The book of bros! Malazan is full of surprises, not least of which is how different readers react to different things. Like you, I feel for Rhulad, and I enjoy the Crimson Guard, who show up a lot more in the Esslemont books. Also, you’re allowed to “skim” the epigraphs, but you’ll have to read the entire book all over again if you “skip” even one because it doesn’t count until you read every single word. 😁

Hi Mike, I am really pleased that this one was firmly in the win column for you. I find it really interesting that we all have different aspects, characters, and plot arcs that resonate with us, or that we have different reasons for why we like/dislike something. A strength of the series for me is the sheer variety of storytelling across the series. None of the books feel like X part 2, they each feel like their own story. (The disadvantage is that some will resonate more strongly than others). It is always great to hear your point of view. I look forward to these videos and even when we have divergent opinions they are always interesting and worth watching. Thank you for the great video and I look forward to the next one.

Trull asked Seren to marry him, was what that moment was :) "And he was holding the sheathed sword out to her. At the threshold of her home." This was explained early on in the book, Fear offered Mayen his sword, and she buried it in front of her door (at the threshold). This is their betrothal. And while Seren isn't Tiste Edur, she knows damn well how that custom goes. But of course, Trull and Seren both were too chicken to say it out loud and the moment passed.
@MaxCadyS3 жыл бұрын
I think there’s an earlier moment where Seren has been given a grace period to get out of Trull’s village before Rhulad and co invade her home city. I think Seren and Trull have a moment then.

Great talk Mike. No spoilers for the next two books as I am currently chugging through Reaper's Gale , just wanted to comment on a few scenes. The scene with the Sengar brothers before the battle and between Trull and Seren deeply affected me as well. As far as interpreting the scene with Trull and Seren goes, it might help you to remember the betrothal ceremony between Mayen and Fear and whether there were any parallels between them. Rhulad is a brilliant character - someone I feel deep pity and compassion for despite the horrific things he does - you are going to enjoy reading him in future books. The Tiste Edur, represent cultural denial. As a community they are unable to accept the fact that their leader was a betrayer, someone who committed a horrific crime and that denial, that need to justify their atrocities leads them into direct conflict with the Letherii. On the flipside the Letherii have managed to subjugate multiple tribal communities purely put of a sense of superiority, they have justified genocide time and time again. At the end of the book you get the feeling that while the Tiste Edur and the Letherii are on opposite sides of the confilict, neither of them are innocent or in the "right". Erikson manages to demonstrate this complexity brilliantly in this book and it will always be my favourite in this series, atleast so far. . Another point I would like to make is that Feather Witch and Udinaas both work as opposing ideas of what slavery can do to a human being - how it dehumanises. Feather witch is repeatedly beaten and possibly raped by Mayen - over the course of the book, she has multiple opportunities to do the right thing and show mercy and compassion whether towards Udinaas or someone else - but she doesn't do it. Udinaas struggles - he is an indebted as well as a Edur Slave, an outcast from both warring societies. He finds it hard to forgive and his internal monologue is usually full of hate and anger and cynicism - but look at his actions, he chooses, again and again and again to be compassionate. And this struggle between being compassionate and sliding towards indifference defines Udinaas's character. He is again one of my favourites in terms of just how complex he is. Sorry for the long post - I hope you enjoy the rest of the books. Will catch up again when you are done with the Bonehunters.

Super happy to see you had so much fun with this book and that it wasn't over-hyped for you by all us enthusiasts. I was smiling and nodding along with the video (and mimicking your f-bombs with regards to Feather Bitch), because yaaaaaay, you liked the same plot threads and characters that I did. Also, virtual hugs and cookies for a fellow Rhulad lover. Man... that guy. He's a jackass and you want to smack him, but it also hurts to see him in agony or making terrible mistakes or being so terribly alone. His relationship with Udinaas is just incredibly written (the Wormtongue vibes you're getting from Udinaas... nope! read on and see, but nope) and that scene with the Sengar brothers having a laugh and a drink. I swear I'm smiling through my tears each time I read it. Bug is wonderful, it's such an amazing thing to see a god so attached to a mortal that he'll do anything for them. And when he loses his temper... I swear I wasn't even breathing the first time I read those scenes. Plus, when he lets Tehol keep his memories about who his manservant is... ❤ Great stuff, the battles were pure magic mayhem and carnage. Erikson did an awesome job showing a different way for people to use the powers in his universe. W/o being too spoilery... Warrens magic vs Holds magic is pretty awesome to read about. Anyways... I'm thrilled to see the Malazan love going strong and October can't come soon enough because it'll be time for Bonehunters and that's a freaking good book.

About weird resources to go to war over: In the 19th century, guano (bat and sea bird excrement, as made famous by that celebrated documentary "Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls") became prized as a vital source of saltpeter for gunpowder as well as an agricultural fertilizer. This lead to a war ("The War of the Pacific"/"The Saltpeter War") between Chile and an alliance of Peru and Bolivia from 1879 to 1884 (which to this day Bolivia is angry over, as it lost its excess to the Pacific over it) and the export of Guano from Peru might have been the source for the Potato Blight that caused the Great Potato Famine in Ireland. To this very day "The Guano Islands Act" of 1856 enables citizens of the United States to take possession, in the name of the United States, of unclaimed islands containing guano deposits located anywhere, as long as they are not occupied and not within the jurisdiction of another government. It also empowers the President of the United States to use military force to protect and enforce US law over the Islands. So the US has a literal "B@tsh/t law" to protect their supply of b@tsh/t, that allow the US President to go to war over b@tsh/t...

Also as for Udinaas gaining the trust of Rhulad, I think it comes to that Udinaas seems to be the only person who actually seems to feel compassion for Rhulad's situation of dying over and over again. Even Trull who is very worried about the situation, really seems to care that Rhulad brutally dying over and over might be bad for others. He doesn't seem that worried for Rhulad's sake, only for how Rhulad might abuse power This I think it why the plot stuck with me so much, because it feels believable that the compassion of 1 slave held together an empire, and when Udinaas gets mind controlled we see things fall apart.

Not to beat a dead horse (mule?) there are a lot of hints about Bugg but it is a very small number who picked up on it. So tell us how you really feel about Featherwitch? This book must have hit a nerve with the f bomb count. The amount of hatred for a character Erickson can instill in the reader can make you feel uncomfortable at times and often a good sign. And in conclusion, there are a lot of scenes in the middle of the books that would be the ending of many others. This was set early on with the opening of GotM. But even so, the endings of all of them are incredible. Does it seem like half way through?

@@kah-thurak I wasn't speaking to the publishers timeline, but to the narrative timeline. Internal inconsistencies are something you kind of have to shrug off.

@@Paul_van_Doleweerd Yes, but I think that the reason for the faulty timeline in the narrative is exactly the same as the one for the pace of publication... it is just Erikson's process not to take notes or make charts etc. to the degree that other authors might. So he is faster but he also has some incosistencies between the books.

@@kah-thurak Travel through warrens doesn't help much either. And I can't say as I expect every I dotted and T crossed in a 3 and a half million word epic. If there are inconsistencies, I put them in the to be expected file, so far none have broken the story so I'm good with it.

I skipped this book because I didn't recognize any characters. Tiste are not interesting to me. At all. I get torched in forums because I didn't dive into this book which is a prequel and a comedy. Yay.
