Mixing the metal colors is cool! I have some copper and some brass washers. How pretty those too would be with copper wire! I so appreciate how you zoom in so we can see the details, eg. at 15:36 & 18:12. Thanks for including the patina step in this video. Yeah, I agree 6.5 ring size would be small. Design a bit too chunky for a pinky ring, IMHO.

I made this ring and it came out lovely, took several tries because the washer wouldn't tighten down, but I finally got it right. Now the washer silver color is coming off and I have someone who wants to buy one but I need your advice on this matter. It was a zinc metal washer which I wonder if that is the problem, I don't know. I'm thinking if I can possible paint the washer because I adore the ring. Look forward to your advice on this. That really does look great! Thanks for sharing. I bought some gorgeous, twisted wire at Home Depot and would love to use it in a project but I have a problem with the end pieces of the wire coming apart and showing all of the strands. ( hope you get the picture). Have you ever used wire like this? I can solder the ends but it doesn't always work on my design. Any ideas?
@makingiteasywithliz8 жыл бұрын
+Gloria Borrero Hi Gloria. I twist my own wire and it's usually only 2 strands, maybe 3 and I too have a bit of a problem with the separating. I really don't have a solution, I just usually frig with it until I can hide the ends into my work somehow. Thanks so much for watching.
@makingiteasywithliz9 жыл бұрын
+Annie Laura thank you for your suggestions. Personally I don't think a flame from a stove is intense enough to soften the wire as it needs to get cherry red with a torch to be annealed enough to make a difference (this is just my opinion and not a fact because I have never tried it). I used a really heavy gauge wire in this ring and a thinner gauge would make it easier to manipulate. I will definitely try your suggestion with the soap and water on the steel wool. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to share your tips.

Great piece.....how do you avoid the washer being loose in the finished piece? Filling the hole with coiling helps, but there is still some play.
@makingiteasywithliz9 жыл бұрын
Dragonfly mock Sometimes you get what you get and a little play is unavoidable, especially when working with the thicker gauges of wire. Try using 14 or 16 gauge wire. My thoughts are you will be able to keep the wire tight throughout, Thanks so much for watching.

I love this ring and all your tutorials! Looking forward to more of your ring tutorials in the near future! Question about the liver of sulfur.. The gel, I understand is not a breathing hazard like the dry LOS. How do you find the gel to work with?
@makingiteasywithliz9 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Vi-Anne. As far as I know, there are no noxious fumes from the liver of sulfur unless you are sensitive to it or sulfur. You only use a drop or two each time and it smells like hard boiled eggs. I would suggest you do more research online so you can take whatever measures to make you comfortable with it. The gel is fabulous...the lump form goes bad and is very expensive. The gel is stable and lasts a very long time.
@TheSweetPetites9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Liz!! I did a bit more research into the gel LOS.. I'm pretty confident that it's safe to use, I bought some yesterday! I'm excited to get all the jewelry I've made antiqued/oxidized!!
@makingiteasywithliz9 жыл бұрын
Right on Vi-Anne. That's the way to do it, all in one shot. What brand did you get? There is one that requires a Tbl. Yikes that's a lot so not very concentrated. Copper takes really fast so you only need a drop or two in a mug of hot tap water. The cooler the water, the more control you have over the tone. Have fun and thanks so much for your support.
@TheSweetPetites9 жыл бұрын

I think as long as the washers are stainless and NOT zinc coated, you could simply either use a torch or put the ring over a gas stove burner to soften the wire enough to wrap it with ease. I'd also like to suggest using soap and water on your steel wool. It keeps those tiny wisps of wool from flaking as much, as well as preventing it from floating into the air to be breathed in!

Would like to know the brand/name of the gel you used. Bead Buddy Patina Solution did a fair job on the washer, but nothing at all to the copper part of my ring. I mixed it according to the direction (1 tbs. gel to 1 cup water). This tutorial is great - and thanks for giving it to all of us fans!
@makingiteasywithliz9 жыл бұрын
Hi Joy, I'm not familiar with Bead Buddy and it sounds like it's not concentrated if you have to use a Tbs, nor very economical. I use and will be selling on my website, XL Gel (Xtended Life). You may find some copper washers won't take a patina real well. Try using a green 3M scrubby pad on it to open the surface. With the XL Gel, you only need 1 or 2 drops per mug of hot tap water. Some washers may take several tries...not sure why, maybe not 100% copper (made in China). For your wire not taking the patina, make sure it's bare copper and not coated. Thanks so much for watching and for your support.
@pdelmercado8 жыл бұрын
You should be putting the washer into the same size dome as the washer, so it just fits inside the lip of the dome. That way it won't scoot around while you are hammering, and you will get the desired shape more quickly and accurately. Nice ring.
@makingiteasywithliz8 жыл бұрын
Even when it slips, you still accomplish it...I find you don't get a sharp curve and have more control over it. Thanks for watching and your comment.

Very cool. I love stamping words or designs on metal. Would it be possible to stamp something on the washer like someone's initials, a design stamp like a bird, or a word such as "love" or "hope"? Love this ring. Will have to try it.
@makingiteasywithliz9 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Beverly for watching. I found this particular washer to be really hard metal. It's worth the try. I'm not sure if annealing with a torch would help. Copper washers would be a bit softer but still very hard but could be annealed to soften it. Let me know how you make out with the stamping.

Hi Elizabeth, I am having so much fun making this ring!!! I have just a few issues that I hope you can help me with?? I can't seem to flatten the wire ends to smooth them out. Also, when I put the rings in the sulpher solution, the base of the ring turns, but the swirled top wire doesn't seem to turn hardly at all? Thanks in advance Sandi Z
@cherylcleveland46258 жыл бұрын
I made this ring yesterday and LOVE it! I would love to make one in silver but can not afford sterling or silver filled. I see on your web site you sell nickel silver. Would this work for this project to make a ring that will last or am I better off sticking with bare copper?
@makingiteasywithliz8 жыл бұрын
Hi Cheryl The nickel wire is stiffer and probably doable in 18 or 20 gauge wire. You might be able to swing the 16g with minimal manipulation as it hardens as you work it. A note about nickel...some people are allergic to it. Thanks so much for watching.

***** Thanks Ema. You could if you want to keep the copper from changing, but I usually don't and will just go over it now and then with the steel wool to polish it. If you do want to coat it, I would suggest either Renaissance Microcrystaline wax, metal sealer that can get wet...a spray lacquer for metal would work. You only need a very light coating.
