Home Depot has a hack for this right now. I got the saw and 2 batteries for $150. If you add this kit plus 2 additional batteries (free) to your cart it reduces it to $150 for the saw and batteries and the additional batteries are $99. Total is $250 and then you can return the additional batteries which makes the saw kit for only $150. Bargain for 2 5ah batteries and the saw!

OK anyone wondering if this saw is worth buying, stop 2nd guessing this saw , I own 3 personally and 4 of my employees have also purchased their own, I'm not exaggerating this saw in my opinion is better than every corded saw I own and I have 14 corded saws, skill, bosch, milwaukee, dewalt and 1 makita hypoid, I haven't used any of my other saws as soon as there was enough of these saws on our jobsite, I did do a few modifications , I drilled a tiny hole in the safety thumb button and slid a 7/16 crown staple into the hole then clipped off any extra material this allows us to use this saw in any position, 1 more thing any of you crazy framers out there that reverse cut into lumber ie. backing the saw into the wood on a bevel , and have maybe experienced that extremely dangerous kick back from inserting into the wood to fast or the wood shifting, this saw can do those reverse cuts easily, the power is amazing, the blade brake is weird the first day you use it but becomes a godsend, we pin our guards most of the time ( also a modification we do to all saws is drill through the blade guard near the BL logo high enough to miss the blade by 1/4 inch and insert an 8 penny galvanized nail into the hole bend it over on the back side and it slides back and forth about 3/8's of an inch to allow for a secure guard pin and release) my stress of my guys pinning guards and cutting then lowering the saw to a table floor or near their leg or whatever has nearly disappeared because of the quick blade brake absolutely love that feature, 1 last modification I did to better the saw was I used a small triangle file and put every 1 degree increments on the bevel gauge , it took 15 minutes to do this on each saw but increased the accuracy of bevel cuts for my apprentice carpenters. If you use worm drive saws buy this saw you will love it. 1 draw back, yep there is 1. the retractable saw guard is not magnesium and is fragile 1 of my saws took a 6ft drop and it bent and cracked the guard at the arbor point, I firmly grasped the guard and forced it straight again and haven't had a problem with it but I know if that saw gets dropped too many more times that guard is gonna break, I have some saws that have withstood 20 ft drops this saw I don't think would survive that abuse but time will tell, , also my 8 employees have been using these saws for 8 months now and my profit on projects has gone up absolutely a game changer.

worm-drive is nice for plywood because the weight of the saw lays on the board but for cutting 2x4 or so it feels to top heavy.and stressed the wrist

Just to add to the worm drive vs side winder debate, I would like to add a non-conventional test that put me in the sidewinder camp fully. I spent years working the cut table for steel and aluminum construction. I was cutting long angles on corrugated aluminum sheets that I would stack up to 3/8" with metal cutting blades. First, i must address the need to stack the material 3 sheets thick, volume production of large structures with a single cut table feeding up to 10 install crews called for mass output. Second, because it was aluminum, i ended up switching to more of a ripper blade because the closeness of most metal blade teeth eventually caused gum up in between the teeth due to the softness of the aluminum. These were hardcore, loud and rough cuts. Every worm drive i used, from multiple high-end manufacturers, ended up burning out the motor. The cheaper sidewinder designs stood the test of time. I could not kill the DeWalt and Makita sidewinders that I used over the period of 2 years. I went through a lot of blades but the sidewinders could hold up to the stress and constant power needed while the worm drives would not last more than a day without complete motor failure. While i understand that this is not a typical wood cutting environment, it does show the difference in the simplistic engineering of the sidewinder vs the worm drive and its potential longevity. I hope this helps some people.
@AndrewBrowner
@AndrewBrowner 6 жыл бұрын
they wouldnt last a day? id have to call BS on that and youd certaintly get a warranty replacement from my understanding worm drives have lower speed and more torque compared to sidewinders which would make them ideal for that.. i havent chosen a side yet i think id prefer a sidewinder with the blade on the left but thats not an option for some reason..

Very impressive. I was wondering how these twin 18 volt cordless machines perform compared to a 36 volt tool. It was only near the end I learned the batteries were 5 amp hour. Makita has done well using a soft start. I think they listened to me. I would like to see cordless plate compactors. This of coarse well be bigger heavier batteries.

Great review Rob. I have a few of both the sidewinder and worm saws. My new Bosch (corded) runs and feels great. I also have the heavy duty Milwaukee worm and two Skil (7 1/4- 8+) all used daily and together. One of my absolute favorite features of each of these worm drives as measured against all of my sidewinders is never really mentioned. I'm 6`1`` and without the wormhole drive I can barley reach across a whole sheet of plywood, 48 inches, with a sidewinder, and if I do reach for it, I can only see the back side of the cut or blade. Worm drives...no problem, easy reach looking at the blade the whole time. If your working the bench knocking out all the cut work, this is a tremendous advantage. I listen to all your reviews and have taken your recommendations many times. Just wanted to add another PLUS for worm drivers!!

This is without a doubt the best cordless saw out now. I guess Makita decided to do it right and put the blade on the left side like every saw should be. Those lame sidewinders and other saws with blades on the right are only good for lefties. I can't believe it took this long for someone to come out with a worm drive style saw. I just can't get myself to pay $360 for this saw, even though its the best one, while my worm drive is trucking along just fine. Have had it for about 15 years now.

Ryan I started with a side saw and switched to a worm drive. The difference was big, at least for me. The worm drive has much more torque and it's much easier to cut a straight line with it. Maybe that's because it's a heavier saw, I dunno, but I definitely find worm drives to be superior. Except for the weight. That part sucks.

My aging Makita 18v sidewinder bogs down and devours batteries like no tomorrow. I suspect the brushes are shot, but it was always kind of anemic even right out of the box. I knew it was time to go brushless and with the power of twin battery packs, it was a no brainer this was the way to go. I just ordered the bare tool version from Ebay for less than $160 bucks and can't wait to get it so I can rip through some shit! Wish I had it last week when I was slicing through 1/2" ply and 2x4s to build hurricane panels.

I really like your reviews and always lean something. Thank you for doing this for us. I hope I could share my thoughts about this review. Most west coast framers use these saws because they are laid out in such a way as to make it possible for routine work to be done with minimal measuring and marking, without sacrificing accuracy. Their weight and power allows you to cut most dimensional lumber on the ground and because the blade is on the left, it's very safe for this type of production and field framing. So if you wanted to really give a review on a framing saw: it would be nice if you used it like one rather then using it like and then comparing it to a east coast saw. If you were cross cutting dimensional lumber, it would be done on the ground with the long end supported a little off the ground with your left foot. I started on the east coast but moved west and learned west coast framing. Thank you

So I put my Milwaukee 7.25 fuel with 9ah battery into overload today and ran to the garage to get my old Skill worm drive saw. By the time I got back to the deck it came out of overload then the battery was dead had to switch batteries and still didn't use the skill saw. I bound and stopped the saw several times and the saw was definitely struggling on the pressure treated 2x12s. The blade in my opinion had about 50 to 30% of life left. I was cutting 2x12 stringers 4 of them at 10 feet in length 7 7/8 by 10 inches. I think its time to buy a new saw, could you guys do the same test between the flexvolt and this saw or reply with your opinion between these two saws if you had to do the same job. I'm also surprised Milwaukee hasn't came out with a new version of its 7.25 or rear handle. I just saw a instagram post Dewalt is coming out with a rear handle. I would leave the milwaukee battery platform for a better circ saw just not sure what platform.

dewalt isnt gonna be much if any improvement over the mikwuakee.. the tech just isnt there for the cost yet.. this makita looks like itll have better luck im getting along good with the milwakee but when i rip cut lumber it does over heat in a hurry, couple spots on the handle get surprisingly hot.. which is weird because you wouldnt expect there to be any electronic switching on a constant speed saw

I’ve had it do the safety shutoff and at times totally shutting off where I have to remove the battery and press the switch a few times to get it to start again. I recently was at home depot and came across this makita saw combo for 175! Yes 175$$$. No brainer snagged it. I love the Milwaukee for dry lumber and 2x4 cuts or carrying up a ladder etc. the makita is the brute. Really impressive and you can find it now for 250-175 on clearance aisles during the year.

60 years in the trades and I know Makita makes lifetime tools. The trade off is they're heavier than their competition. Another opinion; West coast carpenters like the worm drive because it allows them to cut using their foot for a saw horse, and I'm not sure they know the difference.

I have this exact same saw. I love it, but I wish it would blow it's sawdust to the side instead of behind it. It's kind of annoying to keep blowing sawdust out of the saw itself and the batteries.

There is a rubber plug on the right side, just in front of the top handle for vacuum hose setup. The sawdust shooting out at me was the first negative thing i noticed. I just bought this saw days ago xsr01z. Wondering what the z on the end of the model number means. Did not know about the plug until i noticed it on the box. Incredibly smooth fast cutting.

have tested a wormdrive and i got sold after the first few inches i cut with it ^_^ Now i have the trouble finding the site that ship to europe :D have used to sidewinders and own 2 myself (corded &uncorded) but and 199$ + shipment for the makita is way cheaper then buying the equal sidewinder useing double 18v batteries here even if geting the baretool model only =) the 3th hand here always adds 50% more to the pricetag and if talking nicely to the companysellers at the toolshop and get 24% off the price its still alot money you have too give (and they still wonder why the importrate is so high here) hahaha ^_^

Although this question is not so relevant to this double battery Makita, I suppose it could still apply for some people. I want to convert a couple of Makita 18V tools to use my line of 18V Ridgid batteries. I have already done this with success for an old style Milwaukee sawsall and older 18V drill and these work great with 4AH Ridgid batteries. My issue with Makita is if there is any electronic reason I would have to do something to conform to their STAR system so I could NOT adapt other 18V batteries to Makita? I can do the physical adapter OK, but don't know about an electronics I would have to use for full functionality. Any ideas?Will the Makita tools work with a simple 18V connection like my old Milwaukee and 18V Dewalt tools will? I have not purchased any STAR Makita tool yet to test this myself.

Older batteries (non star) are compatible with newer tools but not the other way around. You should be good to create an adapter.

Question -- I just bought this Makita rear handle circular saw and it doesn't slide over material for crap , that grayish coating on the magnesium base plate makes my saw really hard to push , I mean its basically unusable, I only use it about 6 times and had to switch back to my Dewalt. I tried it on 2x10s and some plywood and the plywood actually put a few deep scratches into the base plate, any idea what's wrong with it ??

I have used this exact saw and never had any issue with it running across the wood. I have had an issue with my other 18v Makita saw, but it has to do with the guard not pivoting up like it needs to do on certain cuts, but this is due to setting the saw cut depth too deep. Raising the cut depth alleviates this issue.

I'll tell you from experience don't over discharge your makita batteries. If they're dying go ahead and put them on the charger. If you over discharge them they are unable to recharge.

I thought Makita batteries had a computer chip in the "star" batteries, that keep the batteries from over discharge, over heating of tool, and over charging. At least that is Makita's clam.

Bosch uses new ""Core"" Panasonic-Sanyo NCR20700B 4250mAh Li-ion Rechargeable Battery they have most power and run time aloud in USA by LI-ion volume per bat..""TESLA battery"" . If Makita will start using these barrettes no doubt the 36v line will be the best and without competition. Ether in run time ,quality and performance. it will not be beat ,, volts do not mean power their are a lot of variables, a proper motor power balance is most important. Milwaukee does a good job of this with there 18v line but Makita just out preforms and devolt depend on volts to do the job , __More volts less amps means less battery live circles thats Makitas and Boschs game dependability in the long run its better to have 18 volt 9 amps X 2 36 volts 10 amps (and with Sanyo NCR20700B it wold be possible.. power wise it wold be equivalent 120v and should run for 3 hours. www.coptool.com/bosch-core18v-6-3ah-power-9-0ah/

yes I understand that amps don't x up . I was talking about amps in power not hours. as I was saying people look at the numbers thinking more is better. i was saying with Sanyo NCR20700B it wold be like having 10 amp in power ,(it's possible to get more but I don't think companies will put out for 15 amp Brussels motors and won't want to stress the cells . I think 36v with 10 amps is the ticket with veritable transfer it would be more powerful because of output potential of 15 amps draw on cells then any cordless saw I know off. Makita saw is ready for the new batterys Bocsh has new batterys but is lacking in fine tools on the US market.

HAY Rob, quick question the new Bosch Core battery ,,is it the same outside diameter as the older batteries? (Reason i am asking I am considering buying the Makita 18X2 trimmer now and the brushed one handed chainsaw for liming both batteries are staked next to each other - ones the new cell barrettes get released i am assuming in 2018 most likely 2019 would the Makita 18X2 lineup of tools be backward compatible with the new barrettes.) the new cells are longer with wold make the barrettes wider will they still fit in the X2 platform ? ...what are your thoughts if you get a chance to check the Core 18 Barrettes please let us know the size difference between them and the older 18 batteries . Thanx
