Percival first requested for 100 tanks to fight a mobile war for the defense of the Malaya peninsula 4 years before the Japanese invaded. The War Office simply ignored his repeated requests. When the Japanese invaded with 200 tanks, Percival had no tank to fight them with. His Indian Divisons were poorly equipped and just not mobile enough to deal with the Japanese light armor. Percival was set up to fail by London and he duly failed.

@@jonbaxter2254 Here in Singapore, Feb 15th is known as Total Defence Day. Sirens ring at 6:20pm (the time of the British surrender) to remind us of the fall. There is also 2 years of compulsory military service for all local males right after high school. Though not mentioned in the video, the Japanese authorities extorted $50 million Straits dollars from Chinese communities throughout Southeast Asia in the months following the fall of Singapore. This they called an indemnity for opposing their invasion of China. In the end, only half the amount was raised, and the rest had to be borrowed from the Yokohama Specie Bank. After the war, in the 1960s, the Singapore government recovered the money. Part of it was used to build the Civilian War Memorial in the city centre while the rest was, IIRC, used to develop local industry with the aid of Japanese MNCs.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Kings and Generals, you have outdone yourselves!! I absolutely love the entire pacific series, and to have that to go back and watch chronologically is amazing!! That being said, the prior long video over the entirety of the Guadalcanal campaign was also absolutely brilliant as a stand-alone piece of work. I said with regards to that video when it came out, and I'll say it again here now on this one, these longer segments that cover an entire campaign or area of operations should be considered as material to be taught to current officers and NCO's. The level of detail, and that perfect combination of both the strategic and the tactical, the macro and micro, all in the same segment make your work on the Pacific more comprehensive and unique compared to most of the myriad other sources that I have come across in a film format, and I've seen a whole lot!! Thank you sincerely for your incredible work in all that you do, but from a long-time viewer, this series and all the related longer content is in my humble opinion your best work thus far!!

In 1937, a colonel Arthur Percival of the Malaya Command wrote a report predicting a Japanese invasion would be via Thailand, down the Malaya peninsula before attacking Singapore. Percival requested armored regiment of about 100 tanks to form a mobile defense on the difficult terrain of the Malaya peninsula. The decision to ignore requests from Malaya was made at the highest level of the British High Command in London.

@@tvgerbil1984 I doubt 100 tanks would have changed much, since it is not just about having them, but how they are used. The British showed they do not know how to use tanks, not in France, not in North Africa, and presumably not Malaya. 100 spitfires, tho, that be a different matter!

@@mystikmind2005 The War Office actually authorised tanks to be sent to the Far East as the situation in North Africa stablised after limited success of Operation Crusader in halting Rommel in the summer of 1941. Unfortunately for Malaya, Churchill then signed a pact with Stalin and promised tanks and fighters for the Soviets in July 1941. The tanks, mostly early marks of Valentine were re-diverted to the Soviet Union instead. The Valentines were reliable, well armored and had main guns more than adequate to deal with the Type 95 Ha-Go and Type 97 Te-Ke light tanks used by the Japanese in Malaya.

Excellent video, and a solid introduction to the campaign and its progress and outcome. I'm currently writing a book on British officers during the Second World War and couldn't help but notice the following was omitted or at least not covered to great length. 1. You've used the wrong portrait for Brigadier Paris. You have used the portrait of his father, who was the commanding officer of the Royal Naval Division during the First World War. 2. Lieutenant Colonel Charles Anderson took command of the 45th brigade after the death of Brigadier Herbert Cecil Duncan (KIA while leading an attempted breakout of the brigade on the 20th of January 1942). 3. The commanding officer of the 9th Indian Division, Major General Arthur Edward Barstow was killed whilst crossing a demolished railway bridge on the 28th of January 1942. 4. Among those senior officers killed in the aftermath of Singapore capitulation were Major General Merton Beckwith-Smith (of Diphtheria 11.11.1942 in Changi Prison), Brigadier Walter Lindley Fawcett (on staff of Indian III Corps) when his ship was bombed in the evacuation, Brigadier William Aird Smith (on staff of Indian III Corps) (same fate - different ship), and Brigadier Paris (died, 03.04.1942, while adrift after the SS Rooseboom sank ). The loss of such senior officers during the campaign is significant in highlighting the complete disarray that British Far East Command was in during the early stages of the conflict in this theatre. As one commenter has already highlighted, the mobile warfare employed during this campaign underlined huge gaps in British doctrine at this time and the preconceived notion that Japan was not able to match Britain in open conflict. This of course proved to be the undoing of Britain's empire in the Far East and would be a costly lesson in underestimating the Japanese as a power in the region.

The Malays literally fought until their last in Singapore and through Askar Wataniah Pahang during the occupation and some joined the MPAJA. Most Chinese joined the MPAJA and even funded the relief to help their families who fought against the Japanese in China, plus they suffered the most during the occupation and the inflation and food ration made everyone in Malaya suffered (I can say this definitely bcs some of my grandpa's older siblings died from malnutrition during the occupation and his family lived in Batu Pahat back then). Singapore is doom from the start at the first place once the Japanese arrived at Johor bcs literally, if you go to Tanjung Piai by the west, Johor Bahru and Pasir Gudang at the middle and Pengerang by the east, you can see Singapore from the shore clearly, which means the Northern part is clearly exposed, let alone at that causeway. The loss of Battleship Prince of Wales and Battlecruiser Repulse, Force Z, was actually a landmark moment in naval history. You will find naval leaders that weren't impressed by the air strikes that crippled, mauled Battleships in the earlier British and Japanese carrier strikes at Taranto (November 1940) and Pearl Harbor (three months prior to the Fall of Singapore), respectively. The Battleships were caught in port, immobile. The Americans were attacked even before a declaration of war was made, so they were not even aware war was already underway and were not ready and alert. But the destruction of Force Z was different. Prince of Wales was a modern Battleship, modern equipment, modern anti-aircraft. She had also had earlier combat operation experience as she was part of the pursuit of Bismarck earlier in the same year. Prince of Wales was so new that she was only commissioned in January 1941. When she sank she had not even been in service for 1 year. Anyways, Force Z was alert, out at sea, actively maneuvering to evade air attacks, firing their anti-aircraft guns. Yet Prince of Wales and Repulse were sunk by air power alone. This had never happened before in military and naval history. Naval warfare literally entered a new chapter with that event. Air power had finally been proven to be a great danger to warships, even something as powerful as a Battleship. As for Singapore itself, Percival was set up to fail. The British deemed Singapore be a fortress. It's a longtime jewel in the British Empire. It's strategically located in the region. But wartime demands had the British place its equipment elsewhere. 2nd rate equipment were sent to help defend one of the Empire's greatest holdings. The Japanese at this period of the Pacific War were also steamrolling everyone in air, land, and sea. Britain's Singapore and American held Philippines were attacked and would eventually fall to Japan. How MacArthur lost the Philippines also also another big deal in this period of the war. MacArthur had a large, modern air force, yet he lost it instantly in one of the greatest debacles in WWII. The Japanese ground forces in Malaya kept on the attack and maneuver relentlessly. Time was everything to keep the Allies on the back foot north of Singapore.

History has been quite unkind to General Percival for his conduct of the Malay campaign. Despite the fact that Percival had tried several times to get the UK government to alter it defense plans for Malaya and Singapore. Already back in 1937, Percival wrote a report that almost predicted the fall of Malaya and Singapore to a tee. He also discovered that the Malayan jungle was certainly not as impenetrable as it was thought to be. He requested more funds to strengthen the defensive works, but most of was spent on constructing machine bunkers on the southern shore of Singapore island and Johore. He had requested that tanks be sendt to Malaya, and they were due to arrive some time in 1941, but when Hitler launched operation Barbarossa in June, they were redirected to Stalin instead. So the war in Europe certainly was a major factor in the Japanese victory. And then you have political and logistical hurdles to deal with. The political and administrative establishment frequently obstructed the planning and building of defensive works on the grounds of private ownership. However, it should be pointed out that Percival was not a man suited for an emergency, nor conducting a fighting retreat. Especially against a battle hardened enemy such as the Japanese.

Sending tanks to help Stalin instead of defending Malaya would bite them in the future even till today, I dare say that Churchill is an arrogant idiot that makes Boris Johnson look like a genius. The fact that Soviet Union was empowered with British and eventually American aid, would empower Stalin and eventually that would spillover in the cold war and then Putin's Russia's war in Ukraine.. long story short.. if lend lease wasnt given the Soviet Union, Putin's Russia might be weaker today, what stupid churchill did not figure out is that AFTER defeating Soviet Union, Germany still has to eventually fight a better rested UK AND USA, when victory or war over a Soviet Union without lend lease would be costly either way. And yes history is unkind to Percival but too kind to Churchill

The name 'Percival' still haunts us to this day and played an important role in the later 'Malaysianisation' by the British colonial government in the region to begin relegating the defense duty to the local people (especially during Malayan Emergency). Notice the glaring lack of armor on the British side? The British planners had decided before the war that tanks were ill-suited to jungle warfare. The Japanese proved them wrong by not only using armor to spearhead their offensives but also coming up with other tactical innovations like bicycle troops to execute their own version of the Blitzkrieg.

The disaster at Singapore was due to several factors, not least was the fact that though the Japanese army was relatively small, it was well equipped with tanks and artillery. The Japanese also had total air superiority with modern aircraft, based in nearby countries. General Percival was a poor choice as Commander, he had been a desk jockey having only seen limited combat in WW1. His poor leadership alienated his Officers and his troops lost confidence. But had he held our just a few weeks more reinforcements were on their way.
@sijul6483
@sijul6483 Жыл бұрын
It's not entirely Percival's fault. He requested airplanes to be sent to Singapore because he suspected a Japanese assault from the rear, but Winston Churchill believed those planes were better off sent to the USSR. *According to another commenter, Percival requested 400 tanks 4 years before the Japanese invasion but he was ignored by the war office. *(See HallMicheals comment's replies) It also would not have changed much if any other man was in charge, the Japanese had overwhelming power and mastered the art of surprise attacks (see: Russo-Japanese War and Japan's entry into WW1).

@@sijul6483 Were Percival failed was his dithering and the fact that he did not inspire confidence. He had never commanded troops in battle which was probably why he was in Singapore, that and the "old boy" connections. Australian General Gordon Bennet was actually senior to Percival and had commanded troops for many years. He would have been better qualified. In 1938 the British had no modern tanks, the 1st Armoured Division with the BEF in France 1940 was 50% under strength. What tanks that were available were sent to Egypt to guard the Suez Cannal. Aircraft were sent to Malays but no anti-aircraft guns to defend the airfields. The Japanese were at the end of their resources when Percival surrendered. While Percival was getting fresh troops and supplies. Some 20,000 troops marched off their troop ships into captivity. He was a disgrace.

Gordon Bennett was not senior to Percival but Bennett had the rights to bypass Percival to confer with the Australian government over military decisions concerning Australian troops in Malaya. At the fall of Singapore, Bennett escaped on his own without informing Percival or his own government. He left behind over 15,000 Australian troops and passed command to Brigader Cecil Callaghan who was ill with Malaria and too junior to command an Australian division.

@@tvgerbil1984 Gordon Bennet was promoted to Major General in 1930, Percival not till 1940. Percival was made Acting Lt General only when he took over Malaya command. Bennetts escape from Singapore was originally deemed praiseworthy and supported by the troops. The "old Boy" clique only became active after Bennett wrote a book in 1944 about the fall of Singapore blaming Percival. The kangaroo Court began in 1945. He was cleared 1948 under Australian Military Law.

@@billballbuster7186 By 1943, the truth behind Bennett's heroic escape from Singapore was already known by the Australian military and his superior General Thomas Blamey told him that he would not be given another active command and transferred him to the Reserve of Officers in May 1944. Cecil Callaghan was the one of the few who knew the truth behind Benett's escape. Callaghan endured all the harsh treatments by the Japanese, lost half of his body weight and still tried to maintain morale and discipline of his men during captivity. He said he was ashamed of Bennett in abandoning his men and he challenged the account of events in Benett's book.

@@yellowpete79 Since you wrote your comment, I looked into the subject. It seems that while the Australians as a whole put up a good fight, according to Major Cecil Callaghan, the commander of Australian forces in Singapore (put in charge by Australian General Gordon Bennett who had fled), around a third of Australians deserted in the later stages of the battle for Singapore in February, and discipline completely broke down over the Australian troops. So, I think it's a bit unfair to blame only the Brits for that.

In war, it's impossible to be strong everywhere. The British could survive the loss of Singapore but could not survive the loss of the Suez Canal. The British naval strength in the Asia/India theatre was in a constant state of flux- ships were constantly being transferred to/from the Mediterranean. There simply wasn't the naval assets to sustain the effort required in the Indian ocean and even the USN, with its massive logistical and shipbuilding capacity did not eliminate the threat of the IJN until late in 1944. The British Empire would ultimately not survive the war- this was the death blow and despite the fact that the war cost the Empire many hundreds of thousands dead and millions of Indians by famine I believe that this was necessary. The European Empires had to be dismantled so we could move forward to a more equitable and freer world community.
