Never trust anyone elses work!! The Dynamo looks relatively new eh!!☺

Correct mate. Years ago I had a problem with a Mk2 Cortina. Trusted a new part, a suppressor I'd fitted in the HT lead from the coil to the dizzy....took an age to find it was at fault. Yes Dynamo is relatively new, discovered it's a car one, as the original is not open on the end. But to fit it, find it works, then doesn't is a tad depressing....I'll get there.

I taught all of my apprentices to check a generator (dynamo) like a motor, best and easiest test I found over the years. Maybe a bit of loctite might help the oil can.
@MalcOfLincoln8 жыл бұрын
Loctite was suggested, but I've also got a flexible spout. It's ok, just annoying when you pay good money and get crap. Why I hate buying anything now. As you say, much the easiest way to test a dynamo. First test I did while still on the tractor was to put a live to the field from the battery. Only showed a fluctuating 10v. Fixed that, next is to look at the regulator. Never done an ally covered one, but simply held on by clips at the bottom. Pretty cheap to buy so if I can find one at the show tomorrow I'll just swap it.....can't be anything else. Oh yes it can, dodgy wiring lol.

Definitely.....especially as it's only 2 weeks since I thought about getting a tractor. Had a few bits of luck, chance meeting in town with my mate with the truck, them listing in badly on ebay, general condition being good etc.

Interesting about the alternator . I often find the source of my problems to the battery from the alternator is the regulator . I never seem to find them doing one of three things ,nothing at all ,wide open overcharging or working correct . In the end ,,it's just an electric motor that either gives voltage or uses external power to generate voltage 👍 Damn quality these days ,,they can't even properly thread an oil can ! Lol. I think I'd prefer a compression coupling anyway over trying to thread such thin walled metal.

Been to Heckington show today. Video of CAs to come. Talking to some tractor chaps, they've 4 Nuffields at home, and he said when the dynamo has been off it's got to be repolarised.....ok years ago now but I've had loads of dynamos off cars and they've always worked without before. Only time I had to do it was when I changed polarity. Could be to do with this type of regulator? We'll see.

Cheers Rick - bit to do before town. But get lights and go to cruisein on a dry warm night eh! Be a giggle. Top Mcdonalds though....158 Kennel Lane Greetwell Road. Might need escort lol.

Intermittent faults are irritating :/ Looked like there was a cast loop on the clutch pedal and a place for a spring on the horizontal part of the chassis or engine. I wonder if that's where the spring should have gone? Seems odd that it would have a steel bracket on a bolt when there are suitable cast parts in the exact right spot. Perhaps the original spring broke, and someone bodged the bracket on there as a quick fix?
@MalcOfLincoln8 жыл бұрын
Extremely irritating aren't they. Anyway I've just had a chat on the phone with someone who's told me about the regulator....you can take the ally case off by undoing the metal clips underneath. Not had that off yet. Plus a new one isn't too expensive. Never had to work on one with an ally case before. I left the spring off because it was stretched too tight. Now I've straightened the bracket and moved to have slight tension at rest, that job's sorted. As the shaft has moved, it might be it's resting on the release bearing so there might? be some adjustment inside, accessed through the inspection plates. Either way it won't be a problem as it will only have very little use.

+MalcOfLincoln She's in good hands; You'll have it sorted out in no time. My old Kubota had similar issues. I kept mending old repairs and eventually just redid all the electrical parts. Mine has a GM 10SI alternator now that is self exciting and no more intermittent issues or dead batteries when I need it to run. All those connections corrode and loosen up, add the occasional instead of regular use (like a car would have) and stuff will quit working seemingly randomly. Quite irritating indeed :) Have fun at the show!

Need any advice malc, have a good friend in his 70s who has worked on tractors since he was a kid. he collects tractors for showing.. has 11 in his garage :)

Thanks, that's great. Really just need info on stuff I've never done. For instance didn't know they made ally topped regulators. Found out how to do them tonight. All I've done have been the car ones with the spring holding the top on. One thing I do need to know, is there any inside adjustment on the clutch through the inspection plates on the sides?
@phayzic40398 жыл бұрын
Yes in the answer, if you can see an adjustment bolt from the inspection plate then it can be adjusted if not its likely a self adjusting one.

Heres a link to my friends sons website they both pretty much work on tractors of all varieties, any questions should be addressed there if your really stuck. facebook.com/j.whitemanagricontractorsworkshop/?fref=ts

One thing for certain - people should never be worried about buying anything from you, especially cars or the odd tractor, as you can be sure that you will have fiddled and fixed, stripped down and repaired and as YOU say, "bodged" but YOUR bodge would be far superior to a repair that most people could do!

Thanks Mike. Hardly sold any of my road cars....most were just 're-scrapped' lol. Either dumped in the local chalk pit, or given away. Everyone has been happy with the 3 racing cars I've sold, F2 Stock Car in 1979 and the Mazda and Montego in 1979. Boats however are a different story. Didn't make any money because of license and mooring fees. But in total sold 5. 1st the 18ft Norman, bought for £1500 and sold for £2750, however I did fit a new engine so lost. BUT I had 18 months boating. Then the 2 'abandoned ones at Bardney. First bought for £350 and sold for £800. Next bought for £250 and sold for £2300. All buyers happy and recouped my losses. Next Wud-E-Nuff bought for £1500, did 5 years boating and sold for £2000. Again I lost as I'd spent a lot on her, but 5 years boating for about £1500 isn't too bad. Then the last one, cost £0.00 and sold 5 years later for £1000. Yes that is correct it cost me nothing. Given to me by one friend, helped to sort out by another. Engine cost me £20 which I sorted the overheating out on, also got 2 tyres which a banger friend bought for £20. Full story on my website if you haven't read it.

I'm not a Luddite (or at least I hope not), but isn't it good to have something one can understand and actually work on; as opposed to today's connect it up to an analyser, then take it out and replace equipment. Hard luck with the oil can - damned irritating.

You're absolutely right. My only problem now is age has caught up. Might have mentioned, but repairing it last year I overdid it, and haven't recovered. Ok I could still do it if I had my own facilities, and worked at my, now very slow pace. But, as you can imagine it's very frustrating. However, as soon as it warms up again I'll get to her, charge battery and start etc. My only real job this year is to get the injectors serviced. All fluids, and remaining filters changed last year, and a full tank of diesel. Fingers crossed for no more major problems. Just some days now I'm a bit ill and can't do much. So just hope I'm ok, and have enough energy for show days.

Malc, I'm so sorry to hear that you're having health problems. I do hope that the summer weather, when it comes, is good for you and that you start to feel better. Getting old is tough, I'm starting to feel lonely - this year so far I've lost my mother, my best friend and two other close friends, each of them being friends for 40 or 50-odd years. At the age of 68, I can feel my capability diminishing. Oh, well.... Take care!
@MalcOfLincoln6 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you're having a bad year. I've had my share in the past, however I've also had good ones of course. Had to stop work when I was 43 due to lower back wearing out, then left on my own to manage on very little. However, manage I did, not only that I've done 10 years boating, a bit of banger racing in the late 90s, AND field bangers only a few years ago. And now of course have the Nuffield. All a minor miracle really eh! and grateful for it all. With no change of lifestyle I didn't think it would make any difference becoming an OAP, however I've found out, as you have it's why we retire at 65. Bodies start to have problems....but there's no cure for old age, so we just have to get on with it, but at a slower pace. Through my hobbies I've many friends, both real and online, who help enormously. If you're feeling lonely, how about going out to shows etc. Car shows, country shows, even dog shows. Nearly all the people you meet are friendly, and I'm sure you'll soon make some new ones.
