I have used this saw several times a week for 18 months each day go8ng through 6 to 8 batteries. I have worn out one bar. It made a grinding noise from the gear box and was repaired under warranty. I just absolutely love it and it has cut up some big trees.

Bought this one a few months ago along with 4 5ah batteries. It is great for me as I never used a chainsaw before. No stinky fuel mix, no sparkplug, no fumes, little noise. You have to let the weight of the saw do the cutting as it will trigger protection if you push it too hard. It can do something like 20-30 minutes of continuous runtime on a pair of 5ah that will charge up in an hour or so. The charge time is almost double if the battery is hot. It will charge the 5ah in 50 minutes when cold, and in 90 minutes if it was used intensely. It is a reason why the charger has the fans. If you use it you will most likely go close to an hour of use as you position stuff, carry. You will rarely get to run the saw continuously from full to empty without having breaks. So get two pairs of batteries to do some significant work.

I've had this saw now for about 3yrs, For most of that time I've been working in a workshop on film productions so have made a lot of use of it due to either having to quickly go out to the yard to chop off a few bits of timber for a job or use it to shape something in the workshop, Something a corded saw would quickly become painful or dangerous to use and a petrol one would become obnoxious. As with all battery-powered tools it has its limitations but I've come to rely on it as a get-out-of-jail-free card for more jobs than I can count. It's been amazing and one of my go-to tools. Combined with my Makita grinder with a carving or shaping tool attachment there's been nothing I haven't been able to tackle so far. One of my favourite tool purchases!

Might be that the 36V doesn't have the torque, but it cuts twice as fast as the others without much force applied.. so...I think I can live with that :D

I got the 16 inch it is a great saw, I am a 5'2 45kg lady with back problems and I can use this easily I had a lot of trees come down in the storm recently and I have cut up so much wood with this it has cut so far up to 27cm thick turpentine logs but that does use the batteries up fast I run it with 6 amps I will get some spare batteries so I can rotate them on the charger but they do charge quick. It paid for itself in a day the amount of trunks branches and logs I cut with this would have cost me a thousand or more to have someone cut for me. I have to sharpen up the chain and get a couple of spares I have a lot of work still to do I will see if it can get through the monster tree trunk I think it will go through it a couple of times and need recharging just as long as I can cut this tree up. For what this saw is and I put it to work it is excellent. I have a 50cc petrol chainsaw in the garage and it is heavier I havnt needed to use it yet.

Just got mine and it is muh new favorite tool. Should have gotten it way sooner. Should have switched to Makita way sooner. Although their manuals are very poor. I don't think the actual motor is less powerful than on the predecessor, it's just the overload protection is more sensitive. Cuts in sooner. Which is a bit annoying and I have not even done any actual tree work yet, only shredded waste boards for firewood. One thing, the toolless chain cover and tightening mechanism seem to work more fiddly than I remember from the UC4xxx series of corded electrical chain saws. And definitely more fiddly than nuts and bolts. I can see why people prefer the 355 becaus of that feature. Ideally it should just have a spanner mount so you always have the tool along with the saw, not a new idea by any stretch. Add a protected file mount while you're at it.

Yeah no, it's the opposite case. Comparing similarly sized electric and combustion engines, the electric one will always produce far more torque in the end. ICE engines generate torque through rotational mass, and only make torque at high RPM and they get work done via horsepower. However cutting tools tend to be bogged down, so it's favorable to use a motor that produces torque at low or no rpm (ie: electric) Electric = Torquey Combustion = Horsey.

Comparable 35v Stihl use their own Stihl chains that are narrower than 'standard' and blunt quicker. Stihl battery compartment fills up with water when it's raining (no drain hole). Overall you can't beat the Japanese designed Makita for cordless experience and quality. IMO.

@Cmpunmu3

well, my new batteries felt down from four bars to one bar after cutting a birch of approx 15cm diametre. we cut about 10-12 discs of it approx 5cm thick. it worked after that for a while also to cut something like several 5cm thick branches. but did not died out. so i guess it is ok. but what can you expect really from such a powerful machine? it is good enough if it lasts for about 20 minutes, i guess

I would recomend having 4, 6 amp makita batteries and the fast dual charger keep 2 charged so you don't run your batteries flat. The batteries will last years longer if you don't run them all the way down before re charging the saw will flash a warning when batteries are getting low thats when I swap them out. So far with 6 amps I havn't managed to stall the saw. Use a good quality sharp chain too keep it sharp it will put less strain on the motor and less work for the batteries.

I'm curious why the battery model skin only ($499AUD) is 2 1/2 times the price of the AC model ($199AUD). Seems to me now the tool companies have us all addicted to the lithium drug they've got us by the short and curlys. So like any honest drug dealer the price goes up.

@@tmarinelic I don't know what shit batteries you use, clearly not lithium-ion or any made in the last 5 years. A Makita battery, or one from any of the big brands will last a year and barely lose any charge. And besides, I think they wanted to know how long you can use the tool on one charge.

@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Hi, thanks for your answer. I use genuine Makita lxt18v 3.0ah batteries, one 3 months old and other has 16 months now. I have contacted my Makita supplier and send him the first one, as I have a good range of Makita outdoor machines purchased as well and he returned it as fully in working order. The new one(with LEDs) behaves exactly the same. The longevity of using the tools in my and alike cases therefore depends: if I charged them in last couple of days my Makita 18v hedge trimmer, 18v screwdriver, 18v vacuum handheld and 36v olive shaker performances are good. But I can clearly see a drop even without led lamps checking on battery itself or at the adapter on olive shaker's case. For example I just got 3 hours and 50 min of work with Makita36v olive shaker (I do this for a living in November) if I charge batteries daily and a 90min work duration when charged and left about a fourthnight ago which I did on the start of the harvesting season. Greetings, Tomi

The electric and the fuel powered one might have their cutting chains being blunt as what I see. They wear out over time. Sometimes it takes a skill or two to really sharpen it back again. If the cutting chain is blunt, obviously it will be unproductive and waste of energy

your chain tension seems to be set a little bit too tight. it'll affect how long your bar and chain last and also affects power output of any chainsaw. it should just spring back to the bar with just a tiny bit of slack.
