I lived in Subic Bay while it was a US Military Installation. It might be a coastal town now but it once was home to 100s of military service people & their families. A city all its own. Managed & operated by US government. Two years before it was GIVEN to the Philippine government 300 new housing was added to the ones already built. Although I am sad by the actions that transpired leading to the closing; admittedly, it was by far the best base I ever lived.

It's a former US military base. When the Americans left, the local base administrators made sure to enforce US driving rules to this day. And they're quite strict about it btw.

OMG You guys finally discovered my hometown! Cleaner than Manila, and local residents are more disciplined in practically everything. Beautiful beaches, great seafood, clean streets, excellent live music scene, with no equal in Manila, and Olongapo City has a quite interesting history as a former U.S. Navy base that goes beyond the stereotyped former red light districts. If you can do so in the future, climb Mt. Balimpuyo in Sta.Rita and you can enjoy a fantastic view of the whole city and Subic Bay area.

Nothing wrong with the red light district. The bars on magsaysay was the only place that served under 21. A bunch of high school students made going out on weekends a ritual.

Weee!!! Lighthouse Marina Resort! A 3-star hotel. My old client owns it -- who also has shipping line business. I also remembered that they have sailing packages and sailing events. I stayed there for 3 days and two nights in one of their expensive rooms (for free) and brought home their souvenir glass mug. They have bar and restaurant in there. I can still remember that I was working facing the bay during breakfast, and seeing 2-3 US Navy ships arrived. Subic used to be US Naval based here in PH that's why you see that big stuff like that one.

Just discovered your VLOG and it brought back fond memories. I am retired from the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Subic (Cubi Point) in the early 1970s for three years. What is interesting is that I earned my private pilot’s license there! Can you believe I payed $8 and $12/hr wet (with fuel, total cost) for a Cessna C-150 depending on the age and ownership of the aircraft. I think the C-172s went for $14 and $16! Flew all over Luzon, much different country than today.

Love love this video❣️❤️❣️❤️❣️ A little background: My family’s originally from Mindanao (father’s side). However, when my parents separated we moved to Olongapo to be near my mother’s family. My siblings and I lived with our grandmother in Santa Rita when our mother married an American and they moved to the U.S. Soon after we followed and living in Omaha, NE (aka the Midwest). My auntie and her family lived in Subic Base (as they called it back then). and I spent most of my weekends on base. Basically my second home and I had such wonderful memories I will forever cherish.. I love your description of Subic being similar to the suburbs in the U.S. especially the driving! I’m happy to hear it’s still a great place and I look forward to coming home someday- hopefully soon! Best of luck with your pilot license and I look forward to your next Subic adventure‼️ BTW loving your BMW - my husband and I both drive BMWs.

Mike and Neely, Subic is truly so different now compared to when I was their extracting the volcanic ashes on US Naval Base with a group of construction team call "Seabees". We were called upon to clear the roads, runways and damage buildings. The reason why the road rules there are so much different compared to other place, because they embraced or kept the American's road law to remain in place in the Naval base there. Thanks for sharing the great footage of the area. God bless

I was in Subic Bay back in the 80's with the Navy. Other than some newer buildings, still looks the same. There's an island in the middle of the bay called Grande Island. Oh my goodness! I never would've guessed that my hometown would be featured in your channel. You guys have no idea how excited I am that you guys get to visit and experience it. It made me miss my childhood home even more. Last time I was there was 2018. So many things have changed since then. A lot of those resorts and hotels weren't yet there when I was growing up. And even now I would consider the hotel you've shown to be expensive. I can't recommend any places to see because so much have changed. I'm sure some places I knew have been closed, and there's new businesses being built everyday. And yes, driving there is very different than Manila, and yes, Subic Bay area used to be a US Naval station, so the road design and feel is American. You can still see some buildings (barracks) from that time still standing there. They're converted to hotels and offices. Thanks for sharing my home with the world! I hope you guys come back and really experience it. There's a lot to see and experience.

Great to see you both exploring Subic Bay I met my wonderful Filipina wife there in 1986 and married her there at the Colomban Church on Magsaysay drive in 1988. I served aboard the USS Midway that frequently stopped in Subic Bay. Much has changed since I was there when it was a military base please check out Grande Island in the bay it is beautiful, also I hear there are zip lines near where I did my jungle survival training near cubi point. We have not been back but so so want to go. Until then we can re-visit through you two. Enjoy and Merry Christmas.

Wow! Miss that place so much. Lighthouse very memorable for me. So much to explore. You can go to "pamulaklakin" its a running stream from the mountain. That's after the golf course. From there you pass thru el kabayo going to "jest" where there is a mini zoo and jungle survival demo. From there you can go straight to were the huge fruit bats. About a meter long. And then if you want to go for a swim in the beach you go down to all hands or officers beach. That's beside the airport. There is also an island off the mainland its Grande Island. I don't know if they still do but along the Lighthouse road they use to rent out jetskis. They also do dive tours for world War 2 sunken ships.

Would be wild to see you two sailing? Or how about taking one of the outriggers out for a spin :-)) Wonder if you could do a week long island hoping adventure to lesser known remote islands on a sailboat, that would be something!!

Try to visit the former Subic Naval base by the Americans and you’ll be surprise more. You can also drive up North to Botolan, Palauig, part of Iba the capital of Zambales and enjoy the ocean along the way up to Bolinao. Thank you Mike & Nelly for showing us this part of Subic that I have never seen in my lifetime. Cheers from 🇦🇺 to 🇦🇹 & 🇵🇭!!

Whenever we go to Subic, we always at Camayan Beach resort. Subic is also very close to Bataan wherein there’s a lot of nice beach resort. My suggestion to you guys is visit Mt Samar National Shrine, a one and a half drive from Subic.

I do have memories of Subic Bay back in 1985-87 when I was stationed aboard the USS Midway CV-41. I remember crossing the bridge over "Sh*t" river and going into all of the bars in Olongopo City. And going out on a different date each night with a bar girl and drinking a large pitcher of "Mojo" and eating a chicken feet on a stick. Damn! I do missed them days & those were the times.

My dad’s last tour of duty was in the Philippines from 1985-1988. We made it our home during that time. In fact when the Midway came into port it was a big deal. Off-base night life was crowded. Stay away from the bar girls next time. That’s a good way to spread disease.

Seeing you guys back by a bay that is not Manila bay reminded me so much of the time when you guys were stranded back in Siargao. After seeing your hectic journey getting back to Makati, the relief I felt for and with the both you was immense haha. That was a couple of months ago... A true testament that moments regardless of whether good or bad will pass by, and it's up to you to make everything you want happen. Take care and enjoy!!! :)

Some corrections: There is Subic Town, a municipality in Zambales and there is Subic Bay Freeport Zone. Two different places. The one you visited is inside Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ). It is a special economic zone and freeport area covering portions of Olongapo City and the towns of Subic in Zambales and Morong and Hermosa in Bataan. Outside that SBFZ gate (from the video @ VSNRY) is Olongapo City. SBMA (Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority) is the government agency tasked to run the Freeport zone.
