I was told a story where Bear used to eat breakfast and the waitress asked him what he wanted. Coach Bryant said, "I want my eggs burnt a litte on the side, toast burnt around the edges etc." The waitress said, "Now Coach we can't cook it like that". He said, "the hell you can't, you did it yesterday".

It’s hard to say that. He’s was phenomenal. But Alabama had a running back that won the heisman , that was 6’4, 250 lbs and ran a 4.4 forty. You would have to categorize that John Hannah changed the way offensive lineman went about football, and will always be a legend , but Alabama has produced players, that we lights out at their respective position

@@A-Aron5151 True, at the collegiate level there have been players who played better while dawning the crimson tide. However, at the NFL level the only Alabama alums who’s in the conversation with Hannah would be Derrick Thomas and Julio Jones.

@@edgarmellancamp6818 Derrick Thomas has he all time nfl sack record for a game. Just proves my point even further He’s in a category of his own Julio jones changed some things too.

Here's a "Bear" story that's never been shared. At the old Bama Drive-in coffee shop, I used to have coffee and donuts before my first class. I'd see Coach Bryant there sitting in a booth alone drinking coffee, reading the B'ham Post Herald. One time I walked over to him and said, "Hi, Coach, are we going to win Saturday?" He growled back, "Well, we'll show up. We might have to leave the stadium at halftime just to save the equipment." Two days later Bama annihilated NC State.

@greymoose1000 You might want to read a little about Coach McKay--he recognized Bryant as the greatest. McKay said about Bryant: "He wasn't just a coach, he was THE coach." The other greatest coaches agreed with McKay. Bob Devaney of Nebraska stated: "He was simply the best there ever was." Woody Hayes said of Bryant: "He literally coached himself to death. He was our greatest coach."

hees a funny story : A woman and her sister were at the mall and passed by a store that sold a variety of nuts. As they were looking at the display case, the boy behind the counter asked if they needed any help. The woman replied, "No, I'm just looking at your nuts." The sister started to laugh hysterically, the boy grinned, and she turned beet red and walked away."

Moose, it is only a fact for those who are unfamiliar with history. Bryant was never "saved" by John McKay, and neither was the Alabama football program. If you are referring to the 1970 USC victory over Alabama, it might interest you to know that Alabama already had an African American on the team. The game only served to prove that Alabama needed to recruit more African Americans. By the way, Alabama beat #5 ranked USC--at Los Angeles--the very next year.

Opheliarosesmom, There were some epic battles between Hanna and White but in an Inside Sports interview, Hannah confided that White was one of the few tackes he could not control. The battles I have of them on tape are about 50/50 but almost always, Hannah had assistance from the center. No mistake though, Hannah was the best!

UAT should dedicate their press box or even their stadium to the USC Trojans and Coach John McKay, the greatest college football coach in NCAA history. USC and Coach McKay saved the UAT football program and Bear Bryant's coaching career. This is just pure fact.

That is a pretty crazy comment. What actually happened is that the politics of the day leaked into college athletics. Bryant realized that the teams like Michigan State and USC were recruiting phenomenal players from the southeast and he needed a way to show politicians and administrators that they needed to recruit these players in order to competitive. He tried and failed to convince them. John McKay had three African American starters in the backfield. Bama was crushed. He proved his point. Now as far as John McKay vs Bryant they were both great coaches, Bryant has more National titles and take a look at what he did at both Texas A & M and Kentucky. No comparison my friend. Guy is the gold standard.
