Finally got my hands on a Makita 40v Impact Wrench! Let's compare it to the 18v equivalent, the Makita LXT DTW300. Might as well chuck in the 40v Makita Impact Driver and a Milwaukee for good measure.

@Tools & Stuff, Thanks for the thorough review between the 18V and 40V Makita impact wrenches. I agree with you that there's so many people with 18V LXT tools and such a expansive line that the LXT line isn't going away any time soon. This does give Makita users a upgrade path for those tools that can make sense to go 40V like the saws, outdoor power equipment, rotary hammer drills and vacuums. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

I look at it this way. They are still making the brushed 18v LXT motor models for cheaper options, so they would have to start phasing those out long before they start phasing out the 18v brushless LXT models (in theory) It’s a long long ways away before we ever need to worry about it. IMO

Impact wrench aren’t meant to drive fasteners quickly. They have a gear reduction to increase torque even more so when used in a 12v platform.

Impact drivers have a drive reduction too tho
@zack6892
@zack6892 3 жыл бұрын
@@brettwalkom948 well yeah every drill operates with a certain reduction geared at their task. My point is impact wrenches aren't made to set fasteners all day as fast as possible. They are made for higher torque application and they will last much longer then most impact drivers at high torque. The impact wrench would be slower no matter what even if driving 1" fasteners a good 12v impact driver would probably beat a high torque impact wrench but that doesn't mean the 12v is better.

They're close enough to convince me that the 40-volt uses a step down. That's not a bad thing, that allows the battery to be more flexible. It gives overhead for things like 10 inch saws and even jack hammers in x2, while not limiting itself to only big tools like Milwaukee Mx has. And that since it's kind of brilliant, but in another sense they lock themselves into bigger and bigger batteries since running 10 cells in a series to attain your voltage goal means will never carry more amp hours than a single cell

The way i see it, 40v has better runtime over 18v. It's just hard justifying sticking with 18v other than the lower cost....I think Makita needs to rethink 18v possibly making them more subcompact. This way you can set 18v apart from 40v other than cost of course.

In theory if that was the only difference, then yes. But if it runs cooler, you can pull some extra performance out of the 40v and end up in the same temperature. And since this is what we see performance wise, I assume they do just that. In fact your comment is what made me think about this. In theory they should have the same performance. But you do need twice the amps on a 18v system to get the same power so definitely sounds like the limit is thermal. I don't own either of these. This is just my guess.

Hey makita, make some 80 volt tools like snowblower etc with 2 40 volt batteries like you did with the 36 volt lineup please. Love my 36 volt stuff that I can just use all my 18 volt batteries. I might go to the 40 volt line soon.

Sir, might you tell me when I can expect the 40 volt over here in the colonies? ... 🤔😀😃😄😀😂🤣 Relax people and give this chap a break! FYI, just got my XPH12 back from the Makita repair center in New Jersey, USA, and they included a XGT 40:volt brochure in the box! This might be a sign that it will be anytime now, kiddies! 😁 Fixed under warranty and drill runs like new! New Jersey facility is great! Your videos are great! Your ‘split views’ of the tools going head to head are banging! Thanks for your efforts! Cheers Mate! 👍👍👍👍👍👍😁✌🏻👏🏻🥇

I bought into Makita LXT waaaaaaay after Metabo 20700/21700 and Bosch 20700/21700. In every case: Makita with even a 1 row 18650 slim pack eats Metabo and Bosch’s 21700 lunch. I don’t know how the 4ah batteries are wired, but I know that the 36v 2.5ah is the 5ah 18v but wired in series. Technically, in this case, the 36v is already at a disadvantage. I’m impressed that the XGT kicks a little harder. The motor, hammer and gear train are the limiting factor (hence why the impact driver and drills are no better than the 18v) and I just wasn’t expecting that.

Nice videos. Just found your channel and it’s good to have a reviewer from this hemisphere (I’m in OZ). I have a general question. My Makita gear is getting on a bit and I’m wanting to upgrade with a combo kit. Main needs are good battery life and power ration. Tools would be circ saw, grinder and impact and hammer drills. Which kit would you recommend? FYI I run a handyman business so they will get a bit of work but nothing like a tradie. Looking for best bang for buck

For once I'm jealous of you Brits and Aussies and New Zealanders , getting the Makita new 36/40vmax stuff first! Makita USA Just announced the USA 40v/80v max at last! ( its on their KZbin channel.) Today I am learning what a coach screw is ! We call those Lag Bolts in the USA. Just so folks know these would be a poor choice for anything that doesn't use a socket or a solid 1 pc driving bit that can attach to the square drive. (The more adaptors you put onto an impact the more power you lose) This tool is really made for sockets, like for lag bolts (Coach screws) ,or bolts and nuts. I would use a hex female impact for driving things that need screwdriver type bits, (like the batten screws) Stay away from stacking adaptors and you will have more power to drive fastners better. Nice Video !

The XGT impact driver has bigger gears, a bigger bit collet, a bigger fan and so on for a bigger price of $35 over the XDT16. The compact impact wrenches are virtually the same, but the xgt comes at a premium of $90 over the LXT version. :0 You can buy the drill+the impact driver with a charger and two batteries for $449. The impact wrench with the same two batteries and charger = ...drum roll please...$469. Economy of scale is massive.
