Phenomenal footage, amazing. Though very sad at losing the marlin, it’s just nature at its best/worst. I think Al was quite lucky not to get attacked himself, splashing around with his fins. That one photo of the mako holding the marlin across the belly, it makes you realise just how big that mako was

Its not really nature when the marlin doesnt have a running chance.

What an amazing experience! What an amazing shot! What amazing fish! All around, super jealous! Mako sharks are extremely capable predators but they also have the largest brain of any shark which means they are more capable of analyzing a situation and using their various senses to their advantage. How cool!

Fantastic video Al! Makos are very fast and very aggressive, and they're the sworn enemy of some marlin, and the broadbill swordfish. The Mako's main attack method is to bite the tail off of their prey, thereby depriving their prey of their "motor". By the looks of it, that's exactly what happened here. There's a great video put on KZbin last week of a Mako jumping onto the bow of a charter fishing boat near Whitianga here in New Zealand!! If the shark had jumped into the fishing deck instead it would have been bloody mayhem!! The Mako is also the All-Time World Champion of Boat Attacks!!

You know, that's not the first Mako attacking a hooked Marlin that I've heard of. Those fish are quite intelligent. Even though they don't have the brain development to understand complex concepts, they definitely do understand that stealing human catches is a good feeding opportunity. It also attacked the tail first, which it definitely thought out. Fossil evidence has pointed out that Megalodon attacked prey by biting bony areas, which is a different strategy from White Sharks that bite softer, fleshier areas. This Mako went straight for the tail to disable the Marlin before it went to eating it. It's a good thing you didn't go straight to the boat. A sudden movement toward the shark could've been interpreted it as an aggressive move toward its meal. But you're the pro, I'm sure you already know.

That was AWESOME Al ! I would have shit myself so hard that it would have launched me like a missile out of the ocean and onto the boat ! I know that down south you can jump in a cage and go shark watching but I haven’t heard of anything like that up here in NSW especially around Port Stephens - that place is a magnet for game fish and sharks - i have on many occasions watched small Great whites cruising along Stockton beach just out the back of the breakers usually not far away from a school of fish . I remember years ago fishing off a beach at port macquarie and a pod of dolphins turned up and started to surf the wavers - next thing i see a guy who was with us sprint past me heading for the water to swim with the dolphins and i”m screaming at this twit to get out of the water which fortunately he did , he asked me what the problem was then this nong says where there are dolphins there are no sharks ! I made him sit next to me and told him to keep his eye on the water where the dolphins had just been playing and sure enough this big dark shape appeared just cruising along following the pod . I don’t know if he has ever been back in the water after that ! If I can’t drink it I won’t swim in it ! I must admit it is getting a little expensive keeping my pool full of beer though 😁 Thanks for the Video Al !

Very cool story, thank you, I love Maco sharks, they are just the coolest shark in the ocean, and noone studies them to speak of, not like whites, or Tigers. We need to change that. They just found out they may have the strongest bite force on the planet. Think about that
@ShepherdsCreek2 жыл бұрын
Second strongest bite force. Salt water crocodiles still hold that crown but still super cool animals regardless. Makos have the largest brain of any shark and are also the fastest sharks clocked at 60mph (about 95 km/h) for top speed so same speed as a cheetah. I love Mako sharks as well and even named my dog Mako because of how cool they are :)

I saw a show on US TV where the actor put on an Australian accent and the closed captions said "[British accent]" . I just laughed. Americans can sound a bit like Canadians and Australians can sound like New Zealanders, but Brits sound nothing like Aussies.
