was WAY too overpowering and buried the EOs. That being said, when I try again with Everclear, can I still add a small amount of Mezcal in order to introduce that scent? Will it properly mix? And what would you suggest for ratios? For example, would something like 75% Everclear, 15% EOs, 5% Mezcal, 5% Water work? Thanks! Stuart

Certainly, @MyBob369 ! Ethanol 96%, as long as it's pure, is commonly used in DIY perfumery. It's a good carrier for fragrances due to its high purity, ensuring the true essence of the scent shines through. Again, just make sure if it's denatured, that it's safe for the skin. Happy blending! 😊🌺💧🌹~ Alora

If I want to create a perfume which can be used on clothes as well, what will I need to use? Could you please make a video in which you can tell us how commercial perfumes can be created at home?

Gooooooooood morning, raj kamal, and welcome to the community! 😘😘😘 We hope this message finds you and your loved ones doing well and in good health! 😍 🌸 🤗 My apologies in my delay. You have SEVERAL wonderful questions. 🤗🤗🤗 Depending on the type off Essential Oil or ingredient used and at what concentrate of Fragrance Concentrate you use in your final blend will determine if a fragrance will stain your clothes. Most, if blended properly, will not do so. However, it is ALWAYS a good practice to take a few white samples of cloth such as Silk, Cotton and Linen and spray your final product blend on each one to see if they will cause a stain. 🌼🌼🌼 Again, this was an EXCELLENT question! You can make professional grade fragrances quite easily from your home by choosing the highest quality of PROFESSIONAL ingredients. You can find a HUGE list of ingredients used in the perfuming industry, here: ifraorg.org/en-us/ingredients Currently, there are 3,999 ingredients listed by IFRA Org that have been tested and either approved for use, restricted, prohibited or contain Specifications for use. These ingredients can be checked here: ifraorg.org/en-us/standards-library 😊😊😊 A GREAT place to start is of course, CreatingPerfume.com. It's the supplier I use and trust and they currently carry over 1100 ingredients! That's A LOT! And, they also have accords. Keep an eye out on our channel for additional How To videos that help get you BLENDING immediately so that you can start training your nose sooner, rather than later. 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺 I hope this was helpful and that you have a SUPER lovely day! Gooooooooooooooooood evening, Budget Media Waley and welcome to the community! 💓 💛 💚 💙 💜 Lots of loves and huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs being sent to you and your family in India 💓 💛 💚 💙 💜 The most cost effective way of making perfume would be to use Perfumer's Alcohol. Hi Alora, Thank you for doing this. It really answered a lot of questions I wasn't getting on google searches. So everclear and perfumers alcohol are the best to mix, but what would the result be if you used a 95% - 190proof moonshine?
@AloraDillon7 жыл бұрын
Truly my pleasure James Pershing, and welcome to the community 💓 💛 💚 💙 💜 If Moonshine is definitely 190 Proof (95%) alcohol, you are GOOD TO GO! 💓 💛 💚 💙 💜 Moonshine sold in our spirits store is not that strong. But if you know of someone who can make moonshine via distilling, then I say GO for it 🌼 🌺 🌸 💮 🏵️ There is a way to test the alcohol to make sure that it is, in fact, a higher percentage of alcohol. Most folks who do alcohol distilling have the buoyant checker thingy. 😁 😋 😁 😋 😁 😋 Alcoholmeter: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrometer Located under: Specialized hydrometers I hope this was helpful and please let me know how your formulations turn out using good ole' moonshine! 😍🌸🤗 Hope you and your family are doing well and lots of loves and huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs being 🌼🌸 SCENT 🌸🌼 your way! Very interesting! I landed here by chance (watching a BBC documentary about perfume) but I always enjoy learning "practical science" stuff like that. I do have a question though: if I dissolve the oils in alcohol and then add the mixture to something else (let's say I want to make a diy cleaning product nicer smelling) will the oil separate again? Or does it somehow "bond" with the alkohol molecules and stays dissolved? Thanks alot and have a lovely day!
@AloraDillon7 жыл бұрын
Gooooooooood afternoon, Rara Avis, and welcome to the community. We hope this message finds you and your loved ones doing well and in good health. 😍🌼🤗 That's an EXCELLENT question! If you dissolve your fragrance in Alcohol, will the oil eventually separate if added to a cleaning product that is not miscible with oil? With my experience, the oil will separate from the mixture if a non miscible ingredient is added later or, at the very least, will cause cloudiness. This will only happen when the threshold has been reached for the alcohol and oil bonds to be weakened due to the water being present. However, it's still okay to shake your mixture before use if you are using it for cleaning purposes. The fragrance is SOOOOO minute that it will most likely disperse evenly with each use. Again, you can shake before each use to ensure this. ❤️ 💛 💚 💙 💜 There are also a lot of DIYers who don't mind the beading of fragrance oil when mixed with Vodka or other non-miscible ingredients and will shake the mixture before each spritz. The only difference here is that there is more water (which is what causes the separation), less alcohol... but the same amount of fragrance. So... shaking and spritzing is perfectly fine if you are using this for your own personal use and don't mind the additional step. 😊😊😊 I hope this was helpful and thank you, again, soooooo much for joining us! 💓💓💓💓 Lots of loves and huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs being 🌼🌸 SCENT 🌸🌼 your way! Alora Dillon A thank you so much! That's what I suspected. I had no idea, perfume making was something you could do at home, btw. I always assumed, the ingredients would be too expensive. It would also be a fun thing to do with girlfriends or for a bachelorettes party or something. I'm surprised it's not a "thing", like wine tastings or stuff. I've only just started looking into diy cleaning products and also cremes and body oils and stuff. Maybe I'll try myself with perfumes, too ☺

It's truly our pleasure, Sweetie! ❤️ 💛 💚 💙 💜 And YES... Bespoke fragrances are definitely becoming more and more popular. LOL... We've been doing it for YEARS... and the trend is JUST finally catching up. It's all about KNOWING what's going in your product rather than guessing. LOL That's why I have NO problem sharing what we are putting in a perfume... because, most people merely want to KNOW what they are buying... not make it themselves. ❤️ 💛 💚 💙 💜 So why deny a person that right, you know? I truly hope you enjoy our future videos... we will talk about how to create a perfume bar for such occasions as birthday parties, bachelorette parties and even perfume parties for girlfriends mingled with wine tasting, too. :-) And believe it or not, men are becoming more and more interested in going to fragrance parties to learn more about what cologne would be right for them. Urmila Temgire right or vegetable glycerin?
@AloraDillon7 жыл бұрын
Gooooooooooooooood morning Urmila Temgire ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️ We hope this message finds you and your loved ones doing well and in good health! 😍 🌸 🤗 Propylene Glycol is hardly ever used, if at all, in fragrance. However, it is a common solvent in the food industry and in the cosmetic industry as a moisturizing retention agent. This means it attracts water. So, if this is used in your fragrance, it could cause solubility issues as well as create separation of ingredients as it ages. If you are looking for a diluent to cut your ingredients with, my suggestion would be to use either IPM (Isopropyl Myristate) or TriEthyl Citrate Natural (TEC). Both are EXCELLENT solvents for fine fragrance.🏵️🏵️🏵️ I hope this was helpful. 😊😊😊😊😊 Have an absolutely LOVELY day! 🌺🌺🌺 Lots of loves and huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs being 🌼🌸 SCENT 🌸🌼 your way! @AloraDillon7 жыл бұрын
Goooooooooooooood morning, caramelcocoa234 ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️ We hope this message finds you and your loved ones doing well and in good health! 😍 🌸 🤗 Vegetable glycerin is often talked about on several blogs and channels as a moisturizing agent that when you blend it with your fragrance, it will give something for the ingredients to "hold on" to thereby making the fragrance last longer on the skin AND keep your skin from drying out. 👎👎👎 Unfortunately, this is not true. I used to use Vegetable Glycerin in my formulations as a "fixative" and realized that not only did it cause an undesirable separation in my fragrance, the fragrance itself was very dampened. It wasn't until I decided to use IPM as my diluent for my ingredients that I discovered the perfect match for creating fine fragrance AND it moisturizes the skin without causing separation. IPM is also used in Middle Eastern countries to replace alcohol due to the country's alcohol restrictions. And... it works BEAUTIFULLY.😊😊😊😊😊 The ONLY way to anchor a fragrance to the skin so that it will last longer is by using ingredients that are heavier in molecular weight (fixatives) and are designed into the actual formulation of your fragrance. 🌺🌺🌺 If you want a light citrus type fragrance 🍋🍊🍋🍊, then most likely, you will not use a heavy fixative type ingredient since citrus ingredients are extremely volatile and leave the skin quite quickly. Therefore, the best solution would be to spray your fragrance more often. Which, if you are making your own fragrance, you know that it is extremely inexpensive to make your own and spraying more often is not cost prohibitive. 🤗🤗🤗 I hope this was helpful, Sweetie, and that you have a SUPER lovely day! 🍂 🍁🍂 🍁 Lots of loves and huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs being 🌼🌸 SCENT 🌸🌼 your way!
