This remains one of the best pieces for this chamber ensemble ever composed. GREAT use of the instruments. Fun to hear again. The tubist was the most consistent performer throughout. BRAVO, Adam!

AGREED with your comment about the Tubist. He struck me as being the BEST... most consistent performer of the 5 (even though I am a trumpet player who has practiced and performed this piece). The tuba does a masterful job throughout. BRAVO !!

Good job guys. :) I have played this piece before in a brass quintet in college, but we didn't play this piece with this much energy and unity/attention to dynamic shifts... This piece has many, MANY different qualities. I heard so many subtle colors here, so many subtle shifts in mood and thought-and so much of that has to do with attention to dynamics and (in the 1st and 3rd movements) keeping the energy of the tempo and meter going. This is, I think what Malcolm Arnold was after, music that shifted constantly from the heroic/exciting, to a more foreboding/mysterious element, to the contemplative, austere/dark or rather sublime moments-in the 2nd movement. LOVE those dynamics and that blend. The 3rd movement being the "pulling out all the stops" movement/end with a "big finish", etc. But, overall, I am still most impressed, from a composition standpoint, with Arnold's immediate transitions between brighter and darker/more mysterious sections. As good as Grainger, with twice the energy. Again, very good job. :)

somewhat, I hear some "guide-tones" that remind me of "fly me to the moon" at 1:04... so jazzy and beautiful, love that brass tone, congrats!

Just a balance and ensemble tip; get the trumpets to face in not out. Better for sound quality and eye contact. Also gives extra confidence to the group and in this quintet you need it! Otherwise bravo, well played!

who the hell are you to say that i think the sound quality is fine, and eye contact isn't exactly needed in an ensemble piece when you're looking at difficult music as you play it

While the quality of this recording is good, here is another performance that is actually better... kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6q7gqmPbstsqrc. Likewise, here is another that is also better: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kH3Eeqt-hceaoNE. I think the Univ of Texas Ensemble needed to practice together more because there are a LOT of ragged ends throughout. The stellar part of the performance is the Tubist (impeccable).

Good, but the 1st movement is a tad slow.........

Arnold wrote this at 138. Definitely not too slow, even a tad over. Thought the tempo was ideal personally.
