Did Makita really make a difference with their new XGT line of 40-volt tools? We test the new GPH01 40V Hammer Drill Driver to find out. This 1/2" hammer drill not only gets the 40-volt and larger brushless motor upgrade, but they also stuffed in 62 different digital clutch settings. Makita also gave it an anti-kickback feature to save your hands and wrists from the drill twisting under power. You can get the GPH01 in a combo with the GDT01 40-volt impact driver, 2x 2.5Ah 40-volt batteries, and the charger for $449. Makita includes a 3-year warranty with these new XGT 40V tools.

its way quieter, its way faster in the faster speed than an impact. the precision of the digital clutch really brings the drill back into relevancy. For delicate stuff I really love a hydraulic impact.

I have this and the XPH14 at hand right now, and I have to say I'm not impressed with this 40V. 1. The electronic clutch is a disgrace. There is significant lag and inconsistency in its activation, and it will often deliver full torque for about half a second to the fastener before shutting off. This is as good as not having a clutch at all. 2. It blows noticeably less air out the chassis than the 18v. 3. The battery seems to get warm a lot faster from the same load.

You forgot to demo the music on the charger! Thanks for the review Tim - I missed that it switched from 41 to 21 settings in gears 1 and 2 when I tested it out. 2.5aH battery @ 36V (nominal, 40V Max) and 5aH @ 18V are both 90 Wh so you get more out of the small 40V than you'd expect!

We did actually record the tune, but we just couldn't bring it to ourselves to include it in the video. lol. Correct, and with higher voltage you get a little more efficiency as well. I just don't know that any of it really pushes someone over the line to switch from 18v to 40v. There is a place for it, but it's tough to have 2 complete platforms.
@PhillyFixed
@PhillyFixed 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shoptoolreviews Agree - I think they're targeting contractors that want to ditch their corded or gas small equipment like large breaker hammers etc. in favor of the 80V stuff, but they're including tools like this so they can migrate entirely from 18V and not need to maintain both.

I just exchanged my hammer drill for a replacement because it was making a loud clanking/grinding noise when you let off the trigger. This is not the normal brake clutch sound you would expect, this is extremely loud and also vibrates the whole tool. What I find odd is that the replacement drill is doing the same exact thing - is this just normal behavior for this model?

Like the technology but most expensive on the market. For me I use Milwaukee and want to go into Makita as my second choice but some of it is redundant and in my view the need to buy batteries for 2 lines. The batteries are just extra costs. I think Makita and Milwaukee are neck in neck with regards to quality depending on the tool but the price on this one is just a bit high. Way higher than even Milwaukee which isn’t cheap.

I'd be interested to see how much torque it actually puts out in the lowest clutch setting. Generally speaking electronic drill clutches are garbage but this one seems like it might have some promise to it. Also be interested in what kind of charge times for those batteries.

Now, half a year later, i went for the new cheaper XGT drill driver with 21 manual clutch settings, much more accurate at low settings. Also, its smaller and lighter, easier to use for delicate work. I also got the big hammer driller tested in this video so i am covered for high power applications as well.

I use this drill 4 months it was already under repair because the 25 mm bosch drill for wood stopped and the engine kept working, makita replaced the gear box, now 3 weeks after receiving it from the repair it starts to happen again but only when it warms up I return it to the seller, impossible work like that.

I don't know man. 40volt battery means bigger batteries and less capacity compared to the 18volt stuff. Correct me if I'm wrong but this as a 40volt still doesn't have much more power then the 18volt stuff especially compared to milwaukee.
@banannaninja
@banannaninja 3 жыл бұрын
40v 4ah is equivalent to 18v 8ah. Same capacity, more efficient.
@Shoptoolreviews
@Shoptoolreviews 3 жыл бұрын
Higher voltage is more efficient. A 220/240V fan motor is more efficient (makes power easier) than the equivalent fan motor at 110/120V. Now, at the same time, the 40V vs 18/20V is at a much smaller scale, but the same principle resides. Yes, the 40V has the potential to deliver more power and capacity; however, that doesn't mean it's applicable in every scenario. If you can get your jobs done at a sufficient pace with 18V batteries, then I would worry about switching to a new platform. There's a lot of cool features on this new 40V drill, but it's not going to change your life. Thanks for watching.
@SweetStat
@SweetStat 3 жыл бұрын
Amp x volt = watts 4ah@40v is the same wattage as 8ah@20v With higher voltage you loose less power to heat etc which makes higher voltage more efficient TLDR, the big advantages of higher volt is more efficient so more usable capacity and being able to push tools harder (more wattage) without heating up the tool AND battery as much as with lower voltage .
