It didn't look better than the available ones on the market at World of Concrete. Slightly slower than the Metabo-hpt and heavier too. They obviously could have improved it since then which I am hoping it is as it looked inferior to a nailer released in 2016/2017 and is, frankly, embarrassing if it isn't.

Sounds like fanboying to me, I've heard rumors that the next gen Metabo HPT/Hikoki framing nailers are right around the corner too, and they made em lighter. The Metabo HPT roofing/siding nailer just hit amazon, 18v tool. A first gen tool from Makita, who has a pretty bad track record for nailers, will be a hard sell. But I'd be happy to be wrong.

I've had the japanese version of that impact for over a year and its great. No other impact from other brands compare with its suite of features, power, etc. Also, its not expensive, it was quite a bit less than the previous gen I purchased. Its more than the far lesser from other brands but not that bad, and i got it shipped from Japan too.

I have everything makita 18v, the grinder, the 36v mower and weedeater (changed the head for an echo speedfeed), the 18v hedge trimmer, 18v air pump (handy af), 18v soldering iron (knockoff but cool), 2 makita 18v fans (came in handy with the hurricane when no power) 2 18v makita lights, 18v 1/2in impact, 18v 1/4 impact, 18v brushless drill, 18v mini chainsaw, 18v sawzall, 36v blower (got it for a steal for 40 bucks on offerup, drove 50 miles to get it lol, and its amazing), 18v circular saw, 18v handheld duster blower / air pump, 18v jig saw, also got some new oem 6.0 batteries that are amazing, have some 5.0s and 4.0s too. one of my makita batteries is a 3.0 and still works from 2008.

Only the 4040F is tabless, the 50F and 80F have enough traditional cells to deliver the same amps or better without significantly degrading the cells. Also the 4050 used 18650 cells so no tabless there for a minute more (if ever, seeing as how they pulled the 4025F shortly after a soft paper launch). I wonder if they went with the 20 name because it's more of a sidegrade to the 19 than a full generational upgrade (by traditional line goes up standards). It could also explain the lack of an XGT version, they have another impact/drill combo cooking for release soon. That post also mentioned using aircraft tech cells dependent on regulatory hurdles. That could mean using the CATL condensed tech, which could mean double power density. So it's possible we'll see a third tier of battery later.

Would anybody be able to help me understand what this information means for someone like me, a potential first-time Makita buyer who is just looking for fastening and drilling for DIY home projects? I already feel like there's so many options that I can't decide what I need, and now there's more stuff coming in Q4, so maybe it's better to just wait to make my first purchase?

If you can wait, I'd wait to get the impact driver at least. That thing is sweet. What do you want to be able to do with your tools? There are a good number of tool categories you could buy now depending on what you want to get done. I do the general construction for renovations (studs, drywall, paint, trim).

LXT is a pretty complete lineup already, though. The new impact driver actually offers new functionality (settings, ring light, smaller head, ergonomics), but stuff like the 80v tools could never be on the 18v system. 4 batteries is ridiculous for anything except a lawn mower or other push & wheeled tools. They really could have made that ROS 18v compatible though, or an 18v version. The router and belt sander need to be 40v though. That router is closer to 3hp when it's got an 8ah battery on it, and I bet you can tell the difference with the belt sander, too. I've just accepted that there are some 40/80v tools I'll have to get. My 2x LXT tools are great for most jobs though, never felt like I was lacking for features or power.
