Power management in the tool, the tool won’t draw more than what’s determined by the on board controller. Milw.. just don’t have power management. Festool and Panasonic is the only that does what Makita do, only even slightly better. Makita has stated run time as the most important feature of its 40V Max.

There are two C ratings associated with lithium cells, charge and discharge. If they've fitted the smaller packs with higher C rated discharge cells, that'll explain why the smaller packs are packing such a punch.

Notes on batteries. Current 4Ah 21700 cells (Samsung -40T) don’t deliver power as consistently as the -30T or the available 2.0/2.5Ah 18650 cells (e.g. Samsung -20R, 25R, 20S, 25S) this makes batteries using 21700-30T cells (3.0 & 6.O “high output” type) the ones that can deliver the most power, while those using -40T cells and 18650 (20R/25R) cells a half step behind, unless you stack 3+ rows of them as in the M18 9.0Ah and the Makita 40V 5.0. I don’t know if any batteries are currently using the newest generation of cells (e.g. Samsung 18650-20S/25S), but those should be able to deliver more power as well. It’s possible these are what are used in the Makita 40V 2.5 and/or 5.0, and perhaps AEG/Ridgid’s new “Maximum output” batteries, but I don’t have any confirmation of that. That aside, I wouldn’t consider any RPM differences or slight drops in RPM with batteries freshly charged batteries to be a useful indicator as much of that can be due to differences in individual cells, wear level, and charge voltage. It also depends on how the charger indicates the battery is “full” and whether it continues to trickle charge after indicating “full”. It might be a useful indicator if all batteries have been charged fewer than about 20 times, were all charged on the exact same charger (or at least exact same model), and were all removed from charging approximately the same number of minutes after the charger showed full. A more useful test would be to test them after using the battery for some short (~30 second) light/medium duty task, which should help mitigate any differences in individual cell max voltage and charger voltage differences.

One issue with the big three (Milwaukee, Makita and Dewalt) having all of these different physical sizes of batteries is that they’re also still artificially marking them up to make combo kits and free battery giveaway promotions look like a “great deal”. So that puts the customer at a stalemate because whichever bundle or promo doesn’t include the particular physical size they require for their personal needs then they will likely forego making a purchase until “the right time” (which may be never).

I think that the larger capacity batteries make sense for tools such as the split-shaft unit which drains the 2.5Ah pretty quickly. I would be interested to know if the 5Ah provides a notable gain in runtime over 2x2.5Ah on high drain tools due to the reduced loading on the individual cells.

Regarding the saw Id almost think Id like the big 5.0, as the workpiece is supporting the tool, mostly, and it clearly had an edge in your test. Great review. I have never understood why Milwaukee and DeWalt ever thought giant batteries on hand tools was a good idea the 2.5 ah seems the best choice. 18volt x 2 always seemed like the best idea in most cases and I was often bewildered by reviewers hostility to this. Not sure in this case why Makita have not made a compact size 2.5 or 3.0 ah 18 volt battery yet (Hikoki have one). Also: If the best battery is the 2.5 ah and the 5ah is just two of them for extra run time applications; why not make batteries where the bottom of the battery is a battery mount similar to that on the tool so that one could just run them in series? And Makita: Stick vac and nail gun soon please

You say that as if Milwaukee and Dewalt have completely dropped small batteries from their lineups, when that's definitely not the case. Mils makes a compact 3Ah pack not much bigger than their older 2.0s but can provide the output of their 5.0. Dewalt makes a compact 4.0 that's similarly just a bit bigger than the 1P 18650 and has the output of their 2P 18650 pack. That's the big benefit of 21700s, much more power with not that much bigger packages. Whereas Makita can't do that, not without making those batts incompatible with the 18Vx2 tools. That has effectively caused Makita's battery tech in 18V stagnate, and hindered the potential for improvement in many of their tools. And most reviewers don't like the 18Vx2 because other companies have proven they can make the same power in a single pack that still runs on their 18v/20v lines. I'd even go as far to say that instead of praising it as the be all, end all solution, Makita fans should accept that 18Vx2 was an okay implementation of a really good idea that needs improvement, and essentially demand Makita do better on future implementations. Namely, clearance to expand pack sizes on the x2 tools moving forward, and not have a repeat of falling behind like they did with the 21700 proliferation in the market.

"Fresh off the charger" performance advantage is likely due to temperature. Li-Ion batteries have an "ideal" temperature range for optimal current draw, and part of what the chargers do is condition the batteries by keeping them at a nominal temperature to receive max charge rate, which also likely means optimal discharge rate. The ones that sit around are cooler and will yield less performance.

So basically 2.0ah - no need to purchase 2.5ah - lightweight with moderate load (drills, circular saws, sawzall, bandsaw, etc.) 4.0ah - stationary tools with minimal load, needing longer run time (lights, radios, fans) 5.0ah - heavy battery for heavy load (mitre saw, table saw, sds hammer drills, and all day cutting with circular saws) Am i thinking that correctly? The video suggests and shows that more AH doesnt always mean more power. However im curios to know how the run times correspond. Do 2x 2.5ah last longer than a 5? Since the 4 produces less power does it potentially last longer than a 5 on certain tools?

@nozzlepie 3 жыл бұрын
My guess would be that the high end 21700 are going to higher cost devices (cars etc) rather than 18650, so the comparitive current draw of the 21700 is lower. I would guess Makita have a ton of 2Ah 18650 that was for the 18V 4Ah that seemed most common in kits. So they can use up cells they've contracted to buy in the new line too. Probably healps with availability too. When I've been looking for batteries the 18V 5Ah is always the best Wh/£. Deffo agree on the 2.5Ah 40V being the way to go. I have 4x5Ah and 2x3Ah for my 36V split shaft brushcutter, and with 4 chargers that's continuous use.

@@robertrada6040 Good joke. Home Depot's not interested in selling Makita's XGT line in store, for a few reasons. Biggest being that they're trying to push Milwaukee as their premium brand, second biggest being XGT doesn't have the potential audience to justify carrying them in store, part of which is because of the price premium and the limited offerings right now. No, the 2.0 is currently being paired with the stick vac, which realistically doesn't need the bigger batts. Major reason I can see for this is likely 2Ah cells being available pretty cheaply, relative to even 2.5Ah cells, which would allow Makita offer it for a lower price than they could with 2.5s and still profit.

Heard a rumor that Makita will be offering the 40V 8Ah packs--is that true? Basically, 20 of them 21700's 10S/2P for very long run times. I have a Makita 36V X2 with two 5 amp hour batteries and besides having to put two batteries in (Waaaaaa!) if Makita stops at 5Ah then--they have achieved nothing. Heck, they can always use 26650 cells if they want taller, more capacity but same width with the 18V line. :D My next move won't be to 40V, it will be a few years when the Tesla 4680 cells (9Ah) become available--very high C rate (amp ability) and will last at least 5 to 10 times as long as Li-Mn so the battery will outlast the tool. Either that or LiFePO4 cells like DeWalt used back in 2006 (36V max) I still use that LiFePO4 battery (made by A123 Systems) 15 years later on my circ saw and recip saw. I own Makita and they do well with battery protection but if the 40V Max holds at 5Ah--same as the 36V X2 I wonder what is the point? OK, I can see using two of them for higher power...table saws and jack hammers but I like to use my 18V impact driver with the 2.5Ah battery to make it very compact/light weight--can't do that with the 40V Max. Maybe Makita is restricted on the 21700's so the 8Ah pack will have to wait?

@@user-fo2vr5qz2l I'm with you there, my 18V Makita drills/impacts with the 5Ah packs work very well with great run time. I might get the 2.5Ah just to lighten it up and make it more compact. I'm actually going even more compact with a 10.8V oscillating saw with 2Ah battery to fit it in tighter spaces, cut weight and be much more comfortable. The giant 40V 2.5Ah oscillating saw is too heavy, too bulky and would be too fatiguing to use so I'm going the other way. My view is the 40V is for high power/ultra long runtime tools (outdoor power equipment, table saws, jack hammers etc.) so I would want monster batteries for that. A nice self propelled mwer 80V max with 8Ah packs would rock out there as would a big chainsaw and a invertor for camping. Hope that Makita will roll out the 8Ah 40V packs soon, if they don't... somebody else will but I like Makita's battery management/thermal sensing and conservaive charging votages for longevity. Probably cheaper to produce. Though, with other brands, the lower the Ah rating for the physical size of the battery, the higher discharge it can handle. Lower capacity cells offer typically higher discharge rates. This doesn’t matter with Makita, as they have power management features that limit how mych power many of their tools can draw.

Recharge faster. Batterypack contact current limit IS the limit here. It heats less due to its resistance at lower currents. It's agnostic to voltage. Simpler chargers - due to the same reason. Motors can be better controlled speed wise. Higher torque at high speed needs more voltage, due to the motor's reactance, which adds to resistance, forming overall impedance. The reactance part is proportional to the speed of the motor, i.e. frequency. I bet this is the reason why the new UC004G has fine speed regulation, whereas its predecessors hadn't.

I really don't understand how 40(36 volts) at lets say 4 ah, is going to have any significant performance difference thanan 18 volt 8ah battery will provide. It's literally just doubling the voltage and halfing the amps and using bigger cells, and they have to make all the batteries bigger than their 18 volt counterparts. Meanwhile, their competition, Dewalt, uses a 60 volt flexvolt which is backward compatible and legitimately contains more cells than what an 18/36 volt battery does. While their other competition, Milwaukee FUEL, is able to keep outperform Makita 40 volt tools, e.g. their impact driver, with their 18 volt Fuel. I like Makita, but this just seems like 90% marketing wank to sell a new battery platform. The fact that they are all offering 12 volt tool lines that can perform as well as(or outperform) some 18 volt tools is further proof to me playing voltage games is less important than improved motors and electronics.

Theoretically, higher voltage tools don't deal with as much transmission losses. However, running at a lower amperage also allows for smaller conductors and motors to do the same work, and heat is tied to amperage, so fewer amps discharged means less heat at the batteries, which can mean more stable power delivery.
